I know I bang on a lot about how much I cherish Toadvine and the Kid’s weird violent friendship but the other heavy hitter is Tobin and the Kid. Toadvine may be the horrible bloody equal to the Kid’s violent nature but Tobin is a much softer, almost caring parental figure who seems to genuinely care for the boy (always riding beside him, teaching him things, telling him endless boring stories) but I also think that tobin is by NO means a good guy. He’s no saint, he’s just as rotten as the rest of the gang, even if he still has a smidgen of that humanity left that he shares with the Kid. In the final few chapters before the timeskip, tobin manipulates the kid purely for his own personal gain (to kill the judge) knowing that the kid was a much better shot than him. He even goes as far as to convince the kid that the judge has killed Davey and Toadvine just so he’ll fight, knowing it was probably a suicide mission.
Maybe he did feel those pangs of maternal care but he was just as wicked as the rest of them, disguised around his faith and kind-ish nature. He’s selfish, using the boy as much as glanton or holden all while wrapping it up with a neater bow. He must truly believe himself a saint for helping the Kid, maybe it will undo his sins? How the FUCK does an ex-priest end up in the Glanton gang? I do love Benjamin but he is just as bad as Glanton, using the Kid’s very easily impressionable and immensely solitary nature for their own gain.
