whenever I get overstimulated I should be able to shake it off like this
Recovering from autistic burnout as a high-masking adult:
To recover, you literally need to manually learn skills that most people learn as a toddler
You need to learn what makes your body uncomfortable, and what to do to fix it
If you are high-masking, that usually means that you have learned to ignore every distress signal your body sends unless it is a distress signal that a neurotypical person would recognize. People have likely been unintentionally gaslighting you about your lived experience your entire life
If you feel bad or panicked for no reason, stop and try to pay attention to your body. Are you tense? You are likely feeling physical pain somewhere. If you've been gaslit about your pain your entire life, you might not be able to identify it.
Go through a sensory checklist.
SIGHT: Try closing and covering your eyes. If this gives you relief, the lights are probably too bright. You may also need differently-colored lights
SOUND: Cover your ears. Does this give you relief? If so, you may need earplugs or noise canceling headphones. You may also benefit from a neutral or pleasant background noise, like soft music or brown noise.
TOUCH: Are your clothes uncomfortable? Your chair? Your body? Do you feel greasy, like you need a shower? Do you need softer, sensory-friendly clothing?
TASTE: Do you need to brush your teeth or tongue? Would chewing on something help?
SMELL: Is there a strong or unpleasant smell in the room? Do you need to clean or empty a trash can? Would an air purifier help? Would a pleasant smell like a candle help?
INTEROCEPTION: Are you hungry? Thirsty? Tired? How is your posture? Are any of your muscles tight or sore? Scan your body slowly from head to feet, tensing and loosening each group of muscles. Going for a walk or doing a series of quick stretches may help a lot.
Learning how to do this stuff is not intuitive, if you've had an entire lifetime of gaslighting telling you that everything hurting you isn't a big deal and you're being dramatic over nothing.
This takes time, it takes work, it's not intuitive, and it's hard. Most people forget how hard it is, because they learned this as toddlers.
If you want to recover, you need to relearn your whole body. And get over your idea of "normal" and just wear the damn sunglasses and put on the headphones. If people stare, fuck em. You're disabled and they can deal with that.
”I have this artistic idea but not the skills to achieve it to the standard I want.”
congrats! Now you have a motif! A recurring theme! A focus for your art! Something to haunt you!
Seventeen still lives of dandelions? Three hundred poems about grief? A sketchbook dedicated to your grandmother’s house? Two books trying to unravel the complexities of familial relationships?
Don’t let the fear of it not being perfect on the first try stop you from being Weird About It!
Please view Hokusai's gradual working towards The Great Wave Off Kanagawa, over a period of 39 years.
An early exploration of the themes Hokusai would keep coming back to is Spring in Enoshima, done in 1793 when he was 33. The wave is small and there are no boats, but Mt Fuji is clear in the background, and Enoshima is in Kanagawa, so we are clearly beginning to work towards something here.
A second pass, eleven years later in 1803 when he was 44. The title of this one begins to get more familiar: The View of Honmoku Off Kanazawa. It has a towering wave over a smaller boat, but Mt Fuji is not present, and the boat is considerably larger and has a sail. But the feeling of danger in the wave and the smallness of the boat are here, and of course the general composition is definitely recognizable.
This is A View Of Express Delivery Boats, done in 1805, merely two years later at age 46. Here we find the wave and the boats almost exactly as we'll find them in The Great Wave Off Kanagawa, though Mt Fuji isn't present, and the location is uncertain. And it's a good picture! The wave is threatening, the boats are small -- but the feeling of "ocean" isn't really there yet, is it? It's unlikely this picture would have become a classic for the ages. But that's okay, there's still time.
And here we have it, a full 26 years later, done by Hokusai in 1831 at the age of 72. The Great Wave Off Kanagawa, one of the most recognizable pieces of art in the world. The boats are there, the mountain is there, the wave is there, and the FEELING is there. He did it! He reached the apex of his ongoing motif and theme!
Or did he? Because the whole point of a motif is not that you're striving to get to the perfect version of it, the one idealized image you carried in your head all along, and when it is done, you are also done. Hokusai is on record at the age of 73 saying he'd only just begun to feel like he was learning how to draw things properly, and that "if I keep up my efforts, I will have even a better understanding when I was 80 and by 90 will have penetrated to the heart of things. At 100, I may reach a level of divine understanding, and if I live decades beyond that, everything I paint — dot and line — will be alive." He had drawn The Great Wave, but he didn't believe he was finished -- he thought that he was still just beginning to get started.
And he wasn't finished with his ocean motif, either. Please check out his Mt Fuji At Sea, done in 1834 at the age of 75.
It's all there; Mt Fuji, the ocean, the wave. The boats are gone, but replaced with birds, flying with the wave instead of fighting against it. It's not as famous as The Great Wave Off Kanagawa, but that's not what motifs are for -- each successive work does not have to surpass the previous in terms of success, especially in terms of external success. They're there for you to keep playing with, keep remixing and re-experiencing, for as long as you think you have something to say.

