Here’s 2!  (TMNT 2012) Shinigami x Karai.

At first i wasn’t sure if i shipped them or not but then i kept looking back at they’re chemistry & relation and it evolved meh. Plus Shini called Karai “Senpai” So I’m pretty sure they’re canon xD

It’s the Christmas season, and her father is away on a business matter. It isn’t the first time he’s been gone during a time where everyone else is so focused on “family”. Karai isn’t broken up about it.

The only thing new about this Christmas in particular is a fairly recent companion. Shinigami. A girl who was as much a mystery to Karai as Karai kept herself a mystery to her.

Their relationship is an odd one. They had once shared a target for their respective alliances, gotten in each other’s way, and after some disagreement found themselves coming to a truce of sorts. Training a pickpocket ninjutsu in secret had felt like a small price to pay to keep her father’s approval. Only it was slowly starting to get less small, and the secrecy was getting difficult to maintain.

So, Karai’s actually relieved her father is gone this Christmas. There’s a weight off her shoulders and her secret friend is much easier to keep secret. Much, much easier, since Shini convinces her to go shopping during the busiest and most crowded time of year. She’s just scored a payload for another of her ‘errands’, and Karai has an allowance her father has kindly given her to do with as she pleases. (Within reason.)

It’s as they’re browsing another clothing store that Karai clocks on to Shini’s expensive taste. It’s not something she’s noticed before. It shouldn’t be unusual because, up until recently, they hadn’t simply… 'hung out’.

Karai doesn’t know about Shini’s past, but she’s gathered enough about her present. Shady people and underground connections found use in an unassuming, innocent-looking child with a quick hand. Shini is just one such child. Sometimes she’s a delivery girl, sometimes she’s a thief, sometimes she’s a saboteur, and sometimes she’s just bait or distraction for a heist. Shini is open about all the things she does for crooks at age fourteen, soon-to-be fifteen, but her past always has vibes of 'off-limits’. Karai thinks about the home life she keeps off-limits. The feeling it mutual.

At some point they take a break from Shini’s beeline from store to store to break for lunch, and sit in content silence by a fountain for a while. Twinkling lights from store front displays catch Karai’s eyes and the sound of laughter and chatter from passers-by fills Karai’s ears. Come to think of it, this is the first time she’s ever been out like this. It’s now strange and uncomfortable territory as soon as the thought comes to her.

She’s never had the chance to do this before. She was schooled at home alongside her training. The only times Karai has ever socialised with children her age is for one of father’s missions or tests. And here she is, calm and casual, sitting out in the open like the vulnerable and exposed heir to a powerful ninja clan she’s made herself. How was she so at ease?

“Hey!”

Karai feels a nudge at her arm and comes back to the here and now. Shini is smiling, but there’s a concerned crease in her brow.

“You’re not spacing out on me, are you?”

“N-no, I’m fine,” Karai says quickly, taking another mouthful of her food. There’s a pause, and she can feel Shini watching her, before she adds, “This is just… weird.”

“Not used to the festivities? Can’t say I’m surprised.” Shini’s face turns sly. “Your father doesn’t sound the type to decorate a tree, no?”

No, he isn’t. But she doesn’t bring herself to say that out loud. Karai thinks for another way to put it. “I’ve… never done this before. Y'know. All this… 'friend’ stuff.” She hesitates to look at Shinigami again. “This isn’t weird for you?”

“…No.” There’s something soft in Shini’s expression. “I used to do this all the time with… well, with my family.” Then something sad comes to the surface as her eyes flicker away from a brief moment, before she asks, “Does this mean you want to go home? I can understand your concern. Considering.”

Karai watches her carefully as she thinks. She decides it isn’t Shini making this weird. It’s Karai. It’s the stupid secrets and sneaking and midnight trainng that’s making this weird. It’s the hidden figures behind Shini’s errands and the looming threat of disapproval over befriending an outsider. It’s that, only now, Karai hasn’t considered Shini an ally of circumstance for weeks, and how even like this she has this want for more. It’s the unexplainable feeling in her gut when she looks at Shini in the right light.

And yet none of that is weird enough for her to want to stop. “Uh, no. I’m not leaving until you help me get a cool jacket.”

Shini’s face brightens in an instant, and the twinkle of Christmas decorations catch her eyes just right. “You know what would suit you?”

“What?”

“Black. And studs.”
