My job is kind of killing me in a number of ways but I read a study today about how children who have one adult figure in their life who believes in them and is consistent creates better emotional regulation and resilience and overall success. And that's really nice. A lot of my students over the years who are first generation east Asian have ended up speaking to me at some point or another about essentially filial piety. And the lack of positive recognition/verbal expressions of love from the adults in their lives. And obviously I wouldn't make some mass generalization about those populations/however, culturally how they show care is often different from the clear verbal affirmations of the West, and the children are being raised in the West. And so I make sure to tell them often how proud I am of them and how much I believe in them and how I will be there to support them every step of the way as they grow and change. I tell them they never have to apologize to me for anything. I tell them they are capable and smart and strong and that everything will be all right in the end. Unfortunately I definitely cannot do this job forever because as I said above it's killing me. But the idea of leaving is really hard because I am emotionally invested in these kids. I know another warm body will take my place but still.
