Takovite
A rare carbonate mineral composed of nickel and aluminium. It was first discovered in 1957 in Takovo, Serbia which is where it gets its name and is usually found in Bauxite deposits and as an alteration product in nickel rich deposits.
It is known for its blueish green to yellowish green colour. It tends to form as poorly crystallised masses and encrustations.
It is considered rare as there are only limited occurrences of this mineral worldwide.
The origin of this piece is the Lavrion District Mines in Attica, Greece.

Matrix covered with delicate acicular sprays of electric blue cyanotrichite (Cu4Al2(SO4)(OH)12·2H2O). From the Grandview Mine, Horseshoe Mesa, Coconino County, Arizona, USA.
The Grandview (or Grand View) mine is a closed Cu-U occurrence/mine located near Horseshoe Mesa on the South rim of the Grand Canyon. The mineral deposits at the Grand View Mine were discovered in 1890 with production between 1893 and 1916. The mine was operated by the Canyon Copper Company between 1901 to 1908. It closed in 1907, but it went through a series of owners until William Randolph Hearst acquired it. Hearst sold the property to the US Park Service in 1940. It's now part of the Grand Canyon National Park. The Grandview Mine is now a roost for protected bat species, including Townsend’s Big-eared Bat (Corynorthinus townsendii). 💕🧊 #Throwbackthursday: this unbelievable cluster has such a fresh, bright color palette! Rhodochrosite, Fluorite, & Quartz plate from Sweet Home Mine—spotted in 2018, at Leadville’s neatest rock shop, the Rock Hut. I haven’t been back for a bit so I don’t know if the cluster is still there, but it lives in my memory no matter where it resides today. 💕🧊 #tbt #nfs #memoriesssss #rhodochrosite #fluorite #crystals #rocks #minerals #sweethome #phenomenalgems
Diabase thin section, 50X magnification, crosspolarized light.
Awesome animated xsec! Love that you can see the extinction angles. I see Ca-rich feldspars, and what i think is biotite?
Good eye with the feldspar! This sample contained a large amount of labradorite. There are a few biotite crystals, but the high birefringence mineral seen here is pyroxene!

LOOK alright I know I've said some things about the French in the past, BUT.
If they do this I will be singing La Marseillaise in the fucking streets.

Have you ever heard of the Subway Garnet? This piece of almandine was discovered in 1885 under 35th Street between 7th Avenue and Broadway, near Herald Square. Its nickname is misleading, because it was actually uncovered during excavation for sewer pipes. Construction for New York City subways did not begin until 1900, more than a decade after this specimen was found—but who wants to get close to the Sewer Garnet?
