she was fairly popular among classmates , there’s a certain appeal people tend to see in european accents , & though her speech became more & more americanized the crowd of people stayed . she never felt particularly close to anyone , though , until she met nic . at 16 , killing brain cells at yet another boring party , scaring away all the boys from the brother school with well - timed discerning looks . when nic approached her , he was kind . genuinely kind . that night they talked until the sun rose , interrupted every now & then by a customer .
