₊˚⊹ ⁀➴ ᰔ‧₊˚⊹ closed started. an early afternoon in ruby ridge — feat. hana & kasin !
she had been hyper - fixated on the current piece of unfinished artwork perched upon her oak easel — as such, the artist had barely heard the knocking on her front door. if she had taken a moment to listen, surely she would have taken notice of the oh - so familiar rapping of knuckles against wood. how could she not ? kasin had a particular way of announcing his presence that hana grew accustomed to after all their years of friendship. she hustled to answer the beckoning, her paint - riddled smock still tied securely around her waist in her sudden rush.
" kas ! " his arrival enticed nothing but smiles and a warm, giddy feeling in the center of her chest. " what brings you here ? are you patrolling the neighborhood ? "

ever since coming out of her shell -- and by shell, she really meant family expectations -- qingyue has had her mind set on chaos. the prim and proper kind of chaos, of course. she wouldn't really do anything to bring shame to her parents, but with a sweet smile of a spoiled lady, she could talk her way out of hellfire itself, if she had to.
still, the fun kind of chaos harmed no one.
waltzing into the town hall with a beaming smile upon her face, qingqing all but purred in her friend's direction. "I sure hope so! if a girl would like to start a woodcarving workshop, where would a girl, theoretically, enroll? I was thinking of putting something fun up for the ladies of prism with maybe making artistic jewelry or other essentials like hair brushes, or secret codes carved in seemingly innocent plates?" she chirped.
"with holidays coming in, I'm sure that a handmade gift is more precious than anything currently on the market." she already had a list of people she wouldn't mind gifting sawdust to.
in a small town such as this, where social status and money meant everything, the sudden depletion of the xu family's wealth was something that riddled the valley with vicious whispers and judgmental gazes. but through it all, hana was steadfast in remaining by qingyue's side; the keats family had never been keen on involving themselves in matters of societal drama. in fact, hana was one of the few ladies in prism falls who did not abandon qingyue when misfortune struck. " oh, qingqing ! what a sight for sore eyes, " hana's bright giggle filled the room and she listened intently to her dear friend's proposition. " a woodcarving workshop, you say ? that sounds absolutely lovely, " her smile is warm, her eyes filled with fondness as nimble fingers searched through a neatly arranged cabinet. it wasn't long before she located the appropriate form and slid the parchment towards the other brunette. " here, just fill this out and bring it back to me as soon as possible ! i'll make sure it gets to the right department. "
“It’s incredibly freezing.” He shouted through his laughter. He splashed some of the water and let out a large gasp. “But that’s part of the fun.” He shivered “r-right?” He asked almost trying to convince himself. He nodded fast. “You’ll never go thirsty. You can go deep sea swimming.” He shrugged. “Come over.” He gestured
" well, that depends entirely if these aquatic powers entail breathing underwater. if not, you could still drown if you tried your luck at deep sea swimming, " she did her best to stifle her laughter, but it came out anyways. she had never witnessed someone with such spirit in the valley before and his giddy exuberance was almost refreshing. he spoke to her as if they had known each - other for years, and maybe it was foolish to even consider, but hana found herself carefully stepping down from her rock at his request. she would likely blame the cold for such actions if ever prompted in the future. she only hesitated for a moment before toeing off her shoes, and lifting the skirts of her dress. a soft squeak left her lips as the cold water reached her ankles and she looked towards the stranger with widened doe - like eyes. she made her way towards him and instinctively grasped his forearm. " if i get frostbite, i am blaming you entirely, sir ! "
— That would be lovely, thank you. — Morgana replied as she followed Hana inside. She was thankful to get out of the sun and into somewhere more secluded. Whlie she was covered basically from head to toe and had choosen a more late time to approach the stranger, she still had some disconfort.
When inside, the woman took a seat where it was offerd to her and waited for the other to join her so they could discuss business.
— Have you painted all your life, Hana? You are trully remarcable with a brush.
hana was suddenly very grateful that she had taken the early morning to do a substantial tidying up of her home as she led morgana into the sitting room. she seldom took visitors at her own place of residence, but hana was the type of girl who was prepared for guests nonetheless. and as fate would have it, the paintress was already in the process of preparing her usual afternoon brew of earl grey; all that was needed was to add a second teacup ! as she joined morgana in the parlor, hana was quick to pour the older woman a cuppa, gesturing to the little sugar cubes and warm milk in the center of the tea tray. " oh, yes. as soon as i was able to hold a brush, i'm sure. again, i appreciate your kind words, morgana, " she replied, fondness and pride in her voice. she prepared her own cup of tea before speaking once more. " so, you mentioned wanting your dear pet in your portrait, yes ? — are we talking cat or dog ? "
the fact of the matter is, losing hana as a friend was a devastating loss — one that continued to haunt her to this day. it wasn't enough to see the mess roni had made of hana's work at the winter festival that day, but each time she'd tried to apologize afterwards and was met with an upturned nose and shake of a head, roni felt her heart drop and break each time. it's why roni's so aloof towards her now, careful not to spill her heart to unforgiving and dismissive ears. there was only so much rejection roni could take!
