âShit! I slept through my alarm! Shit!â
Darcy bolted upright, taking half the bed covers with her. Steve instinctively clung to his share, his eyes snapping open as she darted around their bedroom to find her clothes. She had thirty minutes tops to get ready, leave, and then open the store. This was exactly why she had troubling sleeping last night. Sheâd tossed and turned for hours until Steve took hold of her and pulled her flush to his chest, kissing her.
Which is why she was trying to find her underwear. She got a new pair from her chest of drawers and shoved them on, grabbing her bra from the tangle of pyjamas at the foot of the bed.
âHow did that even happen?â she groused, rubbing her eyes. âHow?â
She knew how, she just couldnât quite believe it. Steve watched as she gathered up her hair in a haphazard bun, sitting up in bed.
âCan you walk Riley to school?â she asked. âI donât think Iâve got the time now, Iâm so sorryâŚâ
âSure, baby,â he murmured. He put up a hand. âItâs okay, donât apologize.â
She flew back to him, pressing a kiss to his lips. She attempted to pull back just as fast but his hand caught her jaw and he kissed her longer, deepening it. She gave a little groan, hating that she couldnât linger.
âI have to go!â
She tore away, picking up her phone along the way, thankful that at least sheâd remembered to charge it during the night. She collided with Riley, whose hair still looked slept-on and tangled. Her brown eyes widened up at Darcy as they steadied themselves.
âJesus!â
âWhy are you late?â Riley asked.
She chewed a piece of toast, and Darcy noticed she managed to get a little smear of peanut butter on her arm when they ran into each other. She lifted her limb to her mouth, sucking.
Riley followed her down the hall to the kitchen, where Darcy grabbed her apron from the back of a chair. Milk was spilt on the kitchen table, beside a bowl of half eaten cereal.
âI poured my own breakfast!â
âI can see that,â Darcy said. Steve tended to watch his seven year-old daughter tackle things by herself with a wince, and she could picture him walking in soon to find the kitchen in disarray. âCan you get the cloth from the sink and wipe this up, honey?â
âYouâre not walking me to school?â Riley said, pouting.
Darcy shook her head, heart sinking a little at that little face. She leaned down to kiss her forehead.
âIâm late, like you said. I didnât hear my alarm.â
âI did,â Riley said, scrunching her nose.
âUh-huh.â
As Darcy was about to leave, she glanced down at Riley again, frowning. The girlâs red t-shirt was damp in several spots.
âI spilt milk on me, too,â Riley explained. âBut itâs still good.â
Darcy shook her head. âGo change, after you wipe up. Itâs why we do laundry.â
Riley let out an extravagant sigh, throwing her head back. Darcy tried not to encourage her dramatic streak, pressing her lips together so she didnât laugh. She got as far as the front door before she heard:
âBaby!â
She froze, seeing Steve jog into the room, wearing his boxer briefs, Riley trailing behind. He held up a set of keys, and Darcy deflated.
âYou canât open the store without âem,â he whispered, handing them to her.
She grabbed him by the chin and kissed him, making him chuckle. She moved away, aware of Riley as their audience. Steveâs fond smirk had her remembering last night, how sheâd been put to sleep finally with their legs tangled together.
For a second, she considered calling Jane and lying that she was sick, just to go back to bed with him. He was almost too cute, all rumpled and warm, his hair sticking up like Rileyâs, his tattoos all on display.

âI thought youâd turned your accounts private,â Steve said, looking concerned and placing her phone on the end table out of her reach.
âI did, but thought it would be safe to check Tumblr. Thereâs people threatening to unalive themselves or burn all their Captain America gear if you marry me. They all hate me,â she sniffled. âI shouldnât let it get to me, but it does.â
Steve sighed and repositioned himself so she was snuggled against him and wrapped his arm around her. Darcy sighed and laid her head on his shoulder.
âTheyâre just letting their bitterness and jealousy get to them. Block the hell out of them.â
âYou bet I did. I guess no more social media for me until after the wedding,â she sighed. âThough how weâre going to pull that off without the angry mobs coming after me, I donât know.â
âWeâll get through it. Youâre the one I love and I get to spend my life with. Nothing will change that,â Steve reminded her softly, kissing the top of her head. âShall I get the emergency ice cream?â
âYou know me so well, babe,â Darcy sighed fondly. âYes, please. Iâm so grumpy, I donât even care what kind it is.â
âIâll get the big bowls, then,â Steve declared, extricating himself from the sofa and heading to the fridge.
Despite her irritation, Darcy took the opportunity to shamelessly ogle him from behind.
âHate to see you go, love to watch you leave,â she crooned flirtatiously.
Steve chuckled as he dished up two heaping bowls of cookie dough ice cream.
âYouâre ridiculous and I love it,â he responded, presenting her with her cold treat. Darcy gave him a thank you kiss before diving into her favorite comfort food.
Her mood cleared up and for a couple days, things were chill as rumors quieted down, but then an old photograph surfaced of Darcy leaving a bridal boutique and the furor was rekindled. Darcy deleted all social media apps from both of their phones and holed up in her apartment, calling Jane to inform her sheâd have to work remotely for a bit.
The TV was no help either. Steve finally shut it off in disgust.
âIâm calling Natasha,â he finally declared. âThis is out of hand.â
âI thought she was in New Zealand?â Darcy queried, trying not to sound too hopeful. She knew Nat would have useful tips for dealing with the crazy and would be there in a heartbeat if she could.
âGot back night before last,â Steve informed her. âSheâll keep the wolves at bay.â
âThat she will,â Darcy agreed, flipping aimlessly through a bridal magazine. Sheâd long ago found her dress, but she loved looking at all the pretty styles and gleaning useful tips from the articles.
