I would make the same choice again.” You will never sleep peacefully again, is all.

Well, we have at least one song, “I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz, in which a human flirts with another human by saying, “Come on over closer, dear/and I’mma nibble your ear”. So…chewing on someone to show you’re attracted to them isn’t just for animals, I guess. Some humans do it, too.

So…I actually do know the song. It’s called “Strange Fruit”, and it’s about lynchings. Our English teacher played it for us because we were learning about how Black people’s language arts have been used to talk about the racism they faced (and how it’s still a thing now, and still being written about now).

Haven’t seen “Sinners” yet. May have to check it out. Just felt like, since I have a side blog about songs, and one of the reasons it exists is for analysis of songs, I’d reblog this over here and share what I know.

It’s definitely not a “sexy” song. Anyone with a bit of care for others would be able to say that it’s not. And now, let’s let Billie Holliday take the floor.

So, to analyze: she’s very obviously singing about lynchings. The dead bodies of Black people hanging from trees are described in detail here. It’s not about actual fruit. It’s not anything that anyone should find “sexy”. It’s a serious, somber, and scary song - and with good reason! Killing another human being just because they’re Black is something nobody should have ever done, and it’s something that, unfortunately, still sometimes happens. And it shouldn’t happen! But back in the day, it was a very regular occurrence for Black Americans to be murdered by racists for spectacle. So, yeah, “Strange Fruit” is a good song, but it’s not a happy song, it’s not a “sExY” song, it’s a song filled with pain and fear and sadness. It’s about lynchings.
