Who says it's better to wear darker colors in the winter? And who says white makes you look fat?!...
I have my coffee latte at one hand and going through some magazines for an inspiration piece for my next sewing project and I realize that I still haven't tried out one of my recent purchases from Vogue Patterns. So I rushed to my fabric stash and started searching for a nice piece of fabric that I could use for this intriguing pattern. As it turned out, I did not have one piece enough to make a dress, but two great fabric pieces that would either look great together or would make me look like a cup of Coffee Latte! (i'm hoping that I succeeded in getting the former result...)
Most of you would remember the v8685  from earlier collections of Vogue Patterns. Although I had my eye on this pattern for a long time, I could not sew my version of one of the 6 versions presented in the pattern envelope.Â
The dress on the model looks like it would go perfect with a lightweight fabric. But my enthusiasm to use the pattern was too much to wait for couple of more months. So I decide that I would go for a two color look and keep the eye-catching effect of a white dress.Â
PATTERN REVIEW
Although the seams on the bust look quite intriguing at first sight, on my first fitting, I realized that it was for flat chest chics and would create a magnifier effect for an average cup size chic like myself! But at that point I had already cut my fabric and couldn't alter the pattern. So instead of crying for my bad luck, I overstitched the seams and created quite a nice look in the end.Â
The best part of this pattern is the way they've hidden the pleats in the circular cuts. I thought that since I had a very limited amount of fabric, I could go for a layered look with my coffee latte colors and make the dress look even more interesting.Â
As for the long sleeved version of the dress, I think there's a serious problem in the patterning. The size of the sleeves looked gigantic and I had to reduce the width of the sleeves quite a lot in order to get a sleek look. FYI...
As for the skirt part, I kept the layered look and stitched the waist part onto the skirt part on contrary to the pattern instructions. The truth is I still have problems in finishing the circular seams in a clean way.Â
Although I'm not fond of back zippers, for a thick and layered dress, I could not move the zipper on the side and kept it at the back. But I still do not like the idea of getting help from someone else when zipping up! :)
I think the circular seam lines would look much better with a lighter color fabric and not so much with heavy prints. So I'm quite content with my coffee latte choice of colors :)
In the end, I loved the dress! It's so comfy and quite flattering for a pear shape body type as well. I will be using this pattern with spring / summer time fabrics as well.Â
Does anyone has extra foil lying around the kitchen drawers? You do not need to limit its use with the kitchen! See the dress I made? :)))Â
No, of course I'm not serious! This is just another gorgeous fabric that I've bought... Couldn't resist the shiny color, how could I ?!...
     This is just another made-up pattern from moi... I used the top from a gorgeous pattern released by Burda Style (visit here for that project). I highly recommend this pattern guys. If you haven't bought it already, go to its international store and purchase it: here's the link.
      Below you can follow the amazing seam details on the dress. Since I had a very nice version of the original dress (seasoned with my "origami sleeves" :P), I wanted to have a more playful skirt this time.Â
What I did with the skirt part of the pattern was to first stitch together more black fabric on the waistline so that the skirt color wouldn't look too distractive. I also wanted to add pleats to the skirt part so I threw away the original pattern and used the skirt pattern I once used in my "Madmen Dress" (visit here)
   I shortened the hem and lengthened the pleats. The skirt pattern I used in the above project was also an altered one. I just love playing with patterns! One day I may end up starting my own pattern collection as well :))
So here's how it turned out: - although it may look stiff like a foil, it has quite a soft tissue by the way.
 When I stitched together the top and the bottom, it felt like I should add more color on the top in order to balance it with the shiny bottom. Then I decided to add a simple and sleek lace detail to the front and to the sleeves. Â
    Oh I just adore my new dress! It's so unique, it's so me! Why don't you try it with different color / fabric combinations and tell me how yours has turned out?   Â

