Welcome to the Separate but sequel movie review podcast.
On this non review episode of the podcast we redefine what constitutes as a "Separate But Sequel" film as well as introduce more Sequel related Terminology that we may refer to in future episodes. The terms we introduce are Primary film, Chronicle sequel, Departure sequel, Spiritual sequel, Relay sequel, Replicate sequel, Rehash sequel, Cross media sequel, Inconsequential stand alone film, selective canon sequel, and canonical sets. These terms we came up with in order to expand our scope of which sequels we could review for this podcast.

The Sequel Terminology Definitions
Separate But Sequel - A film that is produced with a different creative team from the original source material with intent to reiterate or reinvent the original property considerably for the purpose of film franchising.
Primary Film- The original film in a film franchise series.
Chronicle Sequel- A sequel film that continues the story of the primary film with its principle creative team.
Departure Sequel- A sequel film that is branded into a franchise but is either a clear departure or stemmed from a concept that was not the original property.
Spiritual Sequel- A film that is made that could be considered by some to be an unofficial sequel to a primary film but for legal or logical reasons is not considered it's actual sequel.
Relay Sequels- Sequel films that although continue the story of a primary film but the producers bring in a new creative team to tackle the material.
Replicate Sequel- A sequel film that pretty much recreates the situations from a primary film but with a new cast.
Spin off Sequel-A film that follows the adventures or exploits of a secondary character of an already established property.
Rehash Sequel-A sequel film that is made by the principle creative team but has taken a notable shift in tone or conception.
Cross media Sequel- A film that adapts a non-origin story of an already established property or creates new canon apart from the original source material.
Iconic characters- Characters that has an exceptionally extensive awareness in pop culture so much they have become iconic entities and can function in a story without affecting it's mythology.
Inconsequential stand alone film- A film that features an iconic character/s that are so iconic that mythology is inconsequential.
Selective canon Sequel- These sequel films tend to contextualize themselves into the universe of their franchise by establishing connections to some of the earlier films but ignore others.
Canonical sets- These sets within a broader franchise invite subsets of creative teams to tackle the material, commonly in trilogy sets.
