A height chart nobody asked for
Thinking about Toxin.
Toxin who was lucky number 1000 and meant to be some super special, extra powerful symbiote because of it. Toxin who was treated as a monster by his first host (Pat) and powerless to stop him from getting killed, used as a mindless weapon by his second host (Eddie), and forced to separate from his third host (Bren).
Toxin who had to bond to Rick to survive, but it's clearly not a good match for either of them as somehow the two became woefully incompetent despite their combined experience. Toxin who through guilt or some other incoming breakdown keeps forgetting Rick's name and calling him Pat instead.
I need Toxin to go through an arc where he experiences a true bond and regains his confidence. Maybe even unlocks his own special power, as a treat.
I'm still not over it, man.
In Cates run, the symbiote was bad and abusive to poor, sympathetic Eddie. In Ewing's run it's Eddie being awful and abusive to a timid, impressionable symbiote.
Like c'mon man. Both of these characters are freaking awful. That's why they started off as villains. They met at the worst point of their lives. Eddie was downright suicidal and the symbiote was pissed about being rejected. They were both filled to the brim with hatred and fed off each other.
But then they realized they could do good together (and the symbiote further learned they could be heroes after his stint with Flash). Are they great at it? Of course not. No one is 100% good and you don't get that way just by deciding it. It's something you work at, and these two need a lot of fucking work. It's why they're the Lethal Protector, not the caped crusader. I'm tired of writers throwing that dynamic aside to convince us this relationship is toxic and doomed to fail. First of all, it's fiction. Not every relationship has to be pure and wholesome. Second off, how many times have Eddie and the symbiote referred to each other as love or darling or outright stated how happy they are to be together?
I want to see more Venom struggling not to kill villains that would be better off dead (like how they were more than happy to throw Torment off a building). And throw in the kids they have to raise with that? Juggling all that life and heroism demands from them with a minimal success rate. It'd be so interesting. I mean one of their kids is always ready to throw himself into danger. The other is three steps away from being an evil scheming mastermind. And you know what? Let's take the time to explore Toxin's whole inferiority complex too; bout time the kid had a proper mentor anyway. One big happy symbiote family.
They're sitting on so much material and just absolutely refuse to do anything with it. Like I'm not opposed to the symbiote having a different host. I think it's good to breathe new life into a character every now and then. But by god don't just use it as an excuse to bash previous stories.
Oh the state of Venom comics man...
Like I'm not opposed to Venom having other hosts. It keeps things fresh. But I feel like All New Venom was yet another excuse for writers to hate on symbrock fans. I mean what happened? King in Black Eddie was friends with Peter, now he's like the most hated man in New York all over again?? Because of Venom War I guess?? Still makes no sense to me.
MJ is constantly ragging on him, and the narrative follows. Everything is Eddie's fault, even the evil the symbiote did. Even in Eddie's own run it's ooohh all I cared about was staying in shape. Fuck Eddie for trying to keep Carnage under control. All he does is make things worse, am I right?? You know what, let's convince Dylan his dad is a piece of shit while we're at it. Like what is going on??? What are we trying to accomplish here??

saw your reblog of my smaul art and nah I'm with you on the droid thing. I think D9 had more of a spider bot appearance but I couldn't quite put to paper what I had in my head so I just used a probe bot in its place. I see it having maybe the head of a probe bot but maybe more cylindrical? And the legs come out from the bottom in a spider-y way
Yeah, that's what I gathered about him too. I wonder if it was intentional for spybot or not. It definitely was for wrath. that book had its way of making everyting 10 times more depressing
Unfortunately there's no design notes for Spybot except for the sound design behinds his noises. I'd be interested to know if there was any inspiration behind his design.
I always wondered about the headcanon that Maul feels more comfortable around droids just because of the complicated relationship he had with D9 since that was the droid he was closest to. They didn't go in much detail about his little probe droids he had with him in Phantom Menace. Like I'm sure he only viewed them as tools but Spybot is described as "the closest thing to a pet he has."
And yes hard agree Wrath of Maul is just one bad thing after another until it's too late.
