One moment Stanley and Stanford are pirates bravely sailing through a storm and the next Stanleys dream just-stops.
Suddenly there’s a creature in front of him with no discernable features or face.
Stanley unsheathes his sword and points it at the intruder.
“Who are you? What are you doing on our ship?!” Stan demands and the creature shifts slightly.
“Let’s exchange names”
Stanley shakes his head. The thing is making his skin crawl. He needs it gone.
“No piss off!” Stanley screams and swings his sword but a six fingered hand stops him.
“Stanley, don’t be rude to our guest!”
“But-”
“It’s impolite to ask someone's name without introducing yourself first. And you promised Ma to try and behave”
Reluctantly, Stanley lowers his sword.
Ford’s right. As always. He had promised Ma to be more polite to strangers, even wrote it down on her birthday card and everything.
Stanley huffs. Fine.
“The names Stanley Caryn Pines. Now gimme yours!”
A wide familiar grin stretches far too wide over the thing's face.
“My name is -”
BOOM
Impossibly loud thunder roars over the sea as the storm is back with a vengeance. Stan sees his brother's mouth move but can’t make out the words.
Stan startles awake with a scream as the memory of the dream fades away. Ford is standing above him.
No…not Ford. It’s Stanley, grinning down at him with delight.
“Maaa!” Stanley shouts. “Stans been sleeping in my bed again!”
Shit! Stan scrambles out of bed in a panic. Why was he-
“Stan, we’ve been over this!” Ma scolds, arms on her hips. “You can’t just take your brother's things without asking.”
“I’m sorry Ma, sorry Stanley. I didn’t mean to. I think I just fell asleep…”
His mother sighs and Stan looks down, ashamed.
He should know better by now, but he keeps messing everything up. That's why no one likes him and Ford only wants to play with him in his dreams.
“Just go to the kitchen and wait until your fathers finished in the living room. Then you can have the couch.”
Stan nods as leaves, putting his arms around himself to ward off the cold.
Or a creature (a changeling?) steals Stan's name and identity and leaves Stan with nothing. All feelings directed towards Stan go to Stanley and vice versa. Stanley is Stan after all :)
Stanley could break Ford's arm and everyone would tell him it's not his fault. He didn’t mean to. They would be unreasonably angry at Stan however and find reason to punish him.
At best Stan can hope for indifference from others though most feel instinctual disdain towards him. Only in his dreams Stan gets to feel loved and play with Ford on the Stan o’War. It's his only escape even if he feels disgusted with himself afterwards. The Stan o’War belongs to Stanley and Stanford. Sixer would hate it if he goes anywhere near it. And yet Stan still loves his brother and the boat with all his heart.
And when he finds out after years on the streets that Stanley has been hurting Stanford and Ford just let him, all bets are off and Stans has nothing to lose except the brother whose love he never had in the first place.
Or Stan didn’t suffer enough in canon. Let’s make his life worse.

Thinking about them again - I love when people depict them resenting the other for not rekindling their contact by calling first, while they were both also actively not doing that.
