Me: Well, yes, I suppose. Do you know how many fan-zines your wife left you with?

Him: Well, a lot, 400, 500...?

Me (trying so hard to catch up since I got here in September and I'm still behind on my posting of zines): Uh... how many boxes?

Him: About 8 or 9?

Me: gasp.

So we made plans for him to drop them off. I kind of thought he was thinking of fan-zines like "Mojo" or "Uncut" or all of those really cool magazines that talk about films and music. Maybe I won't be saddled down too bad and I can take some of them to the San Diego Friends of the Library Book Store.

Well, I got the call and donation yesterday. It was 14 boxes. FULL of odd Stargate, Star Wars, Star Trek, etc. fan mags that were apparently made by fans in the days of old printers and spiral binding and boy there are a lot of fan-zines. So I have that to look forward to.

Just letting you know - just in case I'm skimpy on my descriptions of other zines and give you "just the facts, ma'am" for a while.

Woohoo!

"Ladies Ladies Ladies" by Madeline Helland, Aviatrix Press, 2nd Edition, 2024

I used to buy those little thin clip art books. You could clip out little pieces of art... with scissors and they came in different sizes because we didn't have computers to make them the right sizes at the time. It was great, I loved all of the vintage pix and ad representations.

Imagine my surprise when I didn't have to clip them out anymore and I could just download them... ha ha just kidding. Imagine my surprise when I opened this up and the author explained that she had found all of these advertising artefacts that portrayed women. She gathered all of these "cuts" to print them and got depressed to see how many of them were women of the time doing stereotypical women of the time things like making dinner or being scolded by her supposed loved one. Her idea of printing them went *poof* when she changed her job and no longer had access to her work's printer. BUT THE LADIES HAUNTED HER. So she went back, used a risograph to set those ladies in ink... on a risograph. Not all of the ladies, just the ones not accompanied by men. It's a great lil zine. I love it. It reminds me of my clip art days and I loved reading the preamble.

Heyyy I already posted about this one when it had a much cooler cover and, of course, was cooler because it was en français! But now I can actually read the content and it is STILL surreal and hijinx STILL ensue. Now you can come down for a bilingual experience!

Well, I guess if something is ailing me, I'd wanna be nursed back to health by Bobby Dylan. I know that's probably an unpopular opinion from what I've heard of his recent stint on tour in San Diego, where he sat, back to the crowd, "sang" his songs and didn't even introduce the band before he left. (Boo!) But if was a younger Bobby Dylan, suuure!

This zine serves as a recipe book for remedies to your ailments by prescribing you some Dylan tunes for any situation. Want a song for when you're in love? There is no better song to give you for that feeling than "Make You Feel My Love" - what about when you're out of love? "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright" - there are about 10-12 songs for each... I don't want to say ailment, but you get the idea, right?

For "caffeine/jumper cables for the spirit" this wheel's on fire, shelter from the storm it's alright ma, I'm only bleeding.

"Archival Preservation En Casa: A Bilingual Zine by Chicano Park Museum & Cultural Center by our (awesome) library intern, Diego Jimenez!

I can NOT tell you how many times I’ve looked at all of my physical photos, all of the slides my dad left me when he passed, all of the negatives, etc. ALL OF THAT… it’s just so much and bogging me down! Well, this lil zine has some helpful hints of how to scan your photos. Do you want to scan them on a scanner? Maybe you can use your camera? Perhaps, you can come to a library that has a Makerspace or Digital Lab? If you want to do that it's best to make an appointment. I don’t think I really emphasized (other than the title) but the zine IS bilingual, so it helps many of us in San Diego! Maybe one day it will be available in other languages, but it is a great start. Diego shows what settings you should use for scanning negatives or photos. There’s a lot of info on how to scan with your camera, too. I think I really need to buy this for myself. I know we’re supposed to push the “loaning is good” thing for libraries, but this looks right up my alley! So yeah – it’s done in conjunction with The Chicano Park Museum & Cultural Center their address is 1960 National Ave San Diego, CA. 92113
