it's like. you're still a minor so you basically have no rights and are wholly at the mercy of your parents, even if they're chill. BUT you're old enough to do things like drive and have a job so you're treated like an adult even though you aren't one and don't get the benefits of it. also you're going through a lot of things for the first time, like relationships, sex, drugs/alcohol, and then even stuff like jobs, stress, school work, friendship drama, balancing a life, and finally being able to set personal boundaries. and no one believes you if you're struggling with this, because theyre either your age and going through it themself or they're older and think just because they've "been through worse" that your problems don't exist, despite how this has been the worse you've ever been through up to this point. no one offers you guidance on things you actually need unless it's in an over-bearing and controlling way, like how to set boundaries at your first job, how to navigate a relationship, how to prioritize your wellbeing. AND then like if you're struggling with mental illness or chronic illness, a different neurotype, or if you suffer from the discrimination of racism or homophobia or transphobia or misogyny or ableism, then you're screwed!! especially if your parents are unsupportive/neglectful/toxic/abusive/not there!! no one believes you're struggling when you're a teen. and that in itself i think is what makes the whole experience so traumatic for a lot of people.