Sighing at a very romantic looking pose, she dog eared the page to add to her photo shoot ideas.
Two days later, Darcy found herself unceremoniously being hauled out to a waiting sports car by Natasha herself.
âAm I being kidnapped? Did I finally piss off Fury enough to have me disappeared?â she queried jokingly.
Natasha only smiled mysteriously.
âYouâll soon find out,â she teased evasively. âI assure you it is a good surprise. Now smile for the paps.â
Darcy blew a kiss to the gathered cameras and smirked as she left them in the dust.
âWhere are we going?â she asked after theyâd left the city well behind.
âGetting you married.â
âWhat?â Darcy spluttered. âNow? I mean, how?â
âI have my ways and several invested friends. Weâre tired of seeing you and Steve so stressed and weâre going to give you a happy day with no paparazzi or snoops.â
âIf you can accomplish that, my friend, you really are a miracle worker,â Darcy said, with a half sigh, half groan. âItâs a good thing I love that man as much as I do.â
âThe fact that youâre not protesting speaks volumes,â Natasha observed. âAnd if I overstep in any way, please tell me.â
âYou know I trust you, Nat,â Darcy assured her. âI bet you got me time off, packed my bags and my gown, and probably booked the officiant as well.â
âPretty much.â
Darcy laughed and leaned back in the seat. A lot of decisions had just been taken out of her hands and for once she wasnât mad about it.
Steve, meanwhile, was huddled in the backseat of an SUV being lovingly lectured by his friends.
âYou should have said something sooner,â Bucky chided him. âWe could have had this well in hand weeks ago.â
âYeah,â Clint agreed from the driverâs seat. âI wish Iâd paid more attention. I didnât realize the press was hounding her so bad, the jackasses.â
âYou guys have much bigger issues to deal with,â Steve protested. âI thought Darcy and I could handle it.â
Bucky gave him the stink eye and Sam sighed.
âThe point is, Steve, you shouldnât have to handle invasion of privacy and personal attacks. Itâs not okay,â Sam told him. âCalling Nat was the right call. Weâll get you hitched in peace and quiet.â
The destination turned out to be a mansion in upstate New York with very tight security. Darcyâs eyes boggled as they drove through the gates.
âWhat kind of strings did you pull, Nat?â she asked in wonder, staring at the magnificent building.
âNever you mind,â Natasha replied. âLetâs just say someone owed me. Thereâs plenty of good options for either an indoor or outdoor ceremony. Weâll give you the grand tour tonight and have you saying I Do tomorrow. Then weâll leave you alone to enjoy honeymoon bliss the rest of the week.â
âI like that plan!â Darcy agreed, cheerfully.
The two vehicles pulled up in front of the mansion and Steve and Darcy were handed their suitcases and ordered inside while their friends unloaded the other luggage. They gaped open- mouthed at the grandeur inside.
âThat staircase is really something,â Steve admired. âThe chandelier!â Darcy breathed in wonder. âI feel like Iâm in the American version of Downton Abbey.â
âYeah. Whereâs Carson?â Steve joked with a chuckle.
Presently, Natasha swept in carrying the bag that contained Darcyâs dress.
âFollow me,â she ordered, âyou too, Steve.â
Natasha assigned them to separate bedrooms, much to Darcyâs dismay, but assured her it was just for the one night, per tradition.
âIâll be right next door,â Jane assured her. âWe could turn this into a slumber party!â
Eyeing the gigantic four poster bed, Darcy certainly saw the potential.
Natasha hung up Darcyâs wedding dress in the spacious wardrobe and added another dress beside it.
âI brought your red dress along for dinner tonight, she informed her. âItâs a dressy occasion.â
Darcy just nodded, deciding to just roll with it.
The grand tour was one jaw dropping sight after another and Steve and Darcy decided that the lawn behind the mansion was perfect for a ceremony setting. It faced a beautiful row of pools and landscaped hedges that stretched out as far as the eye could see. The forecast looked good, but in case of inclement weather, they agreed on the enclosed porch for a backup.
Steve and Darcy lingered on the lawn, relishing the view and the peace. Darcy thought he looked more relaxed than sheâd ever seen him. Steve was glad to see the tense lines and constant wariness erased from Darcyâs expression. She hadnât deserved all the stress being with him had caused, but he was so grateful for her.
âIâm sorry I let it get to this, Darcy,â he sighed, holding her close. âYou could have walked away from all the drama and I wouldnât have blamed you.â
âIâm too stubborn to quit on us and I love you too damn much,â Darcy replied, looking up at him contentedly. âI wonât gonna lie, itâs been awful, but weâre worth it.â
âYes, we are,â Steve agreed, kissing the top of her head. He loved how perfectly they fit together. âWe have the best friends, donât we?â
âMost of the time, yeah,â Darcy agreed.
Dinner was a happy affair and everyone looked incredibly gorgeous in their dressed up state. Natasha thought Darcy was positively glowing as she laughed and playfully argued with Clint about who had won an age old bet. Bucky eyed the bride and groom to be with a great deal of fondness and just a touch of wistfulness.
âI want what they have, donât you?â he murmured to his table neighbor, Wanda.
âYes,â Wanda sighed, smiling pensively. âThey are so good for each other and so loyal through everything. That is a relationship to strive for.â
After dinner they went outside and stargazed while reminiscing about various escapades. Darcy and Steve shared the story of their meet cute again and the men took the opportunity to lovingly roast Steve.
Darcy went to bed after a very satisfying goodnight kiss, giddy at the thought that tomorrow she would be Mrs. Rogers.
Jane woke her with giddy impatience.
