i love to write hidden(?) ailments with characters who don't know, or don't want to admit, what's wrong with them/how serious it is. but it's also fun when the character knows Exactly what's wrong with them + how serious it is, but doesn't think it's bad enough to need treatment, doesn't think they specifically deserve treatment, doesn't trust the people around them to help, just assumes nothing can be done, etc.
A character is injured such that it takes them far longer than expected to travel somewhere, or they are injured en route, so that they are very late and the person they were supposed to meet is highly annoyed when they do arrive, apologising profusely for being late but not explaining why they were- until their injury becomes obvious and the angry character experiences an immediate pivot of emotions.
visible signs of illness or injury 🤝 characters who hate calling attention to themselves
grumpy team leader showing up on monday morning with their arm in a sling, coat draped awkwardly over their shoulders
young, bold up-and-coming captain desperately trying to hide a limp to avoid being benched
visible bruises hidden under a sweater that keeps riding up, or poorly covered with makeup, dodging questions as their friends get more and more concerned
medic counting on their team not paying too much attention to the slowly spreading stain underneath their field jacket and the way that their hands are shaking
reliable, steady intelligence source doesn’t get sick, and the way their voice is cracking over the radio is just a bad signal
a meeting that they have to lead in five minutes and a black eye that they’ve resigned themselves to not being able to hide
absolutely refusing to admit anything is wrong despite the poorly-muffled coughing and sniffling
fresh stitches underneath a suit or gown, shrugging off friendly hugs that land on just-closed wounds
something about the visualisation of hot saliva pooling in someone's mouth before they throw up.. yeah, you know what, hell yeah

Thinking about a character living alone, and illness making it hit home just how desperately lonely they feel. Just absolutely aching for company to take the edge off the misery... Instead, they're just by themself, making their congestion worse by crying, and there's not even anyone they can ask to pick upmore tissues
When people say “I’ve been fighting a cold all week”/“I’ve been trying not to get sick all week” as a means of announcing their efforts have failed… that is hot.
Asks/prompts for quick drabbles? 🥺 I wanna get the rust off and write more… scenario/illness or ailment/situation orrr dialogue all work
Caretaker holding whumpee’s head up gingerly, their fingers in whumpee’s hair, while bringing a glass of water to their lips.
Whumpee being too weak to hold their head up for long and only taking a couple small sips. They then drop their head back on the pillow and breathe heavily, already tired, with their eyes closed.
Caretaker places the glass on the nightstand and wipes whumpee’s face and neck with damp cloth. Whumpee sighs in relief.
feeling feral abt thermometers today.
🌡️ someone doing back-to-back readings with an oral thermometer because there's no way the first one was correct (it was).
🌡️ Person One using an infrared forehead scanning thermometer on Person Two, who's fallen asleep at their desk/sitting up/on the couch. Person Two basically never naps during the day unless something is wrong.
🌡️ someone desperately hoping that the thermometer says they have a fever. Having an actual tangible illness is the only way they can justify feeling so awful and wanting a day off. Maybe they try to fudge the numbers on the reading.

When a character with some sort of medical background is dangerously sick or injured, and they're definitely not in any state to treat themself but on autopilot they start listing out their symptoms in clinical language. Like they can't help but fall back on the familiar routine instead of processing the implications
Bonus if they're struggling to get the words out between gasps of pain/laboured breathing, or better yet mumbling because they're out of it
Mmmnmmmmmmm low blood sugar send post
I love it when Whumpee is leaning on things. They're dizzy, nauseous, in too much pain to stand, or just plain tired, and they can't get by without some kind of support.
Leaning on cabinets and against walls in people's houses. Propping their head up with their hands at the dining table. Steadying themself against a banister on the stairs. Holding on to the post of the traffic light for dear life while they wait to cross the road because if they stand still unsupported they will fall to the ground.
It's such a small display of I am not feeling good, but once another character notices it becomes so obvious. This person is weak and vulnerable. Either I can help them, or I can hurt them further. It's not like they're in any position to stop me.
Can't decide which I prefer -- delirious whumpees who ramble about a new thing every ten seconds because their mind is wandering relentlessly, or delirious whumpees who become fixated on one subject that they insist is important (and very likely is Not)
character with food insecurity making themselves sick one too many times, I have soo many prompts for this
overeating when there's an abundance of food around because they feel like they won't know when their next meal will come around and throwing up
similarly, overeating at an event when they keep seeing people not finishing their food because they don't want people wasting it, and again vomiting
panicking to the point of making themself sick when there's no food in the fridge or the budget is a little tighter
giving themselves food poisoning after not throwing out expired food because they thought it could still be usable
similarly, forcing themselves to eat food thats gone bad because they didn't eat it fast enough, and getting food poisoning
catching a stomach bug and desperately trying to keep everything down because they just ate a good, filling meal
eating way too quick because they've always had to do so to secure an adequate amount of food, and getting acid reflux or something similar
not eating during meal times so that others can get a bigger serving, and fainting or vomiting because of it
avoiding going to the doctor in exchange for a bigger food budget, and ending up way sicker than they wouldve been if they went in the first place
refusing to replenish the food they expelled during a stomach bug because they know it'll come up again and they dont want to waste anymore

character who was medically neglected as a child and now they're horrible with illnesses
getting seriously ill but not going to the doctor until they're in extreme danger because their parents did the same to them as a kid
never getting tested for food allergies / intolerances and just vomiting anytime they eat a certain food or food group
ignoring a chronic symptom they've had since they were a kid just to find out oh, they have (insert chronic illness / disease / condition)
accidentally being a shit caretaker to another character because they don't know proper remedies or medications to help them feel better
being extremely emetophobic because their parents would panic severely infront of them anytime they vomited
character being terrified of shots because they never had them growing up and now they have to make up for all the vaccines they missed
not knowing the signs right before they vomit so they can never make it to the toilet on time
character who loooves routine, consistency, and just having a set schedule, so much so that when they wake up feeling sick, they still force themselves to stick to their regimen and go through with everything they had planned for the day (ex. going to the gym or grocery shopping), only to end up vomiting all over themselves.
