It’s just obvious? If an instagram-addicted teenage girl is spending hours and hours and hours a week gazing upon images of photoshopped surged models and perfecting her contouring skills, those are literally lost hours that could have been used to learn or create or study something that could actually further her life n her intellect n her ambition. You’re all liars when you claim that makeup is art, that it is creativity. It’s the absolute antithesis of anything useful or enriching

This isn’t the fault of teenage girls (and the post doesn’t suggest that it is), but it’s true. It’s true in much the same way diet culture and being told that it’s masculine for girls to play sports makes us physically weaker and less agile than we would otherwise be, the same way that socialised female competition makes us waste our time hyper-focusing on our social position and tearing other girls down instead of focusing on our subservient position, and the same way we’re taught that boys will only like us if we spend all our time trying to giggle and fritter and look like a sexy, bubbly, hare-brained little thing. So much of femininity is designed to prevent us from reaching our potential. Putting on lipstick doesn’t prevent you from being successful or intelligent, but think how many more hours we could all have sunk into cultivating our talents if we didn’t waste them on stupid bullshit like femininity.

Don’t put on makeup all you want and please push the message that women don’t need it. But if someone likes putting it on, don’t police them and say that the thing they like to do somehow erases who they are. Because not every woman is like you and some like makeup. That’s called freedom of expression, one of the things feminists fought to get.

i’d also like to point out how even the ones you offered as “freedom of expression” retain key components from the second batch. their lips are done up, they’re wearing foundation, fake eyelashes, etc. their expressions are still sexual/sensual for literally no reason. i’ve pretty much never seen a woman do makeup as an art without still conforming to those standards for her internet audience.

I am all for removing the stigma that women have to wear makeup. But creating another stigma against women who wear makeup just creates more division and more problems.

criticizinh the pressures involved that drive women to recreate the same looks over and over as well as claim it is completely done outside of outside pressures is not the same as creating a stigma against women. we can talk about the effects of makeup culture and the effects of this kind of makeup on both the wearer and other women, and that’s not attacking the women. you can criticize child labor and people won’t say you’re creating a stigma against children?? why is this different? to remove the stigma behind women being made to wear makeup, we have to talk about why and how women are pressured subconsciously and consciously into doing so, as well as its effects. you can’t reduce a stigma you don’t understand.
