Before you go grey
Tips for maintaining and being the best grey you can be.
Being a sexy silver or grey fox is very fashionable at the moment. Before you dive into going grey, here are a few things you need to know.
Get your hair dyed professionally for your first grey-ing.
I know this seems like a pretty shitty first step but trust me, this is important. Going grey is harsh on your hair, it involves one or two bleaching steps (depending on how dark your hair is), toning (to remove brassiness) and then dying your hair grey. Unless you seriously know what your doing, you need to see a professional. A good hairdresser will also put a treatment through your hair during these steps. If your hair is naturally very dark, I recommend having your hair dyed in a gradient, darker at the roots and lighter at the ends, so when your roots grow out they won’t look so obvious.
Day to Day maintenance
There are a few options for this. I highly suggest that your reduce the amount of times you wash your hair to once or twice a week, using dry shampoo in between. Don’t worry, dry shampoo is pretty damn cheap ($3 - $10) and you can pick it up from coles. woolies, kmart, target, basically anywhere. Dry shampoo is a fine powder that dries up all oiliness and greasiness in your hair, keeping it fresh and soft in between washes.
Weekly maintenance
When you do get around to washing your hair, there are a few options. I like to use Provoke touch of silver brightening shampoo and the matching conditioner which takes the brassiness and yellowing out of my hair.
I have also used NAK violet pearl colour masque.
These products are great but you have to leave them in for 10-30 minutes before washing them out...which means chillin out in the bath and shower or jumping in and out of the shower which in a pain in the ass.
Monthly maintenance
If the colour masques and shampoo/conditioner combination is not cutting it anymore, then it’s time for a dye touch up. There are a range of hair dye products out there but I have one word of advice, spending the extra dollarydoos on products will save your hair.
BOX DYES WILL STRIP YOUR HAIR AND MAKE IT FALL OUT. Schwarzkopf Live Colour silver toner is the devil, I’ve used this product and my hair was coming out in clumps.
I recommend Manic Panic Virgin Snow or DARE to Mix.
Arctic Fox Sterling isn’t great, it’s quite see through, so your dye job has to be perfect or it’ll look kind of rubbish.
Colour Pallet
This may sound odd, but when you dye your hair, you need to take into account your makeup colour pallet. Certain colours will look odd on you and others will look fantastic. You may look more washed out than your use to. I recommend bold, dark eye makeup, bright blush and bright or super dark lipsticks.