âWake up! Itâs your wedding day!â
âAhhh!!â Darcy squealed, when sheâd fully come to her senses. âItâs happening! Itâs actually happening!!â
They clutched each other in an exuberant hug.
Natasha and Wanda joined them for a cozy ladies only breakfast, (Steve had been forbidden to see her before the ceremony), then they chilled out on the balcony for a while, champagne in hand.
They helped each other out with hair and makeup and Darcy could only stare in amazement at herself in the mirror as Natasha put the finishing touches on her updo.
âWow! I look like a princess!â Darcy remarked, awestruck. âNat, youâre a wizard. I should feel bad that my momâs not here, but I canât. Sheâd be throwing out the backhanded compliments like candy. Another benefit of eloping, I guess.â
âTruth,â Jane agreed. âTheyâll have to settle for watching the video and pictures.â
âYou got a photographer on this short notice?â Darcy asked, eyebrow lifting in surprise. âThatâs quite a feat.â
âSheâs pretty new to the business, but very talented,â Jane told her. âAs soon as Natasha told me the plan, I called her: My wedding gift to you and Steve.â
âJane. ThatâsâŚâŚso sweetâŚ.I might just cry,â Darcy batted away tears and Wanda shook her head.
âNo weeping and spoiling makeup yet, Darcy,â she commanded her. âLetâs get you into that beautiful dressâŚ.â
Everybody sighed in unison when Darcy unzipped the garment bag and revealed her beautiful gown. The strapless A-line design was covered with intricate beadwork on the bodice and lacy details on the skirt hem.
âSteveâs brain is gonna explode when he sees you,â Wanda commented, as they helped her into the dress.
âNot literally, I hope,â Darcy quipped. âI want him to live for our wedding night.â
She wiggled her eyebrows in a way that made Natasha chuckle and Jane wave her finger in playful rebuke.
Steve was sketching while he waited for his summons on the back balcony overlooking the garden. He hadnât had this good of a view in a long time and his pencil flew across the paper as he drew. He supposed he should be feeling nervous, but he wasnât. The flutters in his stomach were sheer excitement at finally marrying the woman he loved, a dream heâd thought long since died. But then Darcy had crashed into his life, quite literally, and nothing had been the same.
He felt a cool hand on his shoulder and Bucky spoke up.
âNice to see you drawing again, punk,â he said. âCalming the nerves?â
Steve shook his head.
âIâm distracting myself from breaking Natâs rule and running to see Darcy. I canât wait. Are you and Sam behaving?â
âUs? Misbehave? Whereâd you ever get that notion?â Bucky asked, feigning shock. Steve just chuckled.
âOnly whenever youâre left alone for more than five minutes,â he retorted. âKinda like me getting into fights, only now the tables have turned.â
Bucky shrugged sheepishly.
âYouâve got me there.â
A figure joined them a few minutes later and both men stared as they took in Natasha, looking beautiful in her light aqua bridesmaids dress, red hair curled and spilling down her back. Steve saw Bucky swallow hard.
âFifteen minutes, gentlemen,â she told them, returning their admiring glances, her eyes lingering on Bucky. âDamn. You clean up good, boys.â
âSo do you,â Bucky replied in a strangled sounding voice.
Steve grinned. He couldnât wait to help these two get a clue.
âYouâve got it bad, Buck,â Steve observed sympathetically after Natasha had disappeared.
âNoâŚ..aw, hell.â Bucky muttered, unable to lie to his best friend. âBut She thinks loveâs for children. Whatâs the point?â
Steve sighed.
âThe point is, sheâs had everyone she cared about ripped away and The Red Room philosophies were deeply ingrained in her. Believe it or not, I havenât heard her utter those words in nearly two years. And clearly, she now believes in love enough to make sure I didnât screw things up with Darcy and then gave us thisâŚ..â he gestured toward their surroundings as he flipped his notebook closed and stood up. âYouâre about to witness firsthand how taking a chance is absolutely worth it. And this is coming from someone whoâs known to be hopeless with women.â
Steve grinned at Bucky, who smiled knowingly back and stood to give him a man hug.
âI wouldnât miss this miraculous moment for the world,â Bucky declared, with another affectionate thump on the back. âNow letâs go get you married.â
There were no decorations or aisle runners or musical accompaniments, but Darcy found herself not missing any of it. She simply waited until sheâd seen the bridesmaids and groomsmen line up in front of the officiantâwas that Agent IPod Thief?âand strolled outside to join them, escorted by Clint. (Thor was sadly unavailable, being busy with Asgardian stuff, but heâd sent Darcy a very congratulatory text message in all capital letters).
The sun was shining, the birds were chirping, and Steve was looking at her like she was his entire world. The harassment that sheâd been dealing with from social media and the press faded away in the reality of their happiness.
The jealous bitches can suck it! she thought gleefully.
Agent Coulson (How was he not dead?) looked exceedingly pleased to be overseeing the wedding of his childhood idol. It was kind of cute, Darcy observed vaguely, before Steve distracted her by winking flirtatiously at her.
âYes, I do take this fine specimen of man to be my husband,â she proclaimed, when prompted. Steveâs ears reddened and Sam snickered.
ââŚ..to love, honor, and cherish, for better for worse, for richer for poorer, through alien attacks and allergy attacks, through portals and peril, through midnight snacks and cuddles, until death do us part.â
âAwwwwwâŚ.â Wanda sighed.
Steve squeezed Darcyâs hands, looking like he wanted to kiss her right then and there.
âI take this amazing, beautiful, fearless woman to be my wife, to love, honor, and cherish in sickness and in health, through alien attacks and allergy attacks, through tasers and tesseracts, through slow dances and silliness, until death do us part.â
Theyâd gone off script, but clearly their friends appreciated it and applauded their ad-libbing.
