The Doctor Who Target novel you never asked for but secretly really wanted.
Some background: New Earth being the disreputable story that it is (unfairly, in my opinion!), I figured there was *no way* they were ever gonna release an official Doctor Who novelization of it, so I figured I may as well write my own!
As part of this ongoing pet project of mine, the unofficial manuscript is now being released as a series of audiobook-style recordings - voiced by me, with specially commissioned chapter artwork from different artists and music used with kind permission by The Celestial Mechanic.
Available wherever you can get your podcasts! Editing it all together is a bitch and the release schedule varies wildly, but I'm having so much fun doing it! 😊
THE STORY SO FAR... (below the jump)
Prologue
Far below the surface of a brave new world, two feline nurses consult on the matter of a conscious "patient"...
1. New New Doctor
The brand-new Doctor and Rose head off for new adventures together, further than they've ever gone before...
2. The Hospital
Inside a posh hospital of the far-future run by the cat-like Sisters of Plenitude, the Doctor and Rose are summoned to Ward 26, but quickly find themselves taking very different directions...
3. The Visitor of Ward 26
Up in Ward 26, the Doctor meets his mysterious summoner, who turns out to be an old familiar face...
4. The Last Human
Down in the underbelly of the hospital, Rose is lured into a trap by another very familiar face, who has survived her apparent demise on Platform One and swears revenge...
5. The Face of Boe
Young Novice Hame tells the Doctor of the stories surrounding the ancient Face of Boe, who has one last great secret he will impart upon his death...
6. Body-Snatched
Lonely gods and bouncy castles, oh my! Lady Cassandra is living it up inside Rose's body, while upstairs, the Doctor awaits...
7. A Lady's Vendetta
The Doctor's suspicions of the Sisterhood increase when a terminally ill patient, the Duke of Manhattan, is miraculously cured. Meanwhile, Cassandra-Rose plots and prepares herself for some good old-fashioned seduction...
8. Miss Tyler, I Presume?
"Rose" finally joins the Doctor in his investigation of Ward 26, but maladies and miracle-medicines aren't the only things that are amiss...
9. Intensive Care
Following on from their unexpected canoodling session, "Rose" gives the Doctor a crash-course in mainframe computer terminal hacking, and hey presto! The hospital's dark, gruesome secret is revealed...
10. The Echo of Life
A debate with a cat: do the ends justify the means? The Doctor in full Oncoming Storm mode against nice Novice Hame - at least until "Rose" reveals herself at last... Oh, wake up and smell the perfume, who else did you think it was going to be?
11. Plan B
Countdown to zero! A very 24-inspired chapter, with the Doctor in dire straits and Cassandra/Rose triumphant as the cat-nurses come calling: it's time for blackma- ahem, negotiations!

The hair is very much the standout of the whole episode with the small amount of time Rose is even in it. One if not the best hairstyle on Rose by far.
Its quite a formal outfit as well, especially with those boots of hers and blue still makes its case for favourite colour.
#2 picture seems to have Rose pretty much melt into the background; her and the TARDIS are the same colour scheme.
Because she's not in the episode very much, it seems like it's a bit of a recycled mix of old clothes Rose has worn before; the black trousers and boots are quite reminiscent of the ones she had in New Earth, and the color of the hoodie she's got on underneath her black jacket is almost identical to the blue track-jacket she was wearing in that episode!
Maybe it's cos Love and Monsters is one of the only episodes of S2 that I feel truly recaptures the grit of S1, or it's just the pissed-off performance Billie's giving in that scene ("You upset my mum!"), but the hairstyle - all pulled back from Rose's face and shoulders - and the way she strides out of the TARDIS like she's gonna beat the crap out of Elton, with her casually-unzipped hoodie clashing with the dark formal outerwear - is almost like Rose is deliberately going back to her S1 roots. Like, just this once, she's stepping into the role of the "chav" Lady Cassandra once accused her of being. Beneath all those "airs and graces", as Jackie once said, is that gutsy streetwise South London gal still steaming to get out. Screw the great big absorbing alien beast; you mess with Rose's mum? She's gonna track you down and fuck your shit up. You can take the girl out of the council estate, but you can't take the council estate out of the girl! 😆
(All that being said, I'm kind of a sucker for her earlier denim jacket and plaid shirt outfit during the Scooby-Doo chase scene! 😄)
Love and Monsters and Hoop Earrings That Aren't Going Anywhere, Especially If You Upset The Owner's Mum.
Another action-girl look again (especially at the end), while still keeping the casualness of Rose in there (jeans, those undefeated hoop earrings!).
The way she wears her jacket with the flaps and collar open kinda reminds of how she wore her blue jacket in New Earth a little bit, and I like how its fantastic raspberry color makes Rose stand out in amongst all that (hellish? demonic?) red lighting on the Sanctuary Base and the muted, earthy tones the rest of the crew is wearing. (plus, all those pockets and zips!)
I think her makeup is definitely more pronounced this episode, particularly the mascara, and her hair is well-groomed as well, reflecting the confident adventurer Rose has become. (also, another appearance from her new Samsung Superphone from the Cybermen 2-parter... which Rose chucks to the ground after she hears the voice of the Beast! Poor phone... 😂)

