Diptych

Overall I like the look of the final product of my diptych. I used a picture frame to create a shadow box effect. I think to improve on the contrast I could have chosen a more colourful transparent to create more of a colour difference from the black and white background.

Weaving the Craft

Although the 2 pictures didn’t line up well, weaving the 2 pictures together was enjoyable. The black and white film enlargement contrasts well against the colored digital print. I think I could have conveyed a better message if I made the 2 pictures contrast beyond the tonal range (through positioning and lighting)

Photogram

To improve this photogram I would have added more objects of different transparencies to have create a more interesting image.

Pinhole Camera Image

This pinhole image was exposed exposed for 7 seconds on a bright day. I like the good contrast of the photo due to the tonal difference between the dark sky and the bright building. Due to wind moving the box slightly the image came out slightly blurry/shaky.

How did studying photographic design help me to become a better photographer?

Studying photographic design helped me be a better photographer by giving me examples that showed me what good photographic design looks like. Which angles, light levels, where the focus item is placed etc. are all things I payed more attention to as the assignment carried on.

How was I environmentally conscious in this project?

I had to be environmentally conscious during this project because of the clutter in my garage, I actually had very limited space to work with even though the room was relatively large. Using the reduced space, being environmentally conscious meant thinking about what about the clutter I could use as an interesting subject.

Did I have any challenges with technology while doing this project? How did I solve them?

Composition

The composition of the photo is not immediately evident at first glance to the photo. The main focus is obviously on the car. However the details of the car implement the rule of thirds. Between the fog lights, head lights or license plate; the viewers focal point can alternate between points. However the focus can never mainly be placed in the center of the photograph, making the picture more interesting. Other than the rule of thirds, additional elements and principles seen in the photo include line, space, emphasis, and rhythm. All other elements and principles of the picture are seen in the grille and bumper grille, emphasizing the points of contrast in the photo. The horizontal lines on the bottom half of the front of the car create emphasis on the straight lines and curved edges of of the license plate and fog light. Whereas the vertical lines of the grille on the top half of the front of the car emphasize the wide headlights of the car.

Contrast

At first glance on the photo, contrast is most evident in the dark colour of the car and the light colour of the licence plate with a light glare. There is also contrast seen in the reflection of the car, half of it is lighter than the other half as a result of the reflection of the sky. Contrast can also be seen in the diversity of horizontal lines in the bottom half and vertical lines in the top half.

Communication

This picture has a high contrast. The black shopvac piece contrasts the white bucket it is in.

Texture is shown in this photo through the bristles of the brush. The scatter and displacement of some sections create a deeper depth of field into the brush as well as increasing the “pokey” texture seen.

Diagonal placement is evident in this photo through the slanting and diagonal placement of the bottom of the ladder, the main focus of the picture.

This picture is taken from a high angle, evident in the way the first bottle is clearer and larger, then the jugs get smaller the lower they are placed.

This photo uses the rule of thirds to emphasize the focus of the picture. The main focal point, the hose nozzle, is placed to the right rather than the center of the picture.

This photo shows the element space. The holes in the hose reel as well as the indented section show negative space while the reel itself is the positive space.

This photo shows blurry/low clarity because all parts are blurry and there is no main focus to the photo.

This photo shows a crisp clarity because most/all components of the shot are clear and in focus.

This is a close up shot. The closer screw driver bits are in clearer focus and more detail than the ones further to the right.

Low contrast is evident in this photo in how majority of the photo is dark, however a select few details are lighter in contrast to the light.
