The only reason that Sideswipe even made planet fall on Earth was due to pursuing him.

It did not go well, with him with him not having any care about humans blocking his way:

It got to the point where Optimus Prime was prepared to…deal with Sideswipe.

Prepared worryingly fast to kill one of his one troops with no attempt to reason with him.

Which actually directly aggravated Ironhide. 

But even then OP was only willing to grant him one hour to try a different approach:

This is especially harsh considering Ironhide canonically reared up Sideswipe, being fully responsible for training him. 

Much like Optimus Prime reared up Bumblebee. He’s like his grandad:

It doesn’t initially go well, Ironhide’s attempts to talk him down. Sideswipe continues the pursuit, ignoring Gramps. 

That hour OP gives them then runs out:

Ironhide, the heavier armoured and less damaged of the two, is forced to take direct missile hits to save his protege’s life.

Demolisher also gets away unfortunately, his next appearance leads directly into ROTF.

But fortunately the attack is then called off.

In terms of Ironhide and Sideswipe, Ironhide takes Sideswipe right back under his tutelage after this, trying to deal with his reckless nature and aggression issues, among other things:
