OOPS.” IS THE BEST RUTH CAN COME UP WITH upon seeing the chaos she’s caused, a sheepish smile spreading over her face even as she moves to crouch down by where link is currently sat in the bush. “my bad. although, y’know, maybe this is karma for being a bad friend and not introducing me to your cow. or inviting me to the smoke break!” the scowl the ruth shoots link looks a lot more like a pout, but despite the expression ruth easily gets to her feet to offer link both her hands to try to help him up, ready to use her body weight as leverage. “besides, did you even like your last name that much anyways? like now you can pick a cool new one or something! reinvent yourself!” ruth pauses a moment to reach out and pluck a leaf out of link’s hair, her lips twisting in thought for a moment before she taps the leaf on the tip of link’s nose as she suggests, “like, how do you feel about lincoln laudermilk? or, ooh, mantooth?” ruth’s eyes light up then, bright as she adds, “i’ve always wanted to use that one! it’s so fun!”

“HEY LIFEGUARD!” ruth calls shamelessly from the green, the toes of her worn sneakers at the border separating the manicured lawn from the pristine club pool. her eyes are on charlie and charlie alone as she grins, and they crinkle with her mirth as she cups her hands around her mouth and calls, “can i get some help here? i’m having some trouble swimming. like i feel like i might need cpr or something?” luckily, ruth’s only audience at the moment are the little kids splashing in the pool who don’t so much as glance her way despite her obvious white lies, the fact that ruth’s feet are blatantly still planted on the ground being an obvious give away. “come help! quick!” ruth makes a point of swooning then, committing to the act by falling onto the grass dramatically. “i’m running out of air!”

Plant your feet. Look where you want the ball to go. Swing and follow through. Those words were on a near-constant loop on days like today as Esme guided budding golf pros the in’s and out’s of the sport. Some afternoons were worse, requiring far more patience and reminders not to swing clubs around the other kids. But thankfully, today, there had been no casualties and far more flying balls than she expected. Maybe they were a good teacher.

They’d just stepped off one of the stations when they caught someone watching from a far-off golf cart. Who it was, they couldn’t quite tell. “Well, don’t just stand there watchin’. Come over here and let me teach you a thing or two,” Esme called out, her left hand cupping her mouth to amplify her voice across the green. “I promise they don’t bite!”

RUTH PERKS UP FROM WHERE SHE’S SAT IN HER GOLF CART, the movement jolting the makeshift cocktail in her hand and sloshing the liquid sloppily over her fingers. but ruth could care less about the mess, her eyes bright with her excitement as she meets esme’s gaze across the green. “for real?” she doesn’t wait for a response before she’s rushing to leave her cart parked, placing her drink delicately in the passenger seat as she moves to excitedly rush across the space between them.

ruth is giggling by the time she stumbles right into esme into an embrace, squeezing them tightly even as she pants and says, “i didn’t know if you were too busy! like you looked super professional, you know? like a real teacher. kinda like a sexier ms. fizzle -- well, i mean.” ruth paused for a moment to pout, brows furrowed as she tilts her head and adds, “ms. fizzle was pretty hot.” she is quick to meet esme’s eyes then, arms still around their neck in a hug as she firmly says, “but you are one hundred percent hotter.” she leans in to kiss them sweetly on the nose before she’s pulling back, a grin quickly forming on her features as she exclaims, “i can’t believe i’m going to learn how to golf though! i feel so fancy.”

where: somewhere hidden from view, behind the caddy station. who: open!

he’s “on break”. never mind the fact that this “break” is one of five he’s taken in the past hour. having had to get creative with finding good spots to hide so that he can kick back, light up a joint, & smoke it undetected. the boredom that link can’t seem to shake somehow encouraging him to slack off even more today — though that boredom is mixed with annoyance, considering he ran into his older brother ten minutes ago, which take a guess. what did that interaction entail? chin up, dude, and maybe one day you’ll see it’s not worth it to be sleepin’ on mom & dad’s couch forever. which — low blow. and secondly, link didn’t ask to be talked down to in 95 degree heat. nor did he ask to be rich people’s ball collector for the summer. so. now he’s here, tucked away from view as he inhales his first hit, swallowing the smoke too quickly for his liking when he hears somebody shuffle nearby. link soon coughing up a storm as he attempts to clear the smoke clouds from existence, hiding the evidence that he’s getting high on the job.

RUTH MAY TECHNICALLY KINDA BE A CAT PERSON NOW, officially, at least on paper, but she liked to think she had the nose of a bloodhound. at least, when it came to certain things. the first being, drama and or general chaos, because that was usually were the fun was. and the second was contraband of the fun variety, something that link always seems to have in spades. so she wasn’t too surprised when she poked her head around the caddy station and spotted him hidden behind it. honestly, she was kinda expecting it. her grin is broad as she catches him, her left hand forming a very threatening little finger pistol if she says so herself, as she exclaims, “stick ‘em, up and hand over the goods, bud!” she swings her little pointer finger around playfully, brows waggling as she says, “don’t make me use this...”
