"you have to say trick or treat..."
Since it’s Halloween, and I’m very much done with midterms (plus I’m not going out), i’m writing a little thing (have a great spooky night, xo).
Someone is running across the streets of London; it seems they are near Baker Street. Their breathing is ragged, and the streets are dark, except for a few scattered lights.
Suddenly, they knock on the door. It opens, and Watson appears, evidently annoyed because this is already the fifth time Sherlock has tried to get little Rosie to learn the phrase “trick or treat,” despite her being barely a year old.
Sherlock is wearing a crooked devil headband, and Rosie has on a slightly oversized skeleton costume from her cousin. But they make it work.
“—Treat, treat, treat!” the little one babbles.
“Rosie, dear, you have to say ‘trick or treat,’” Watson says.
“Watson, all of this makes no sense. I don’t understand why we have to do this. It’s not even Christmas!”
“Sherlock, it’s Halloween, and children enjoy this.”
After coming inside and eating poorly caramelized apples made by Sherlock, someone knocks at the door again… Sherlock grabs Rosie, and they run to open it.
“Trick or treat!” says Lestrade, appearing in the doorway with a very sloppy Joker makeup, accompanied by Molly, who is wearing a dark little red riding hood costume that’s impressively put together.
“—Pooky-pooky-keletons,” Rosie says while she pats him gently.
“Oh, you are so spooky, sweetie,” Molly says, feigning fright.
They both come in and settle in the sitting room. Rosie stays busy playing with some skulls that might actually be real, while Lestrade shoots Sherlock a curious look.
“Well, yes! Oh, it’s Christmas! Why wouldn’t she play with real skulls? I mean, she’s clever enough, and she has to face death with neutrality.”
Watson interrupts Sherlock’s rambling and says:
“Sherlock, she’s fourteen months old, and it’s Halloween.”
