BRIEF BACKGROUND

originally born in california, shelly was raised by a single mom, diana, when she was a teenager, her father was in and out of her life for the first three years, then dropped off the map 

her mom is a very charming woman, and as such, there were a variety of partners in and out of her mom’s life, they were not all good, they were not all kind, and quite often the fallout of one of these relationships ending meant they had to move and start over, they didn’t have a lot of family or a lot of stuff so it was easy to pack up and relocate

this is how she ended up in new york! 

shelly was a bit of a latchkey kid, diana worked often to make ends meet, so shelly often had to fight for herself or often found trouble with the few others her age in their apartment complex 

she’s always been a bit outspoken, a bit rebellious, a bit disappointing, but once she hit her teens, she was really beginning to act out -- she learned how to sneak out, fell into the skater crowd, was usually getting stoned with her core group or learning tricks at the skate park 

also had a plethora of odd jobs to help out around the house, although she was not a very good employee! 

she did not excel in school, it’s not that she isn’t smart, but she had difficulty focusing or motivating herself, and it wasn’t like she had many people in her corner, she nearly flunked out but scraped by the skin of her teeth

her mom eventually marries, to an actual nice guy this time, and they end up having another child, shelly’s half sister, lily, who shelly absolutely adores, she’s nearly four now! she was born mostly deaf, so shelly picked up asl as lil grows, she’s probably her best friend

she doesn’t end up going to college, she doesn’t really know what she wants to do and honestly? she’s surprised she’s gotten this far at all, kind of a slacker, kind of a nihilist, kind of immature but also ?? strangely clever, has potential 

after a fight to end all fights with her mom, however, shelly moves out at 18, into a shitty apartment complex with a few people

she started working at highlands country club when she was 22, after she had quit her job at the smoothie place she was working previously, a friend of a friend let her use them as a reference and lifeguarding is something she’s done before 

usually good at her job but admittedly slacks off, kind of has disdain for rich people but is a favorite among their bored children

kind of has shit luck, but shelly is a pretty upbeat person! she’s kind of a goofball and has a habit of using humor to buffer things, but it can be frustrating at times because it feels like she doesn’t take things entirely seriously, that being said, she’s incredibly loyal, despite having been burned many times, and is very protective of the people she loves and cares about, sort of likes acting out bc she’s a bit lonely?? mayb it’s a cry for help 

noncommittal usually, never rly allowed herself like a real relationship??, kind of shuts down if she has real feelings because she doesn’t really think it will end well

owns a station wagon from the 1990s, affectionately nicknamed garbage pail, it’s covered in absurd bumper stickers and knick knacks, she likes to hotbox it and sleep in it, if she’s not driving, she’s probably skating 

loves the ocean, loves water, usually living in bathing suits whenever she can even beyond work, one of her earliest memories is watching the sunrise with her mom on a beach in california 

likes pranks obvs, likes playing games and keeping the party going, likes creating different drinking games and such 

has one tattoo and she got it on a dare and she won’t tell you what it is unless you find it

stops to pet every dog she sees on the street ?? she wants a dog ??

cannot! sit! still! but usually fidgets with one of her many necklaces when she’s trying to work, would maybe give you the shirt off her back but also maybe steal it again? 

has gone through so many jobs, some she’s quit, some she’s fired, the country club is probably one of the longest ones

doesn’t really have a filter, which is why she is not working in guest relations<3

blast from the past: shelly has lived a lot of places before new york, so if your muse is from somewhere else, perhaps they met then! and maybe they had a fling or a bond and thought they’d never see each other again and surprise! she’s growing on you like a fungus

work crush: honestly? prob gets silly crushes and then acts like a total fool in front of them, i just think it would be funny, unrequited pining and all, alternatively, they have a crush on her and she’s just completely oblivious 

voice of reason: or the good influence, someone who sort of tries to warn shelly when her schemes get too elaborate and risky 

this one may be a wc on the main but a half sibling: her dad highkey just left and started a new family p much so !! i don’t think she’d know about them which i think would be. very fun