âThat was impressive,â Bucky murmured, as he handed Steve Darcyâs ring.
She gave him another one of those glowy smiles as he slipped it on her finger. He couldnât get over how beautiful she was and how lucky he was.
Darcy slid Steveâs ring on with a dramatic flourish and then they were pronounced husband and wife and he was kissing her exuberantly.
Everyone cheered.
Afterward, as they meandered through the gardens, hand in hand, Darcy told him, âToday was a fairytale. This was so much better than the big shindig I used to imagine.â
âYouâre not upset about not having the big party we talked about?â he asked, fingering one of the dangling curls by her cheek.
âNo,â she told him. âIt felt so right. So us.â
âIt did,â he agreed. âYou look completely radiant, Mrs. Rogers.â
Darcy flushed at his warm words.
âIf you keep using that tone with me Iâm not gonna be able to control myself,â she playfully warned, running her hand up his chest. Steve in a tux was a very impressive sight and she felt a strong urge to climb him like a tree.
âIâve dreamed of this ever since I crashed into you in the hallway that first time,â she admitted, feeling his heartbeat beneath her fingers.
âGroping me or marrying me?â he asked in amusement.
âYes,â she answered mischievously, making her new husband laugh and then kiss her again. When sheâd finally regained her senses afterwards, she saw a very pleasing sight.
âOh, look, babe, looks like Buckyâs getting cozy with Nat over there.â
Steve followed her gaze to see Bucky walking alongside Natasha very closely. He said something that made her throw back her head and laugh in a way that she very rarely did.
âNow thatâs what I like to see,â he murmured.
âRight?â Darcy exclaimed. âI ship it so hard! They deserve it so much.â
âThey do,â Steve agreed. âI hope they realize that. She spent so much time trying to find me a wife and now the shoeâs gonna be on the other foot.â
He rubbed his hands together, very ready to help the BuckyNat ship sail.
âFirst order of business when we get back from our honeymoon,â Darcy declared. âIn the meantime, how about we sneak inside and find a handy closet where I can ravish you?â
âMuch as I like that idea, youâd better make sure youâre done with pictures first, because when I get through with youâŚ..â Steve playfully threatened, dropping his voice intentionally. Darcy gulped.
âRight. Good point. Excellent point,â she rambled, fanning herself. âWe should probably quickly round up everyone for a group picture. Iâll go get Jane.â
She picked up her skirts and scurried off, leaving Steve to smirk after her and then head to round up his friends. This newlywed thing was going to be fun, he thought.

A/n: I had a revelation about where I pulled the title of this fic from today as I was writing this, thanks to something my best friend sent me. All coincidentally, mind you - she has no idea of this story as far as I know (she's not in the fandom). It's a good and amazing revelation, one that will make this fic even better. I canât wait to get to working that into this story. *bounces in happiness*

Exposure therapy. Or thatâs what itâs allegedly called. To put himself in situations where heâs uncomfortable to try and figure out how to cope with them instead of being wholly disabled.
Whatever. Heâs not even sure if thatâs the right term for whatâs going through his head.
No matter what, Steve still doesnât like the sound of fireworks and is working to actively avoid them, even if theyâre a major part of the combined birthday/4th of July party happening at the Compound right then.
Besides, itâs his birthday, and if he wants to spend the last half of his party relaxing on a giant float thatâs been engineered to handle his weight in the Compoundâs indoor pool avoiding raucous partygoers, so be it. Itâs calm, and the gentle rocking of the water makes him drowsy, head tilting back against the inflatable pillow.
Another sound begins to rise above the movement of the water, bare feet padding along the bright white tiles surrounding the pool. And itâs a cadence Steve recognizes all too well, as a gentle smile spread across his face.
âYou know, of all the places for you to hide and avoid your birthday party, on a pool floatie is the last place I would have thought of,â Darcy calls out. Steve hears a soft splash, her feet beginning to descend the stairs into the water.
âItâs soundproof,â Steve calls back, waving a hand at the skylights above that provide an expansive view of the night sky. âYou can see the fireworks from here, but you canât hear a single pop.â
âAhh, suddenly it all makes sense.â The splashes grow closer, and Darcy paddles around the side of the float, coming into view. Sheâs got on a simple black tank bathing suit, hair a combination of slicked down and puffy frizz from the water thatâs been splashed into it, and she looks absolutely delightful to Steve. âHi,â she says as she props her arms and her chin on the side of the float.
âHi.â
âFeeling better out here?â
âMuch. Itâs peaceful.â
âThatâs an understatement. Thor, Clint, and Bucky are attempting feats of strength outside. Samâs got the camera.â
âCanât wait to see that tomorrow morning,â Steve grins. âWanna come up here?â he asks.
âYes, please.â
Itâs not exactly graceful, more like a mild comedy routine, but between the two of them they manage to get Darcy onto the float and she curls up against Steve, all slick, damp skin that warms up against his. âHow are you so warm?â she mutters, draping her bare legs over his to soak up as much heat as she can.
He drops an arm around her shoulders, pulling her in even closer. âItâs the serum. The higher metabolism makes me run hotter.â
Darcy glances up at him, lips pursed into the slightest frown. ââŚthatâs a decidedly unromantic answer.â
Steve just laughs. âHow aboutâŚcursed by one of the fairy folk to always have fire in my blood? That sounds like something my ma would have said.â
She nods firmly, giving a smacking kiss to the pectoral nearest her. âI like it.â
Above them, the sky turns green and blue and gold from a silent firework going off beyond the skylights, turning the dim lighting in the pool room into a shower of multicolored stars that float around them. Itâs something thatâs near magical, and with what Steveâs world has become, heâs a little more inclined to believe in magic these days than he ever was.
