For other appearances, he wore a flesh-coloured glove with a fake digit to reassure fans the star ship was in safe hands.

Eagle-eyed Trekkies have spotted Doohan's missing finger in less composed shots, including the 1967 'Cats Paw' episode and 1967's 'The Trouble with Tribbles'.

The US Navy Seabees were combat construction battalions assigned to build airstrips, roads, and fortifications in the middle of active fighting, often while battles were still raging around them. At first, Japanese snipers and machine gun crews inside reinforced pillboxes saw an obvious target — an unarmed construction worker sitting completely exposed on a piece of farm equipment. They shot at him. That was the last mistake they ever made. The Seabees had armored their bulldozers with thick steel plating, and when the shooting started, the man on the bulldozer didn't run. He lowered his blade, put the machine in gear, and drove straight into the fire.
