as far as i can tell, every other song is titled the standard way for english, where every word is capitalized other than things like "and", "of", or "the", so long as they're not the first word. the one exception is sans., which is the same song as it was in undertale and is titled the same way.

in homestuck, if you're not familiar, different characters type in different ways that tell us certain things about them. Rose types very formally with good punctuation, Dave types in all lowercase, Karkat types in all caps, and so on. this is such a big part of homestuck that we can often identify the writer/speaker just by the way they write or speak, even when their name is obscured. this has been very relevant in recent updates to HS:BC, even!

so why does this matter to deltarune? well. hate to break it to those of you who pretend these games didn't inherit stuff from homestuck, but ut/dr characters absolutely do this too. sans speaks in all lowercase, papyrus in all caps, queen speaks With Each Word Capitalized, the list goes on.

do you know who else speaks in all caps? in short phrases, sometimes separating out single words for emphasis?

now, not to be that guy, but...

the same voice as the twitter account, the one we hear at the very start of the game, who guides us through making our vessel, who speaks to us when we die, who is probably gaster, speaks in all caps. that's one of the very few things we know for sure about him.

we know this voice-who-is-probably-gaster has access to the twitter account. he wrote the psn achievements:

so, to me at least, it follows that he could name some of the ost. but then why only some of it? if we assume the standardly-capitalized songs are just named by Toby as the composer (i certainly don't think it fits with any of the in game characters we know), then who named the songs with only the first word capitalized? why are they written that way?

these songs are only present in chapter four so far, and they bookend the chapter's ost -- Old wooden rafters is the first song and Concert for you is the last.

my first thought was maybe it could be the person trapped in the code, so i went and looked at their dialogue again.

and.... i don't think it's them. it certainly could be, but it just feels different to me. the most glaring difference in my opinion is the capitalization of TV in the sixth line of this screenshot -- the person naming these songs chose not to capitalize a proper noun in Another day in hometown, so they might be from the Jake English school of typist, and capitalize just the first letter of the sentence and nothing else, regardless of proper nouns or acronyms.

so if it's not the person lost in the code, then who is it?

my crazy theory? i think it's kris.

now hear me out. let's take another look at the probably-gaster songs: ANOTHER HIM plays during the gonermaker sequence (and is literally a rearrangement of Gaster's Theme as heard in undertale), THE WORLD REVOLVING is jevil's battle theme, multiple area themes are present, multiple songs associated with spamton are present, as well as songs associated with the titan and all of the sword route themes(!!).

now let's look at where the single-capitalized songs play: Old wooden rafters -- the church after services are over; Another day in hometown -- walking around hometown after church with susie; The distance between two -- dess' room & the soul's joyride through the vents; Wise words -- the fun gang gets advice from gerson; Piano that may not be played that well -- kris playing the piano in the dark world without the player; Need a hand!? -- the fun gang gets gerson's help in battle; The place where it rained -- walking around hometown with susie after closing all the church fountains; and Concert for you -- the one note "plink" of piano keys that plays when you (the player) interact with the piano.

Concert for you is particularly interesting not that it's included in the ost at all -- Toby is somewhat inconsistent with which sound effects are put on the albums as songs, and i don't think it necessarily means anything significant that Crickets or Weird Birds are on there -- but that it's the very last song on the album, despite not necessarily being near the end of the chapter at all.

most of these songs include piano in one way or another, and Piano that may not be played that well sounds very much like how Kris would describe their piano playing -- downplaying their skill and their talent. Noelle says that Kris speaks with a "deadpan, mumbly voice", which i certainly think matches these titles and that typing style.

the question remains, of course, why now, in this chapter? if it is Kris, how are they doing this and why did they only start now? if it's not Kris, then who is it? i'm definitely looking forward to seeing if these patterns continue in chapter five; if we'll keep getting titles like these and like the probably-gaster ones. maybe we'll even get a new style of title and someone else will join the fray. who knows! i do wonder if this follows in the japanese versions of the song names; i'll have to look into that.
