âOh look Iâve been impaled.â
I actually feel sorry for it, and can truly identify with this. Some days I feel very much like I just flew headlong into my own demise. Metaphorically speaking, of course.

Would you like to know how it feels to vote for a protest candidate in a very close Presidential race? I can tell you.
It doesnât feel all that good even while youâre doing it. Then, after the Republicansâ idiot child king gets into office, it feels even worse.
I voted Green in the 2000 presidential election, for many of the same reasons that I see a lot of Bernie supporters talking about now. And for my sins, I actually have a record of my thinking at  the time, because I have been old on the internet for a long time now. Here is a chunk of something I wrote explaining my decision to vote for Ralph Nader in 2000:
âEspecially now that almost nobody is voting these days, the defection of a particular block of voters, even if itâs small, is of serious concern to either party. Thatâs why you see George jr. out there whoring himself for the Christian right, just like his father before him. But Gore doesnât whore for the liberal left, because he doesnât have to. He knows that as long as he doesnât actually start talking about criminalizing abortion and rounding gay people up in cattle cars, weâll stick with him just out of fear. Which means weâve already lost any power we had. We canât influence the Democratic partyâs agenda; we canât impact Goreâs platform; we canât put any kind of pressure on him. All we can do is concede, concede, concede. Telling ourselves while we do it that itâs all right, it could be worse.â
Ah, the pugnacious pungency of my younger days, how I miss it. Anyway, rereading that has reminded me of how BAD it feels to be in the position of having to choose between two candidates who donât seem willing to fight for anything you believe in. And I actually do not disagree, generally speaking, with Young Plaidderâs assessment of the evils of the two-party system. So, you know, it curbs my desire to yell at the Bernie Sanders supporters who are still not willing to vote for Clinton. Theyâre already in pain, itâs neither helpful nor strategic to make them feel worse.
Here are some things I know now that I was wrong about then:
1) I SEVERELY underestimated the amount of damage that an unqualified and incompetent President of the United States can cause. SEVERELY.
I have seen a number of comments from the Bernie or Bust perspective suggesting that if Trump got elected, heâs so uninterested in the whole business of government that he might not actually bother implementing what passes for his platform. Friends, you may be right or you may be wrong. But Iâll tell you what: the eight disastrous years of George W. Bushâs presidency, during which I am 100% convinced Dick Cheney made most of the major decisions, are all you need to teach you that incompetence at the top can be just as destructive and dangerous as malice. Itâs very, very unhealthy for any organization when the person who has all the executive power is someone who either canât or wonât use it effectively. It leads to factionalism, infighting, and corruption, because his subordinates know they can get up to whatever shit they want and nobody will bother stopping them. If you want to imagine a Trump presidency, try imagining a Trump cabinet. He doesnât even know enough Republican politicians to fill it with. Itâll either be cronies from his âbusinessâ dealings or names that Mike Pence fed to him figuring he wonât know any better. Who wants to see what a gang of evangelicals and profiteers get to do to this country while the boss is out golfing? I donât need to. Iâve seen it already. Itâs hideous. Weâre still trying to recover from it. I mean this is the reason that New Orleans was essentially destroyed by Hurricane KatrinaâŚand nothing was done about it. Because Bush put in some chum of his as the head of FEMA who could not have found his ass with both hands and a flashlight if you gave him a week to do it. And that is why there were corpses floating in the streets of New Orleans days after the hurricane was over. Incompetence kills. It doesnât have to be evil. Youâd be amazed how much damage stupid and untrained can do.
2) I didnât expect that we would experience a massive terrorist attack on US soil during the next 4 years.
That was not an unreasonable assumption to make in 2000. Itâs a completely unreasonable assumption to make in 2016. I think itâs also pretty clear which candidate would, given the opportunity to wreak VENGEANCE! that such attacks always provide, do the most damage with it. The entire twenty-first century, nearly, testifies to how catastrophic it is when the person in charge of responding to a terrorist attack on American soil is an idiot who has no understanding of dipolmacy or foreign policy and no way of making decisions apart from listening to his own ID.
3) I didnât appreciate the importance of the one issue Gore would actually have made some significant movement on: climate change.
I honestly still think Gore only did all the other crap he didâlike, say, choosing Lieberman as VPâbecause he wanted to have a chance to GET to the Oval Office and do something about climate change. He grasped the importance of it long before most other American politicians wanted to talk about it. I really wish heâd been in the Oval Office in 2000 to get the ball rolling. I really, really, really wish that.
Hereâs the good news from that paragraph: the Bernie Sanders campaign has already changed some of the things I was complaining about in 2000. The platform has moved left. The agenda has changed. There is pressure on the Clinton campaign, to which they have responded. In other words, just by running the primary campaign, Sanders has already achieved a lot of what I was mistakenly hoping my protest vote in 2000 was going to achieve.
Bernie Sandersâs speech last night was basically a bunch of variations on that theme: that the Sanders campaign itself has already had a greater impact than a protest vote (or protest abstention) would have, because it has changed the party. Has it changed Hillary Clinton? Who knows. But if the past 8 years have taught us much, itâs that in terms of shit you can get done, Congress matters just as much as the presidency if not more. Get enough left-thinking Democrats into Congress, and they can lead even if Hillary Clinton wonât.