Urgent support for Sudanese community kitchen
Donations have almost completely stopped for the community kitchen Thomaserena has been supporting. They have ceased operations as of yesterday, and with nothing to send them, ThomaSerena is about to put himself into more debt to try and help get the kitchen running again.
Thomaserena has been left to burden the strain every time we fall short. He has taken out loans to make up for the campaign's shortcomings. We cannot ignore his and other Sudanese people's calls for support. When we turn a blind eye, it makes us no better than the international powers who are complicit in the genocide destroying Sudan.
The chuffed for the community kitchen needs to reach €25k within the next week. It is currently at €21k. Please share and donate if you can.
As a Sudanese living in Egypt, my heart aches every day for the people of Sudan - both those still enduring unimaginable hardship back home,
Thomaserena is vetted on SudanFunds.com and has been shared by Sara (bsonblast). If you check the updates section on chuffed, you can also find proof of the transfers ThomaSerena has made.

They should invent a cry for help that has zero negative effects on anybody and also that makes everyone treat you like a little animal in a cardboard box. But everyone’s cool with it because you’re a cute little animal and not an adult human that needs to get their shit together to stay alive
I’ve ranted about this before, but if I hear one more person tell me as a disabled, chronically ill person that I “need reset my vagus nerve” and they suggest a magnesium bath soak and what is essentially chamomile tea mixed with a laxative to fix it, I refuse to be held responsible for my actions.
“Your vagus nerve has stopped working,” worstie, that’s called death.
I was talking about the intensive physical therapy I do to help with my dysautonomia, which is listed in my medical file as autonomic failure, meaning my autonomic nervous system does not function correctly and many parts of my body that should be automatically regulated are not.
And I got hit with, “oh, I take a bath magnesium when that happens to me—“
And I got so irritated my heart hit 160bpm and I almost syncoped. So y’know, a dysregulated nervous system response lol

As an Indigenous person living in Canada, it is ABSURD to me that my life and wellbeing, in my ways, require and are dependent on me being able to “make nice” with my oppressors, or at the very least, co-exist.
It’s like being forced to maintain a relationship with your abuser. Most people can recognize that, that’s an insane expectation.
Anyway! No pressure to watch the link. Just thought you might be interested.
I have so many thoughts about this, but then I realised I would probably have to make like seven whole new posts.
In Australia, Indigenous people have to conciously make political reforms with the constant idea of 'working together' sidelining our anger because we know it'll just invite retailiation.
But when we do, (Such as the Uluru statement from the heart. three measly minor adjustments to australian government that didnt even adjust the power to make changes) they're absolutely gutted, butchered and we're retaliated against anyway.
and when we get mad about how our human rights are violated, its always 'its all in the past,' 'why cant you let it go?' 'why are aboriginal people always making trouble'
and the blame is always on us🙄
Thanks for sending the link.

My woke take, as someone who has worked in both a public library and a school library, is that we desperately need both more books that are at a higher reading level but a less mature subject matter, and more books that are at a lower reading level but a more mature subject matter, because 8 year olds who are advanced readers are still 8 year olds and don't want to read about graphic violence and torture, and teens and adults who have learning difficulties or who are just later readers for whatever reason are still teens and adults and don't want to read about Billy the Bunny going to school or whatever the hell.
