Roy has only ever known football and himself to be a football player. He doesn’t exist outside of this idea of himself. But unfortunately he is not the player that he used to be as he has gotten older (WHICH IS COMPLETELY NATURAL.) and that fear/pain has manifested in himself in his day to day life (anger and resentfulness for example). This fear and pain impacts how he interacts with others. He thinks that people only know him as this legend and hate to see how he has fallen. That his fans only love him when he’s the “legend.” Because of how he’s fallen within the football ranks he’s critical of himself outside of football. We know that Roy likes to self sabotage and thinks he needs to ruin something good before it’s ruined for him so when things get hard and he doesn’t know how to explain what he’s feeling he pushes people away. Which leads to how his identity crisis from retiring shows that he is a self sabotager because of how he broke up with keeley out of nowhere. I personally believe that Roy never had enough time to understand this transition he was going through from playing football to retiring, he just was thrown back in the ring. Football was seriously his whole life… he was shipped off at 9 years old to play. It’s all he’s ever known. He never learned how to appropriately cope with everything he was dealing with. He’s not the way he was because he’s not a footballer and he’s not with the person he loves the most anymore (because of his own doing)… but even if he’s not playing as well as the legend roy Kent, or even playing football at all, or with keeley, in the end, he’s trying to grow to be someone he can be proud of.