âHappy birthday, Steve,â Darcy whispers against his skin, âI love you so much.â
âLove you too,â Steve replies, as more fireworks light up the sky.

I really should put these ficlets into some sort of order and get them posted to AO3, shouldn't I?
*
âI canât believe youâre taking me to Staten fucking Island for a date.â
âNo, I took you to Brooklyn for a date, weâre making a quick stop for dessert before heading back to the compound. Besides, you said you liked Italian ice; this place supposedly has some of the best around.â
Darcy just rolls her eyes bemusedly as she hops out of the passenger seat of the inconspicuous black SUV. Steve shuts the door behind her and they begin to walk down the street to where the Italian ice place of legend is. He slings an arm around her shoulders and pulls her close, providing a little bit of extra warmth in the chill of the fall evening.
The place is surprisingly crowded, people waiting on various lines inching towards the ordering counter. Steve tugs his baseball cap just a little bit lower and makes sure that the lensless glasses are still on his face. Darcy privately thinks itâs the dumbest disguise ever, but it seems to work better than imagined. But also, maybe itâs because people donât expect to see someone as famous and well known as Captain America doing something as normal as going out to dinner or getting some ice cream. Which is both a curse and a blessing in itself.
Still, Darcy notices a couple of sly glances tossed their way that sheâs not quite sure what to make of. So she just stays curled into Steveâs side as they wait their turn.
This being New York (even if they are in a part that Darcy would barely consider a part of the city) however, no one says anything and soon enough theyâre walking back to the car, icy cold treats in hand. She licks at the ice, orange creamsicle flavors melting on her tongue, cold and creamy and a nice little kick of nostalgia. For just a moment, sheâs a child on the boardwalk with her parents, tucking into some Italian ice after spending a long day baking on the beach, getting sand in every crevice and her hair tangled from salt water.
Maybe next summer she can take Steve to the beach also. He needs a vacation more than anyone she knows.
Thereâs a soft noise next to her, and she sees Steve looking down at her, a soft smile on his face, pink lips made even redder from the cherry ice heâs been eating. âWhat are you thinking?â he asks.
âIâm thinking I want to, when itâs warmer out, show you the beach where I grew up. And we can just spend a day there being lazy and warm and thereâs nothing more important than the water in front of us and the sun in the sky.â Fanciful, yes, but thatâs her deepest secret, after all.Â
That for all her feelings about soulmates being an entire and utter racket, Darcy Lewis is still a romantic at heart.
âIn the summer then,â Steve nods. âWeâll make a tradition out of it.â Thereâs a little flush on his cheeks, just barely visible under the yellow glow of a street light, but itâs the same shade as the cherry on his lips.
âIn the summer,â Darcy agrees, grinning. âIn the meantime - itâs a Friday night. Neither one of us is working tomorrow. We donât really need to rush back to the compound, do we?â
Steve shakes his head slowly. âNo, no rush at all,â he smirks.
When he bends down to kiss her, he tastes like cherries.

âJane, come on, you have to go!â
âNope.â Jane canât meet her eyes as she speaks, so Darcyâs unsure if sheâs just offering up an excuse to get out of the Stark sponsored fundraiser or is actually so entrenched in science that nothing else matters. âThereâs a celestial event that night that Iâll need to get readings on.â
âA celestial event? Really?â
âYes.â Jane waves a hand. âYou go, represent us. Go as Thorâs date for the night.â
âI hate fancy fundraisers.â
âSo do I, but one of us has to go, and itâs not going to be me.â
*
The fundraiserâs down in the city, at a museum filled with antiquities and people who are rich enough to probably be able to keep all of these artifacts hidden away in private collections, which serves to make Darcy feel supremely uncomfortable. Still, it is fun to arrive at the party on Thorâs arm while wearing a slinky evening gown.
(Steve gives her an appreciative look and a wink from across the room. Theyâre not ready for their relationship to be that public yet, exposed to the critical eyes of the paparazzi and the rest of the world, so for tonight theyâll have to be content with longing glances. Until later, at least, when heâll be stripping this slinky gown off of her.)
Still thoughâŚthis isnât Darcyâs world, and she feels it in every bone of her body. Itâs a fight to not mouth off to the people that Thorâs trying to schmooze for charitable donations - they should use their excessive money to help people without needing to be hardcore convinced to do so by a goddamn alien prince she firmly believes. So eventually, she wanders off into the halls of antiquities, preferring the quiet of the objects to soothe the grumpiness thatâs taken up in her mind.
The one object that really catches her eye is a decoration that was from atop a shared tomb, possibly Mesopotamian or Sumerian although the curators make a specific note to say that they are unclear of exactly which culture it came from, a stone plaque showing entwined hands, and each hand has half of a stylized sun design on it. The hands are joined together so that the halves of the sun become a seamless whole.
ââBelieved to be one of the oldest depictions of shared soulmate marksâ,â Darcy reads off of the card attached to the plinth. She gives the plaque a pursed lip, unamused look, because it seems like everything in her life these days leads back to soulmate issues and just how much importance civilization seems to put on them.
