Fresh To Death

To tell someone (after the fact):

That you thought that’d be the person you would marry,

Why wait until after,

Tell them in the moment,

Or don’t tell them at all.

That’s not fair,

And not true.

Otherwise you would have said it earlier.

And maybe I would have told you I thought the same,

And maybe we wouldn’t be where we are now.

When I say wish you were here,

It’s because I really wish you were.

I stare out this window and see the water,

And imagine you waking up next to me.

And I imagine waking up everyday to a smile on your face as you look outside.

Eyes half squinted from the sun beaming in.

You love the view as much as I love the view of you.

I see the dock that I’ve only begun to rebuild and you sitting on it, journaling as you look out onto the water.

Out the other window is a broken sail boat,

I can see us fixing it up,

And taking it out on those days where the water reflects like glass.

The calm breeze glides across your body and wisps your hair across your sunglasses.

You look so happy.

How did I get to your dream place before you?

It feels like I did.

Maybe it’s really my dream place, but the only thing missing is you.

That’s what I mean by “wish you were here”