Such a great outfit - it's so fifties and so feminine and so Rose, who we usually think of as being a bit of a tomboy! I love how there's this great FLARE of pink this time around; from the pink high-heeled shoes to the pink dress to her pink hairband to her pink sunglasses and even to her matching pink moped helmet! Based on that full-length camera move that pans all the way up from her shoes to her face when Billie first exits the TARDIS, you can tell the production team were proud of that costume: she looks like a MOVIE STAR. 🤩
New earrings!!! (The hoops are taking a vacation; saying goodbye to Mickey was too much for them😭). I like the other "Rose-touches", too: like the way she wears her bomber-jacket with the zip slightly down and the sleeves rolled up to the elbows (blue and pink complement her so well), and that little bit of white netting poking out from the bottom of her dress. There's a slightly cool, funky edge to it.
It's such a cute outfit, that it only makes it all the more obscene when the Wire steals her face and we see the detectives walk a faceless Rose into the police station, still in her pink dress, with that line about how she was just left out "in the street" like trash, wandering aimlessly through the night. Brrrrrr... 😱 She and the Doctor really earn that great big hug at the end!

“So, what have you been up to, Rose?” Mickey asks.
“Same old life, really.”
“Still missing that Doctor of yours?” Martha teases.
“Doctor? What Doctor?” Mickey looks between them.
“It’s nothing!” Rose says, eager to change the subject before Mickey gets jealous. “I found him during a storm.”
“And he mysteriously disappeared the next morning.” Martha happily stokes the flames.
“The next morning? What was he doing with you that night, huh?” Mickey sniffs.
“I’m not bloody easy, you sod—no offense, Jack—and he was a—“
“—Real catch.” Martha cuts in, ignoring Rose’s shocked glare, “Proper fit, gentlemanly too. It’s like the kind of thing you hear in a fairytale, really, with her saving him from the water like that.”

Doctor Who | Rise of the Cyberman & The Age of Steel
I really love this jacket on her, very much screams a more mature approach from Rose. She works the colour really well. Pink/Red & Blue are racing for the favourite colour.
Her hairstyle is very sweet here as well.
I like the peak of yellow/white from her top.
+ bonus
I love all the undercover outfits she wears and the boots here are STUNNING!!!
Yeah, bright red looks good on her! I think the production team were initially worried at the time that Billie looked too bulky in it before they quickly changed their minds - and frankly, given this story was filmed in freezing-cold January weather and is meant to take place in February, it's totally understandable that Rose would go for comfort & warmth first...
...especially since she spends the following episode-and-a-half in that tiny short-sleeved pinafore dress! (Apparently the outdoor night-shoots were so cold, Billie nearly got lockjaw!) Doesn't seem fair that Mickey managed to get the Doctor's suit back at the end of The Age of Steel but Rose has to leave her own clothes behind in the parallel world (little bit of extreme-deep-cut foreshadowing for the finale? 🤔)
I love the waitress-uniform look, though - the white collar and sleeve-cuffs really stand out amid all the black, especially in the episode production stills, and she pairs it really well with the tights and boots, à la Tooth and Claw. I especially love the detail of Rose keeping her (new!) Superphone just in the front pocket of her serving-apron; it's lucky it didn't fall out! 😂
Also: the hoop-earrings have followed her all the way into another dimension! Now that's dedication.
Also also! I like that blue hoodie-top Rose has got on when she and the Doctor go to visit Jackie back in our universe; like a lot of the outfits she wears in S2 it's softer, more feminine and a bit more vulnerable, which makes sense since Rose has been through a lot emotionally (rejected by parallel-Pete, lost parallel-Jackie, said goodbye to Mickey...). Plus, that cluster of decorative buttons on the shoulder is a neat call-back to her white top in The Christmas Invasion, IMHO.
Blue really does seem to be winning in this battle of wills between blue and pink.
Love her hair in this episode; the curls are just so sweet !
The hooped earrings continue their travels; they should be getting paid at this point. The casualness continuing as well as the practicality of the outfit.
It's very much action-girl and girl-next-door, isn't it? (she rocks that 51st century fire-extinguisher!) I think the idea is to contrast Rose's look with Madame de Pompadour's rich aristocratic 18th-century dress, but the tight Wichita Falls T-shirt & jeans combo still makes for a very sexy and straightforward style for her, I feel.
It's quite funny how this is meant to be Mickey's first trip in the TARDIS but they had time to stop at a hairdressers so Rose could get her hair permed 😆
The hoop-earrings reign supreme. Also, I think she's gone for boots again??