âIt is a funny thing, is it not?â Thor says from somewhere behind her, âthis whole importance of finding your one and only.â
âYouâre telling me,â Darcy concedes with a tilt of her head, as Thor comes up to stand next to her, joining her in staring at the stone plaque.Â
Thor sips at the cut crystal tumbler in his hand, which is no doubt enhanced with Asgardian liquor from the flask that he always carries to these events. Darcy canât blame him for that, because she could use some enhancement herself right now. âIt seems to be a very Earthbound conceit as well. I canât think of any other realm that has the concept of soulmates.â
âSo Iâd fit in perfectly on Vanaheim then.â She nods, crossing her arms over her chest. âMaybe I can say Iâm an alien next time anyone asks why I donât have a soulmate.â
âThat is an option. Or you could just say that the relationship you choose and put the effort into making work is just as valid as being predestined to have a soulmate. I think your Captain would agree with that too,â Thor finishes with a flourish, raising his glass to his lips as he gives Darcy a smirk.
She grins back. âYeah, he would.âÂ
A thought flashes across Darcyâs mind, and she turns to Thor with confusion in her eyes. âHold up a second though - you were born with a soulmark too, the one you share with Jane. But earthlings are the only ones who believe in soulmates?â
Thor flushes slightly, the blush coloring his cheeks right above his beard. âYes, wellâŚuntil I met Jane everyone thought I just had a rather amusing birthmark.â
Darcy bursts out laughing, the joyful sound echoing throughout the gallery.
ICYMI, there was fear that companies were scraping public AO3 fics to train their AI without the consent of AO3 or its users. That fear has been confirmed.
AO3 has written about what theyâre doing (and what theyâre not able to do), and they recommend restricting your work to AO3 registered users only. [Instructions here]
This gross misuse of the archive by techbros is why Iâve locked down my fics for the foreseeable future. I recommend the rest of you do the same.
Someone recently messaged me worried Iâd deleted all my fic - itâs all still there, itâs just locked to A03 because of this and other skimming instances.

Every soulmark is entirely unique and private, Darcy knows. Itâs how soulmates can recognize each other, even if what that relationship is isnât fully formed at that time.
Though, to be fair, Darcy hasnât paid too much attention to all the finer details of soulmarks over her life. As one of the rare unmarked population, sheâs tried to stay away from the complexities of having a soulmark. Fear of wanting something sheâd never have? Maybe, but it also feels like a âwhy bother paying attention to something that will never affect meâ sort of a moment.
Steveâs soulmark is fascinating to her though, Darcy will admit. Itâs an angular and sculptural mark thatâs settled on his ribcage, nestled among the pale, freckled skin and muscles that sheâs lucky enough to get to see in those private moments when itâs just the two of them. She traces her fingers over the lines as he sleeps soundly in her bed, a small comfort that tells her heâs home and safe from this latest mission.
Itâs not her mark, but itâs something precious to Steve, a sign of the best friend heâs ever had in his life, and that makes it something Darcy loves about him. She hasnât seen Buckyâs mark yet, but she imagines itâs a mirror image of the one Steve has.
Admittedly, it does bring to mind those silly, made for TV movies where the heroineâs former partner, the unmarked one sheâd settled for until she has a meet cute with her soulmate, gets irrationally jealous and left in the dust because the heroine is convinced that the marked person sheâs known for all of three days will be her perfect romantic match. Darcyâs not generally a jealous person, but also, sheâs not that silly brained. She understands friendship and how important those people are to anyoneâs life too. Hell, Jane is absolutely her own platonic soul sister, marks be damned.
And Steve absolutely and entirely holds her heart in his hands.
Darcy is surprisingly all right with this.
Steve shifts in his sleep, mutters something unintelligible under his breath, but then settles back into the pillows with a heavy sigh. Darcy just smiles to herself, rests her hand over his soulmark, and places a soft kiss on another patch of the light freckles that decorate his bare shoulder.
Still deeply asleep, Steve grabs her hand that covers his soulmark and tangles his fingers with hers, pulling it closer to his heart.
You Did Not Just Say That: A Shieldshock Meet Cute
Steve was having dinner with Bucky and Sam to celebrate the end of a long mission and enjoy having real food again. The burgers were beyond delicious and Steve felt incredibly relaxed in the cozy environment, where the waitresses had his order memorized and called everyone âhoneyâ.
Bucky and San were alternately playfully bickering and analyzing the people at the tables near them. Steve was half listening and sometimes interjecting a comment.
âThat looks like an awkward first date,â Sam observed, nodding at a table nearby where a man and woman were stiffly eating.
âVery awkward,â Bucky agreed sympathetically. l
The man spent most of his time looking at his phone and the stunning brunette he was with was clearly trying to keep conversation going. In Steveâs opinion, the dude was an idiot.
When his slice of apple pie arrived, warm and gooey with ice cream on top, he forgot about them for a few minutes while he relished the deliciousness of his favorite dessert.
Sam and Bucky had teased him about being a stereotype, but he didnât care. It was worth it.
âOh, you did not just say that!â
He glanced up to see the brunette was now glaring daggers at her dinner companion.
âListen here, Mike. Iâve seen and heard all I need to know. Youâre a sexist jerk. Peggy would rise from her grave to punch you if she heard you talking that bullshit. She saved the country from Nazis multiple times and stood up to creeps like you who want to keep women in âtheir placeâ. Go back to your cave, Neanderthal. Peggy freaking Carter deserves respect and if all you can see are her boobs, clearly youâre not going to see beyond mine. Be glad I donât have my taser with me because that comment deserved it. Donât call me again.â
The angry looking brunette stalked away without a backwards glance ignoring Mikeâs call of âDarcy, waitâŚâ
Steve had listened to her rant with stunned admiration, noting the fire in her eyes and the pointed emphasis on the word Neanderthal.
âWhat did he say?â he asked Bucky.
âIâm not gonna tell you, because I donât want you getting kicked out of here for assault,â he said, shooting Mike a look of disgust. âIt was beyond gross, though. I canât say Iâm not tempted to menace him a little.â He cracked his knuckles and grinned fiendishly.
