Star Trek makes me soooo crazy cuz you got Picard saying things like "It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose."
And Data saying things like "I would gladly risk feeling bad at times, if it also meant that I could taste my dessert."
And Bashir saying things like “You can't go through life trying to avoid getting a broken heart. If you do, it'll break from loneliness anyway."
And Odo sayings things like "It has been my observation that one of the prices of giving people freedom of choice is that sometimes they make the wrong choice."
And I’m just supposed to be normal about it???
I’ve seen a post talking about Deep Space Nine being pre-9/11 show and I’ve never felt that more than Kira talking to Tom Riker and literally going “dude you’re so bad at being a terrorist, you don’t have that dog in you, if I was in your shoes right now I would’ve been murdering everyone I could because I was a an effective terrorist and that’s what an effective terrorist would do”, and it’s not presented as Kira being evil or unhinged, she’s just making a (correct!) observation about the situation.
One thing Star Trek regularly does so well is patch up overpowered-character plot holes with very specific inner traits.
“Why doesn’t Odo change into—?” Cause he’s bad at it and has rigid moral reasoning.
“Why doesn’t Data just rip that guy’s head off?” Cause he’s not violent.
“Why doesn’t Q just save that planet?” Cause he’s a bit of a dick.
From a writing perspective this is absolutely genius and I love it because my Hollywood necrosis brain wants the obvious plot answer but then I get a gentle finger wag from the writers that says “no no, remember this is not a normal show, it’s a Star Trek show.”

get that girl her Odo fries !!
I haven’t gotten to this part of the show yet but I imagine that this is exactly what happens. (Garak’s shirt says I love trans humans you can barely read it lol)
out of all the star trek chief engineers i think miles o’brien is the least likely to be a machinefucker. i think he loves his job but does not eroticize it. trip tucker is in the middle he would fuck a machine as long as it had tits and a sexy voice. b’elanna and geordi would go a step farther they would fuck a machine as long as it had a vaguely humanoid form but are happy to get pretty abstract with it. scotty would fuck the enterprise as is
DS9 as a show dares to ask the important questions, like for example “would Star Trek still be good if it was set at the food court at the mall??” and the answer to that is “yes, and actually it will somehow be better”
Sisko's Aubergine Stew
I thought it might be nice to stay on Deep Space Nine this week (since it was the 20th Anniversary of the series premiere last week) and sample some of Benjamin Sisko’s wonderful Aubergine stew. Judging by Dax’s reaction in The Nagus, this stew is well worth waiting for. And having tried it now myself, I must admit being pleasantly surprised about how good this was.
Sisko was apparently famous for this dish; he made it when he first met Jennifer, his future wife, and Dax was clearly very familiar with it. I followed the basic structure for a classic aubergine stew but feel free to change the type of meat in there if you wish.
Replicate your own (Serves 4)
2 eggplants (aubergines), diced into medium pieces 1 onion, diced 1 green capsicum, diced 2 cloves garlic, diced fine ½ leek, chopped into small rings 1 tin crushed tomatoes ½ teaspoon each of: dried oregano, dried thyme, cayenne pepper, ground tumeric, cumin and black pepper Salt 2 or 3 chicken drumsticks, with the bone in 1 or 2 sprigs of parsley, to garnish Olive oil
Begin by chopping the eggplant and sprinkle the pieces liberally with salt. Set aside while you chop the other vegetables.
In a large pot or saucepan, heat a splash of olive oil. Cook the onion and garlic until soft, then add the spices and cook for a minute or so until they are fragrant. Brush any excess salt off the eggplant and add to the pot, and cook for another couple of minutes.
Add the rest of the vegetables (capsicum and leek) and cook until they soften slightly. Then add the crushed tomatoes and stir so everything is coated in the tomatoes. Push the chicken drumsticks down into the vegetables, then put the lid on the pot and cook on a low heat for about 45 minutes, until the chicken is falling off the bones and the vegetables are soft.
Remove the chicken from the stew and shred the meat. Set aside, along with about ¼ of the stew mixture. Blend the remaining ¾ of the stew so that it is broken into smaller pieces but is still somewhat chunky.
To serve, mix the chicken meat back into the blended stew mixture, and top with the unblended pieces of vegetables. Garnish with parsley and serve.
Notes:
You can skip the step of salting the eggplant if you wish, but I find it helps the eggplant keep its shape while cooking and also means the eggplant doesn’t go bitter
This can be served with rice if wished.
