What is the “Montréal’s Burrito Project” ?
The Burrito Project in Montréal was created to join a movement that first originated in California.
Currently, the Burrito Project exists in 35 Cities throughout North America.
The project is about getting people to participate together in the preparation and distribution of hot nutricious Burritos to the homeless.
In Montréal, the project is funded from the sales of Burritos made at the “People’s Potato Kitchen" . These 1 pound Vegan Burritos are filled with beans, rice and vegetables.
We walk around in teams with spicy and non-spicy Burritos in our bags, in search of the hungry people that live on the streets.
Because of the cold winter weather, we also visit the metro underground network and restaurants where they go to stay warm.
When we offer a hot Burrito, we offer much more than hot conforting food on a cold day. The idea behind the project is also to listen to what the person wants to share with us. The stories of the people I’ve met Sunday, really touched me.
One of them is the young man that gave me permission to take anonymous pictures of him. When I told him that I wanted to blog about this project, he was the one that suggested taking a picture of him while he took a bite into a Burrito. He then talked about a dog he once had and loved very much .
We also met an older gentleman who joyfully told us, that it was his last week on the streets because he had inherited a luxurious house in California.
Later on, a regular volunteer told me, that this man tells them the same story every week.
Maybe, it’s his way of coping with his harsch reality.
I Tweeted about Marcel back in December 2013:
In that cold, Marcel was sitting on the pavement. Chatted, gave him my ear band+$/shame he has no home #GiveForward pic.twitter.com/Sy9TAx1A5b

Marcel looked in better shape then when I first met him but he is still homeless.
Hoping all of them will find a place of their own that they can call home.
In the meantime, I will participate again in the Montréal’s Buritto Project and may many more people join me in this effort to alleviate hunger and to keep contact with the homeless people of downtown Montréal.