So anyway. Iâm voting for Hillary Clinton. Because I donât want to have to say that I did not do everything I could to prevent George W. Bush from becoming the SECOND WORST ever President of the United States.
Thought it would be interesting to look back at this post from 2016. It is definitely depressing.
Iâm officially linking this post to anymore inane reblogs and asks.
There was a moment very early on in this post where I realized 2016 hadnât happened yet and it was, because I can find no more apt descriptor, bone-chilling.

When my mom and aunt were younger my aunt was in high school and my mom in middle school. A group of girls were bullying my aunt and one slapped her in the lunch room. The principal met with my grandma and the other mom. He said they werenât punishing the other girl because he didnât get involved in âgirl problems.â My grandma asked if that meant my aunt could retaliate the next time it happened and he said no then it would be a fight and theyâd both get in trouble.
So my grandma turned away from him and to the other mom and said âI have another daughter. She doesnât go to this school and sheâs a star softball player with her own bat. You can tell your daughter to stop bothering mine or you can drive her to the hospital with a shattered jaw. Thatâs your choice.â And walked out.
Few months later that girl stole a necklace from my aunt. My grandma called the cops and they all drove to her house to get it back. The cop came outside with it and said he told the family my grandma wouldnât press charges if they gave it back. My grandma took the necklace and said âThen youâre going to have to go in and tell them you lied because I am pressing charges. Sheâs a thief and I want her treated like one.â
My grandma was a single mom in the 70s with two daughters and she took no shit from men who tried to undermine her and her daughters.
She also got excommunicated and then re-communicated after bothering the Vatican enough to let her back in
She doesnât even like being Catholic and is Episcopalian now. It was more of a âYou canât fire me, I quit!â which is even better, at least to me
Can anybody explain whatâs the deal with Hozier to me?
Like, why does everybody like him? Whatâs so special about him? What did he do to be so beloved?
1. His music is varied enough in its influences of rock, folk, blues, gospel, soul, r&b, etc. that everyone can find something in the discography that they like, so people appreciate that itâs different from the norm but still accessible. He also tends to favor elaborate metaphors about love and storytelling over straightforward âooh girl I love your bodyâ types of songs.
2. He is a very outspoken social activist who integrates lessons about prejudice, domestic violence, and political change into his music and is often on the frontlines at fundraisers and rallies. This includes speaking out publicly about homophobia, racism, and sexism despite ostensibly being a straight white dude. As mentioned above, his female fans appreciate a general lack of objectification in his music, and he is also known for acknowledging that his success is due to the influence of women of color.
3. As much as one can say this of a celebrity that one does not know, he comes across as kind and conscientious person. Part of the LGBTQ+ following comes from a recognition of their appreciation (people throw various pride flags at him to hold up during concerts as a kind of tradition at this point) and subsequent removal of pronouns from much of his music over the years (whether this was purposeful or not is unclear but still often noted). He has also consistently eschewed expensive VIP packages in favor of free meet-and-greets after shows.
4. His debut album was heavy on the morbidity and influenced by his obsession with Seamus Heaney poetry about bog bodies, so a sort of internet cult of personality sprang up referring to him as the âBog Manâ who may actually be several thousand years old. This is contrasted with his actual personality as a Certified Millennial who used a flip phone until a couple of years ago and makes frequent quality shitposts on Twitter. The juxtaposition of this makes the Interwebz go bananas.
5. His hair is long and fluffy and more or less has its own fandom at this point.
Just updating to say he has confirmed the removal of pronouns is deliberate.
Heâs also made some attempts at including nonbinary/gender-neutral pronouns in his songs and activism! You can tell heâs not totally comfortable with it in the âplease send help I do not think Iâm doing this correctlyâ sense, but heâs committed himself to the learning process.
Also, this wasnât noted above: this man has ZERO media filter. What you see is what you get. I took him some Irish sweets at a stagedoor meeting since heâd talked about the difficulty in finding them in the US, and his handler literally had to take the package away from him and go ânot now, Andrewâ because I distracted him and he started dismantling it right then and there to get to the cookies. Youâre not gonna see Lady Gaga do that because sheâs got a work persona. He doesnât.
Also the #1 charity type he supports is anti-domestic violence and womenâs support. He doesnât just say âIâm a feminist,â he puts his money where his mouth is. (Literally.)
And to elaborate on his meet and greets: he always tries to spend as much time as possible with his fans. There have been instances where he met fans after a show even though there wasnât supposed to be a m&g because the fans had been waiting for 2h in the cold. Itâs not just a âhereâs your signature byeâ m&g. He genuinely enjoys whatever you give him and says thank you about 7 times per person. (Iâm not exaggerating)
Also heâs a bloody GOOD musician. He tends to downplay his own guitar skills, but he has vocal training from a world-famous choir and has a gorgeous voice, along with the wonderful melodies, complex lyrics, and incredible stage charisma. And I second what everyone else has said above ^
All of this is true but I think Point #4 is the best explanation Iâve ever seen of his widespread memetic popularity on Tumblr.