âHeâs not worth it,â Steve declared. âIâll be right back.â
He slipped out of the booth and headed in the direction Darcy had taken. She was sitting just outside the door on a bench muttering under her breath.
âMaâam? Are you okay?â He asked, hoping she wouldnât think he was being creepy.
Darcy turned around and looked up at him, blue eyes going wide as she recognized him.
âOh, Wow. Oh.â she managed. âDid you hear that?â
âI caught the gist of it. I didnât mean to overhear, but I couldnât help but appreciate what you said to him.â
Darcyâs cheeks turned pink.
âI was just telling the truth. Peggy was one of my heroes.â
âMine too,â Steve said. âShe would definitely approve of you. She didnât stand for bullies and sexists. Mind if I sit down?â
âIt would be unpatriotic of me to refuse,â Darcy said, eyes twinkling at him behind her glasses. They were a very, very pretty shade of blue, he noticed. âSteve Rogers, I presume?â
âIn the flesh,â he confirmed as he sat down.
âIâm Darcy Lewisâwell, Dr. Darcy Lewis to be precise. Newly minted Astrophysicist and former scientist wrangler.â
âAh. Thorâs lightning sister,â Steve remarked, recognition sparking. âHeâs very proud of you and actually bragged about being tazed by you.â
Darcy chuckled. âHe would. So what brings Captain America to Nancyâs diner?â
âThe food is the best,â Steve replied decisively. âItâs our post mission wind down dinner tradition. Plus, Nancy loves to fuss over us like weâre her kids.â
âShe sure does,â Darcy agreed fondly. âHer boys are all grown and she loves being a mother hen to her regulars.â
Steve took a quick glance back through the window to see Bucky and Sam looming over a scared looking Mike, who nodded and pulled out his wallet. Soon after, he left the diner at a trot, not looking back.
âThank goodness heâs gone,â Darcy said, breathing a sigh of relief. âNancy must have put the fear of God into him.â
Steve smiled.
âIt wasnât just Nancy.â He told her.
Bucky and Sam emerged, smiling cheerily. Darcyâs jaw dropped.
âI bet he wet his pants,â she remarked finally, then giggled.
Steve introduced her, but Bucky and Sam, being the good bros they were, made their exits after a few minutes, winking at Steve.
âWhatâs it like being friends with them?â She queried playfully.
âNever a dull moment,â Steve answered with fond exasperation as Sam and Bucky fought over who was driving.
He turned his gaze back to Darcy.
âRight now, Iâm more interested in finding out what it would be like being friends with you.â
Darcyâs mouth opened and closed again and a playful smile bloomed over her face.
âAre you sure you want more trouble in your life, Rogers?â She asked. âBecause I tend to attract it.â
âIâm very partial to your kind of trouble,â he told her with a wink and a grin that made Darcy forget all about her disastrous date.
âYouâve got that dumbstruck smile again, Darcy,â Jane pointed out to her friend as they sipped their coffee. âI canât believe you still havenât talked to him.â
Darcy just shrugged, eyes following the broad back of Steve Rogers as he exited the little cafe.
âItâs very unlike me, I know,â Darcy admitted. âBut I donât wanna ruin this fun littleâŚâŚ.thing. Hitting on Captain America is a bit different than some random cute dude.â
âHow so? Steveâs just a normal guy and youâd find that out for yourself if youâd just talk to him.â Jane sighed.
Darcy snorted. âNormal? Him?â
Sheâd been exchanging non-verbal greetings with Steve for a couple months now since theyâd moved into Avengers tower. Heâd smile and wave at her whenever theyâd pass each other in the hall or share an elevator. Darcy would return the smile, always feeling very giddy from the beauty of it. She hadnât got up the courage to say anything yet, which annoyed Jane greatly.
âWell, just be glad Romanoffâs away or she would see your eye fucking and deal with you two idiots posthaste.â
âItâs not eye fucking, Jane! Heâd probably die of horror at the thought.â
Jane just gave a mysterious smile. âI wouldnât be too sure about that.â
âAre you coming with me to the Princess Bride screening tomorrow?â Darcy asked to change the topic. It was her favorite movie and she was very hyped to see it on a big screen.
âSadly, no,â Jane answered regretfully. âIâve got a very important meeting that Fury wonât let me miss.â
âUgh.â Darcy wrinkled her nose. âMy sympathies.â
The following day, she entered the theater armed with a giant bowl of popcorn and a couple boxes of Resees Pieces. It was midday on a Tuesday, so the place was pretty much empty, which Darcy loved. She didnât have to worry about judgmental stares from old people or being tripped over by kids taking a half dozen potty breaks.
During the second trailer, she heard someone approach her row and looked up to see Steve Rogers sit down four seats away from her. He gave her a delighted smile and she instinctively waved back, even as her stomach did somersaults.
âWho are you trying to fool, Lewis?â She heard Natashaâs voice in her head. âYouâve got it bad.â
As the movie progressed, she glanced over periodically to gauge Steveâs reaction, which indicated he hadnât seen the movie before, but was heartily enjoying it. He seemed especially tickled by the iocane powder scene and the Rodents Of Unusual Size.
Darcy heaved a happy sigh as the credits rolled, munching the last of her candy contentedly. Her neighbor was marking something down in a small notebook.
âI waited way too long to watch that movie,â she heard Steve say as he pocketed the notebook. âThat was fantastic.â
âI know, right?â Darcy exclaimed, forgetting her shyness around him. âIâve seen it fifteen times now and it never gets old.â
âIâll have to catch it again, sometime.â Steve remarked, then he looked more closely at her and did a double take.
