a muscle in felix's jaw twitched, the only outward sign of distress as the realisation dawned on him. not again — julian couldn't be doing this to him again. not another inane little excursion. and after he'd put on his finest coat and jacket, too, and taken such care washing and combing his hair. the unfairness of it was, frankly, staggering. ❝ i assume we're only here for a few quick errands, then? ❞ he asked, forcing a pained grin, desperately hopeful that there might still be a party or a luncheon in his immediate future. that julian had more in mind for their day together than this. ❝ buying some cider and pastries to take away with us, perhaps. ❞
⸻ ･ﾟ ✧ julian snorted, his head shaking in sheer amusement as he placed an encouraging hand on felix’ shoulder. he was dressed casually for the occasion; a loose, white shirt hastily tucked in his trousers combined with his mud-covered, worn-out boots. the difference between them couldn't have been greater if it weren’t for the similar manner in which they carried themselves; graceful and refined, a posture that came with years of vigorous training in etiquette. “ don’t you find this place wonderful ? it's as real and unfiltered as this town can get. absolutely marvellous, i reckon. ” guiding him further down the farmer’s market as he beamed at nearly every trinket he spotted, julian halted in front of an elderly lady. she appeared grateful to see them both, welcoming them with a bright smile. “ felix, i'd like to formally introduce you to mrs. chen. she needs two pairs of strong hands today to aid in repairing her shed. ”

" would you please stop moving so much ? honestly, you are the worst model, " doe eyes peeked up from behind the worn pages of her sketchbook, the tone of her delicate voice along with the subtle tilt of her lips would indicate that there was no real bite to her words. and in julian's defense, the wooden benches in carmine park didn't exactly make the most ideal art studio ... for a very fleeting moment, she couldn't help the way her ( distracted ) eyes lingered on him, but hana averted her gaze back down to her parchment as she felt the tips of her ears warm and the pit of her stomach flutter oh - so lightly ... she cleared her throat gently before speaking again. " by the way, my father says the pond has finally frozen over at the farm — we should go ice skating whenever you have a free day. "

⸻ ･ﾟ ✧ all things considered, julian wouldn’t necessarily consider himself to be a patient man. he was constantly on the go, seeking out new ventures each passing day while unabashedly indulging in the excitement and unpredictability of his own impulses. underneath it all, however, sheltered something of a people pleaser. he could hardly deny his friends anything— especially when they were as gentle and lovely as hana. julian scrunched up his nose, moving his hand to scratch where he felt an itch on his arm. “ it’s hardly my fault, han, the insects here have decided to feast on me. ”
at first he’d found great enjoyment in the simplicity of observing her— his eyes dutifully trailing over the movements of the pencil in her hand against the parchment. yet his gaze had been quick to shift upwards, carefully studying her delicate features as if her beauty was something he wished to capture and remember for the rest of eternity. “ that sounds like a charming way to start the upcoming winter season, ” he mused, lips curling into a smile. “ though you must promise to teach me some of the tricks i saw you practice last year. it was near magical, the way in which you were gliding over the ice. ”
"are you doubting my navigation skills?" roni huffs, a slight ire in her tone. the frustrations from hiking longer than they should have been was getting to her, but that didn't mean she'd led them astray — she'd been on this path countless times before! she knew exactly which rotting tree to turn left at and ... roni stops in her tracks and turns to julian, her lips drawn down into a frown. "are you saying you want to turn back?"
⸻ ･ﾟ ✧ “ i wouldn’t dare, ” hands shot up in surrender, eyes wide akin to a deer caught in headlights. while he might’ve considered himself to be rather fearless, he wasn’t stupid enough to dare offending her. yet the heaviness in his body spoke of a tiredness he couldn't ignore much longer, yearning to be enjoying the sandwiches he'd prepared earlier that day. upon seeing roni’s frown, however, something ugly settled in his chest before being overtaken by a new sense of determination. “ no, no, let’s continue. we’ve never explored this side of the forest. who knows what we’ll stumble upon if we keep on following this path. ”
truth be told the woman was really only half paying attention to the rest of what the other was saying, after the way he phrased those first words; chin rested on her hand as she nods along wistfully, thinking about what it would feel like were he to ever actually hold her up...those arms were strong and tan but he would for sure be gentle about it, she just knew it, because that was the type of guy he was... "...r-right, right, yeah, of course...I mean love doing this! like...for the animals! they're all so cute and...cuddly! i-i certainly don't mind, I mean i feel like I could just be here spending time with them forever, if I could! just...filling out forms and...feeding them, and roger's been recovering great, too, which has been so nice to get to be a part of, you know?"
⸻ ･ﾟ ✧ he’s nodding along to her words rather thoughtfully, heart entirely warmed by her dedication and gentleness towards a greater cause. his smile widened, positively beaming at her now he was certain they were on the same page. “ i do feel similarly. oftentimes my heart refuses to return home, wishing to remain here instead. there’s always something to do; whether it'd be paperwork or tending to the animals. though releasing them after you created such a profound bond with them is undoubtedly the most heartbreaking part. no matter how rewarding it may be to bring them back home safe and sound. ” he recalled his very own first rescue; how he spent countless nights by the rabbit's side and how terribly hurtful the goodbye had been. “ say, there’s a sweet goat who just birthed six does. would you like to see them ? they need bottle feeding. ”