"well, you could have fooled me." roni responds, swallowing hard. she piles the letters and parcels in a haphazard pile, accepting the stack hana had collected with a very small and mumbled thanks. "like i said, i'm fine. don't let my potential injuries worry you for the rest of the day. god forbid i ruin your life again."
hana wished that she knew back then how her stubborn ways and unwillingness to forgive a simple, genuine mistake would cause her chest to ache every time she saw roni in the present days. it was useless to ponder what could have been, but she couldn't seem to help herself at times — how much would their friendship have blossomed ? how would her life been different if she still had this dear, supportive friend. " roni, please ... " her soft gaze landed upon the other femme, vulnerability glistening in doe eyes.
" w - we don't ... i - " she sighed, fumbling for the right wording. " it doesn't have to be this way between us anymore ... "

❛ yes .ᐣ ❜ ingrid turns away from where she'd been shelving the newest arrivals; warmth growing in her eyes as she recognises the stranger's face. even as far removed from society as ingrid typically is— preferring to keep her nose in her books; she still knows enough to recognize the prized daughter of the keats.
❛ you're no bother at all, ❜ she seeks to reassure hana, offering her a soft smile and beckons for her to follow as ingrid begins to head down the aisles. ❛ we do have a couple, though i'm afraid the options are rather limited just because no one buys them. though if you can't find what you're looking for, i'm sure we can order them for you. ❜
whatever inkling of timidness still present in her chest vanished at the reassuring timbre of the other woman's voice. happily, hana followed closely behind, mahogany hues lingering on newly placed novels and displays. she made a mental note of titles that sounded particularly interesting; ones that she would further look into when she wasn't in search for a new sketchbook. " ah, what a shame. they truly are lovely, " she mused out - loud as she browsed the limited selection, the smile on her lips widening as she reached for a gorgeous leather - bound book, adorned with golden trimmed ornate tooling along the spine. " oh, no need to go through all that trouble — this one is absolutely perfect, don't you think ? "
⸻ ・゚ ✧ all things considered, julian wouldn’t necessarily consider himself to be a patient man. he was constantly on the go, seeking out new ventures each passing day while unabashedly indulging in the excitement and unpredictability of his own impulses. underneath it all, however, sheltered something of a people pleaser. he could hardly deny his friends anything— especially when they were as gentle and lovely as hana. julian scrunched up his nose, moving his hand to scratch where he felt an itch on his arm. “ it’s hardly my fault, han, the insects here have decided to feast on me. ”
at first he’d found great enjoyment in the simplicity of observing her— his eyes dutifully trailing over the movements of the pencil in her hand against the parchment. yet his gaze had been quick to shift upwards, carefully studying her delicate features as if her beauty was something he wished to capture and remember for the rest of eternity. “ that sounds like a charming way to start the upcoming winter season, ” he mused, lips curling into a smile. “ though you must promise to teach me some of the tricks i saw you practice last year. it was near magical, the way in which you were gliding over the ice. ”
there were times where she could have sworn she had ( secretly ) caught his stare lingering in her direction. but, she would never dare to bring up the topic, or even question if it actually meant something or not. by all means, julian would make for an excellent marriage prospect due to his family name itself. and it was no secret that both of their families were open to the idea. the only problem ? julian's friendship meant more to hana than she could ever fully articulate — there was nothing in the world that was important enough to ever jeopardize it's standing. hana's lips curled wider at the corners. she hadn't exactly expected him to reject her inquiry, but his happy acceptance of it had her giddy nonetheless. " near magical ? " she parroted with a fond chuckle. " well, when you put it like that, how could i possibly say no ? " then, a few strokes of her graphite were laid precisely against parchment before she lifted and turned the sketchbook in his direction — a near - mirrored image of the man sitting beside her in all his glory. " what do you think ? "
it wasn't her idea, but the wide eyes girl reminded her so much of her once-sheltered old self that she caved in without much thought. in fact, hana could, quite possibly, be the only person she'd met in too long a time who truly might understand her -- might even become her bosom friend. so, when the young socialite asked for a riding less, yanyan nodded without hesitation.
perhaps she ought to have considered it better.
but, xiao hei seemed amused and rather fond of the newly acquainted brunette, so she pivoted once more. "I won't pressure you if you're not ready, but... I've quite literally been in your shoes before. I wasn't really encouraged to learn horseback riding, but I used it as a bargaining chip with my mother for the stuff she had wanted me to do and I was unwilling to do them of my own volition." like attending the seemingly never-ending balls and... matchmaking soirees.
the latter had been the worst.