I've been haunted by my overloaded day job for a while and couldn't spare any time for my night life - namely, my sewing time!Â
I finally broke the curse and sewed myself a nice, comfy jersey dress that takes an hour to sew tops.Â
     I still couldn't finish the inseams but this hasn't stopped me from wearing it right after my final rehearsal. My crazy worklife these days has only one positive impact on my sewing life. I cannot go out for fabric shopping and there's a promising decrease in my fabric stash at home (well... until the next shopping time at least...)
Does anyone remember this pattern? I've used an altered version of the pattern no. 118 from Burda Style's 10/2012 issue. I have made a spring / fall dress with an awesome purple fabric, but was not very happy of the outcome in the end. You can take a look at that project from here: An Excessively Purple Dress
My main dislike about the original pattern was the gathered waistline at one side at the front. This had a magnifier effect on my after-pregnancy-too-lazy-to-push-up tummy. So I had to copy the straight part and make a new front pattern, which turned out to be quite a simplified version of the original pattern:Â
   I also narrowed down the neckline as the original pattern was too loose for my taste and easy use. For this, all I had to do was to make the shoulder seams a little longer towards the neck.
However, due to some unexplained mystery, I keep buying only 1 meter of fabrics even if I adore the material! So, unfortunately I had to do my best with this 1 meter and couldn't sew the sleeves. Still, it looks quite well with a white long-sleeved t-shirt and makes the dress more casual, which was my intention from the beginning.Â
        So, all I have to do now is to suck in the tummy and pose with a serious manner! Do I look like I'm taking myself so seriously? Yessss :))
I know... It's been ages... I was so overloaded with my day job that I couldn't update my blog as much as I wanted.Â
But the hectic 2012 has finished and I'm back with new projects :))
So, zillion years ago I've posted a text about my upcoming sewing project. I'm glad to say that I've finished it, wore it many times and already put it in the spring/fall shelf of my wardrobe 'cause the winter is back, after long days of cold but sunny weather.
As some of you might remember,  the pattern I used was from Burda Style’s August 2012 issue ( pattern no. 137). It's also sold here separately: Shawl Collar Jacket
When I saw this pattern, the first thing I enjoyed about it was the collar. I somehow do not like classic jacket collars as I feel that they make me more "chesty":)Â
The original jacket looks terrific with this bright blue fabric and I suspected that my version may not look that sexy if I use a boring gray color - and I already had bought the fabric!
So instead of searching for a fancier fabric for this jacket, I thought about adding more color around the collar. What do you think?
 ALTERATIONS
As most of the patterns, this one required some alterations for perfect fit.
The original pattern doesn't have matching seam lines a the back (highlighted with purple above). This creates a weird look when the fabric is cut. Maybe it was just me, but when I reduced the length of the side back pattern, the lines have matched and the back side of the jacket turned out much better. Just bear it in mind if you decide to use this pattern.Â
I also reduced the length down from the waistline in order fit it for my height.Â
LINING
Well... I'm not very proud of the outcome... Although it does look good on the outside, I'm still having trouble in "bagging" the lining perfectly. Please do send me some links for good tutorials on this.Â
 The lining on the collar looked fine. It was rather easier to sew.Â
But since Burda didn't provide an extra pattern for the lining, mine turned out  almost 1 size larger than I should have cut :(
Still, it looks fine from the outside and the good news is I have more sewing project to finalize before I learn how to insert jacket lining professionally :)Â
I have even less time I can spare for my sewing passion this month. But I'm determined to keep up with my sewing life and blogging about it! :)Â

I really liked this collar style as it allows free movement when wearing a jacket for work.Â
I've never made a shawl collar before and I really liked the way it looks on the model. We'll see whether I'll be able to pose like her when I finish the project :) Considering my 6 feet tall figure, I think I should shorten the waist part a bit.Â
As I cannot go for a fabric shopping, I have to use something from my fabric stash. So I decided to use this gray lightweight woven fabric with a satin facing that I've used for a blouse before. I just adore colorful facings! :)
Although the pattern looks stunning on the model, I suspect that part of is has to do with the tempting blue color of the fabric used. So my fairly modest gray fabric may not be able to show off as I much as I wanted. Thus, I'm thinking about putting a contrast color bias on the shawl collar. We'll see how it'll end up :)
I know, I'm terribly behind my posting schedule :( But I started a new project lately, which requires 150% of my time until February... But I could not keep myself away from the blog any longer and decided to share with you a project I finished right before my hectic work life began.Â
As seen above, this time it is not the pattern (or our size 0 model's mind-blowing posing skills) that shine out, but the fabric with amazing watercolor prints on...
So today, I decided to express myself with a painting and I grabbed the watercolor palette of my son and started discovering the artistic side of me...

Watch and Learn Grasshopper - Origami Raglan Sleeves Tutorial
Almost everyone who've read my post about the Red Dress I made using Burda Style's 08/2012 no. 121 pattern, were very interested in how I made the origami sleeves and added it to the original dress pattern.Â
As said before in my related post, I was inspired by Straight Grain's project she made for her adorable daughter. She provides a great tutorial about it in her blog. But let me share with you how I interpreted the technique and adopted it into a commercial pattern.Â
1- In a normal  raglan sleeve pattern you do not need to follow this step. But for the Burda Style's 08/2012 no. 121 pattern, you need to stick together the 2 shoulder pattern pieces to proceed.
Get the shoulder / sleeve pattern in one piece. Measure the length of your pattern and make sure that you have at least twice amount fabric for getting the origami effect.Â
Cut a rectangular shaped fabric with given length.
2- Start folding the rectangular shaped fabric with app. 3 cm (1.2 inches) and pin it.Â
3- Arrange the width of your machine to the max.Â
4- Start stitching.
5- When you finish the first fold, follow the first steps for the following folds and make sure that you get a straight line and same width.
Follow the measuring lines next to the presser foot to get the stitches neat.Â
6 - Once you have a folded fabric long enough to cover your sleeve / shoulder pattern, pin your pattern onto the fabric.Â
Make sure that the folded pleats will look down once you sew it onto your outfit. Â Remember that this is a raglan sleeve.Â
7- In order to keep it neat, straight stitch around the pieces before you take the pins out.Â
8- Now your raglan sleeve should look like this.Â
9- Take the center of your shoulder and mark it with pins from both ends. (If you've used this very pattern, just follow the center line of the 2 pattern pieces) Â
10 - Now pin the folds backwards.Â
11- Since this is a tight-fitting dress, make sure that you get the folding line correctly.
For a tight-fitting sleeve, it's not exactly in half as suggested by An from Straight Grain.
12- Now machine stitch the folding line and you have a gorgeous looking origami sleeve!Â
For the ones who intend to adopt this technique onto the BurdaStyle's pattern, you are now free to stitch it onto the dress and then to the long part of the sleeve. Â