It was too sunny and too bright, despite being covered from head to toe, having her hat and shades, it was a bad time for Morgana to be outside. Damn this frail body. She should have demanded that Malachi accompanied her.
Pippin seemed agitated on her shoulder, clearly feeling her distress as she leaned on the wall for support. Why was everything spinning?
The raven haired woman didn't even notice when her parrot flew off, trying to find someone to help.
⸻ ･ﾟ ✧ julian had lost count of strange occurrences and odd happenings a long time ago. yet leaving his position behind the counter in favour of following a squawking parrot might’ve been the most peculiar instance as of late. he hadn’t been able to shake a foreboding sense from crawling underneath his skin, and he’d rather look like a damned fool than live with the consequences of impassiveness. “ easy there, friend, ” he uttered as he chased after the parrot, nearly tripping over his own feet while attempting to keep up with its speed.
his movements abruptly halted when he spotted a woman all alone, visibly unwell. the bird confirmed its intentions by comfortably settling on her shoulder. body moving instinctively, julian cautiously approached the stranger. gently placing his hand against her side in order to support her weight, his eyebrows knitted together in grave concern. “ miss ? are you alright— is there anything i can do for you ? ”

" okay, well, mother dramatized that entire thing. " she defended herself, looking at julian with a pointed stare that said you know how she is. " i was not asleep outside all night long, collapsed in the backyard. it was a few hours and i was asleep on the veranda! " roselie scoffed, taking a bite of her ham and cheese omelette — breakfast for lunch was her favorite. he knew that.
" is it so hard to believe i simply fell asleep normally? mother refuses to accept that. the breeze was nice and i was looking up at the stars . . . " and just like that, she had drifted away into sleep — dreaming those fairytale dreams once again. " enough about family lies, though, i wanna hear more about your adventures! you're so lucky you got out of amethyst, i hear the housing in ruby is gorgeous. "
⸻ ･ﾟ ✧ julian couldn’t mask the fondness he felt for his dear cousin, lips curling into a gentle smile as his eyes simultaneously softened at the depiction of events. it pulled at his heartstrings; twenty-eight years by each other’s side yet she still remained a little bird captured in a golden cage. there’d been several ( some outright desperate ) attempts made in order to set her free, though all in vain. their parents simply wouldn’t allow it.
picking a tomato off his plate, julian shook his head in disbelief. “ of course she dramatised the whole thing— even mother knows aunt lyla’s tales are far too fantastical. she insisted you nearly gave yourself pneumonia out there. ” his eyebrows settled into a deep frown, lips falling into a thin line. “ i’m on your side, but you must be more prudent about getting caught. your mother uses everything in her might to keep you close. it's worrisome. ”
at the mention of his housing in ruby ridge his demeanour shifted, any and all previous concerns disappearing like snow before the sun. “ it’s entirely lovely and pleasant— you'd adore the place. ” he’d have to convince uncle stephan to plan a visit. “ i’ve been spending my days off tidying up the garden after discovering deer and squirrels love to stop by. i’m considering building a temporary shelter for them— something warm and cozy to help them through the winter. ”

⸻ ･ﾟ ✧ “ will you read to me one day ? ” julian opened one eye, head tilting from where he'd been resting against a tree in favour of observing his newest friend. he’d invited the other to carmine park, wishing to bask in the last rays of sunshine before the season ended. “ it’s intriguing me— how lost in thought you appear to be whenever you hold that pen and journal. ”

⸻ ･ﾟ ✧ “ i apologise for holding you up, susie. ” his smile was apologetic, eyes reflecting a hint of remorse as it didn’t quite feel just to have her stay at the kennels so late. though, admittedly, it was equally as hard to deny the elation coursing through his body at the prospect of spending more time with her— to get to know her better. “ there’s been a vast increase in rescues. and while i love those little boogers to death, it also broadens our workload. ” he scrunched his nose, brushing a hand through his own hair in an attempt to soothe himself. he’d been terribly worried about the animals and their proper recovery. “ on behalf of the entire animal welfare society, i wish to express my heartfelt gratitude for your help. ”

⸻ ･ﾟ ✧ “ are you positive we’re heading in the right direction ? ” julian adjusted the strap of his bag; filled with drinks and treats for them to enjoy on their perfectly pleasant picnic near obsidian lake. yet as time passed with no clear destination spot in sight, julian grew weary. he didn't mind the forest per se, and wholeheartedly trusted roni's inclining towards adventure, he simply wasn't entirely certain what obsidian lake sheltered at night. “ if it’s much further down we won’t be able to make it back to the valley before sunset... ”

⸻ ･ﾟ ✧ his laugh was bright, boisterously reverberating throughout the diamond room as if they were the only people there. and for a moment julian supposed they truly were as both music and chatter gradually faded into the background. leaving only her to focus on, a woman so unlike anyone he’d ever met before. properly enchanted and delightfully giddy, julian continued his tale. “ —and then the bastard stole the guitar. ” he winced ever so slightly at the memory, both hands moving to cover his cheeks as they reddened significantly. “ i had to walk home all by myself, entirely soaked. thereafter i had to explain to father what happened to his precious heirloom. i wasn’t keen on giving up music, but i’ve been strictly prohibited from touching a guitar ever since. so i suppose nowadays the flute is my most cherished companion. ”