âWaitâyouâre the one Iâve been seeing around the tower lately with Dr. Foster. Iâm Steve Rogers.â
He held out a large hand and Darcy shook it happily.
âWow. Iâm Darcy Lewis, and I was wanting to say something before, but your face left me tongue-tied.â
Steve chuckled.
âWell, your face left me equally tongue-tied.â
Darcyâs face grew warm and she decided to go for it.
âHmm. Natasha would shake her head at how much time weâve wasted. Wanna get a late lunch?â
âAbsolutely,â Steve agreed, giving another bashful smile. âAnd yes, if sheâd been here, she probably would have locked us in a closet right now. Sheâs threatened to make me a Tinder profile when she gets back next week.â
âOh, no.â Darcy shuddered at the thought. âThatâs like throwing a lamb to the wolves! What was she thinking?â
Steve snorted at her simile and sighed.
âShe was tired of me dragging my heels about dating again and said I was starting to resemble a sad sheepdog and needed to get a life.â
Darcy chuckled as they left the theater together.
âWell, sheâs gonna be in for a nice surprise, then. Though I always thought you were the golden retriever type. Now, follow me, Steve, and I will introduce you to the best burger youâve ever tasted.â
âAs you wish,â Steve replied with a grin.
The burger was indeed very good, but Steve was far more interested in Darcy Lewis and her delightful conversation. As for Darcy, she found that a relaxed off duty Steve was a very normal person like Jane had said and very fun to be around.
Needless to say, when Natasha Romanoff returned a few days later, she was pleased to catch Steve and Darcy shamelessly flirting in the hallway.
âThereâs hope for him after all.â she declared.
Hoping maybe you can help with am old SheildShock story were Nat, Bucky, Tony and Dr. Susan Cho got deaged and Darcy and Steve had to watch over them. I remember Susan was dating Sam as an adult and called him Cookie Butt. And that Darcy and Steve took them all to Disneyland. Can't seem to find it and I fear its been deleted đ˘
This? It sounded like an Emma98 story to me, so I'm smiling my way through her stuff on Ao3 now. :)
Darcy, I Shrunk the Avengers

What happened to @wahwahwaffles while I was off Tumblr/Ao3?
I'm not sure if this is the right place, but I've been looking for a particular fix and it's driving me nuts!
It's an infinity war follow up where Darcy has some portal making powers, and in the final battle she's the only causality, making Steve into an recluse in one of the poles?
Do you happen to know it?
I'd guess that is "Of Strings and Theories and Trampolines" by ClasseySpanks at Ao3.

Weekly Prompt: it's breakfast week at the @darcylewisbingohq!
Pairing: Darcy Lewis/Steve Rogers
Rating: G
Tags/Warnings: soulmates AU
Summary: In a world where having a soulmate mark is the norm for most people, Darcy Lewis is one of the rare few unmarked people. Of course, this doesnât stop her from finding the right partner.Â
Part one can be found here (though you donât need to read it to understand this).
*
The topic of soulmates comes up again about six months into dating, in a roundabout sort of way curled up on the couch watching some cheesy and silly movie while pretending the rest of the world doesnât exist (it had been a long couple of weeks, what with saving the world tasks for Steve involving a suspect alien goo while Darcy was making sure Jane didnât accidentally go full on supervillain and get the world sucked into a black hole).
âThis isâŚinteresting,â Steve says, squinting in the direction of the finest schlock that Hallmark Movies has to offer currently blaring on the television.Â
âCome on, you canât tell me that there werenât terribly sappy and unrealistic romance stories around when you were young. It may be a different time, but I canât imagine people were all that different.â Darcy shifts so sheâs curled against Steveâs side, a bowl of popcorn cradled in her curled up legs. He drapes his arm around her and pulls her close.
âPeople have always been people,â Steve murmurs. âSo Iâm sure there were, even if I didnât see them.â
âToo busy sneaking into Dodgers games?â
âI can neither confirm nor deny any stories of alleged mischief from my youth.â
âUh huh.â
A few minutes later the soulmates meet in the movie, complete with sparkly lens flares and what sounds like it could be a minuscule bird choir chirping in the background, and itâs impossible to miss the wince on Darcyâs face. âIt never happens like that in real life. I was there when Jane and Thor met, she hit him with her truck. Twice.â She pauses, and stuffs another fist full of popcorn in her mouth. âMaybe Iâm the one who lives in a movie,â she mumbles.
âWhen Bucky and I met, there definitely werenât any sparkles. More like fists flying and plenty of black eyes to go around.âÂ
âMore youthful mischief?â
âMmm, more like self defense.â
âPeople are people, which means thereâs also always going to be bullies too.âÂ
âYeah.â Steve looks down at Darcy, hoping she can see the sly grin thatâs crossing his face. âAnd then thereâs how I met you.â
âNot your soulmate though,â she canât help but point out. Itâs a bad habit by now, even if Darcy doesnât want to admit that out loud.
âYou took me down to the canteen back at the compound and made me breakfast for dinner because you thought my shield looked sad.â
Darcy shrugs, burrowing deeper into Steveâs side and soaking in even more of his warmth. âWell, you had just gotten back from a trash heap of a mission, going by what Thor had said. You looked like you needed a bit of a pick me up and thereâs nothing better than pancakes and bacon to do that.â
âIt was exactly what I needed.â He leans over and presses a kiss to the top of Darcyâs head, sheâs the perfect size for him to be able to do that. âItâs too bad the rest of the team had to crash our breakfast for dinner party.â
Darcy snorts, entirely unladylike and Steve absolutely loves the sound of it. âDefinitely too bad. If they hadnât shown up I may have laid you out on the table and had you for breakfast instead.â