"how about I take you for a ride and then you decide if that's something you'd like to learn? I promise I won't let you fall to your nose." she lightly chuckled, then motioned her chin at the saddle. "do you want to try mounting him yourself or shall I pull you up myself?" she did not mind either way.
perhaps it would be considered too soon by conventional standards to tell, but hana felt a sense of connection when it came to huayan. she admired her in a way she never had before; she was an only child, but she knew that if she did have an older sister, it would feel quite similar to the manner in which she looked up to yanyan. her heart ached to think about the possibility of the older woman leaving the valley if she grew bored of the quaint town. " no, i’m ready, yanyan ! as ready as i will ever be anyways, " hana mused out - loud, nodding her head decidedly.
at huayan's proposition, hana pondered for a moment or two ... " you don't mind helping me up ? the few times i have been horseback, i believe i rode side - saddle. so ... i'm not exactly sure how to mount him properly. "
aurelian had made a few friends since coming to prism a year and a half ago, but none he had liked as much as young hana. in fact, there were quite a few of the young ones that he had come to consider as something akin to found family -- and the young artist had, without a doubt in mind, been one of them. patting her shoulder and humming lightly, he spoke, "oh, it's no trouble, dearie. not in the least. you are much better company than the weaving loom and the guests always fluttering about with ridiculous -- and not at all imaginative -- requirements. it is but a rare few that can grace themselves with your knowledge and expression."
in a colourless world full of sharp, jagged edges, she was the soft whisper of color, a gentle stroke of brush that blurred the bleeding shards, dripping with darkness and decay.
a wide smile stretches his features and aurelian nods more vigorously, more to himself than to her. "it shall be on display of course. centre of the room, where all gazes are naturally falling to. or, perhaps, no. no, no, no, why should others enjoy it as well? it should be a crowning piece above my hearth, so I can watch it to my heart's content." he mused out loud.
affection in her family did not usually come in the form it did for most. andrew keats loved his daughter to the depth of his bones, but he was a terribly stoic man who was not keen to express his emotions in an unabashed patriarchal society. her mother, as doting as she could be, was still mostly dictated by material items. all that to say — affection was more often than not expressed through the art of gifting. and hana believed a painting created for aurelian through her own volition was the perfect way to let the older man know that she was grateful for his almost - fatherly kinship. she lifted a hand to her lips as she giggled at his retort, nose crinkling with amusement. " you have no idea how much it gladdens my heart to hear you say that. you'll be the one of the firsts in the valley with an original hana keats art piece — i'd consider myself lucky if i were you, dear friend, " the brunette jested, continuing down the familiar path of the gardens with a slight skip in her step.

— Please, call me Morgana. — She replied. If she had been asked to be adressed by her first name, then she would offer the same cortesy to the other. This one was polite, she liked her already. The raven haired woman cleaned her throat, adjusting her posture ever so slightly.
— Indeed, you could. You see, I've moved in town quite recently, not even a year yet, and I must say, I've fallen in love with the scenary and overal pitorest energy here. — She started. — I was wondering if it would be possible to comission a painting of myself in my favorite spot in town with you. I'd like my pet in the painting as well, if that's not a problem.
doe eyes remain fixated on the regal woman standing before her, and for a moment, hana couldn't tell if she was intimidated or awestruck by her; she quickly determined it was a heavy dose of both ... there was just something in the way morgana carried herself ( distinguished and formidable ) that made hana's little heart flutter in her chest. " morgana, of course, " she relayed with a polite nod of her head, the grin on her lips increasing in size as the other woman continued on. " oh, it would be my absolute pleasure ! " hana nodded, eagerness painted clear across her pretty visage. " would you like to come inside to discuss a time and place ? i could put on a pot of tea, as well. "
☆゚*·゚whenever allyson felt stressed, she told stories, so it was only fair that she was a librarian. she could spend all of her days surrounded by books, stories, and wonderful adventures that could take her so many spectacular places. the blonde found that organizing the books and putting them back where they belonged was weirdly satisfying. it gave her a sense of calm and order, something that she needed in her life. after a particularly bad night of nightmares, she always knew that going into work and organizing all of the books would give her something else to focus on.
hearing a shuffling that didn't sound normal, allyson rushed toward it, noticing a girl fall and was now laying on the floor covered in books. she didn't want to laugh, but only because it had happened to her before. "damages? oh gosh, are you damaged? that's all that matters. the books and adventures will be okay. they can be bound if anything happened." allyson bent down, picking up the books around her, putting them in a stack.
hana had been raised a proper lady, and she liked to believe she retained her sense of decorum and etiquette into her adulthood. but it appeared that she was not immune to the occasional bout of clumsiness. taking a fall, and causing a bit of a scene caused the apples of her cheeks to sport a bright shade of crimson. though, she hadn't much time to dwell on her ever - growing embarrassment as the local librarian rushed over to her aid. after a moment, she reached for the fallen book closest to her, placing it right on top of the blonde's neat stack. " all is well, honest, " hana ensured with a gentle nod, rising to her feet and fixing her skirts before extending a hand towards the other woman.
" but i do believe we've not yet the pleasure of meeting ... i'm hana, and i am most grateful for your assistance. "
