On May 22, 2015, CL, Diplo, Riff Raff, and OG Maco released "Doctor Pepper." Guess what? It's a song and CL raps, and it does song things, just not well.
And they didnāt even talk about how bad the cover is. Itās so budget 90s it's painful. Just⦠everything about this is so bad?? Producer, song, cover, everythingā¦
I want CL to do well in the US, but how is she planning on doing well with this tripe?
Wow. Either gamecentre live is lying to me, or the first period of the Red Wings-Islanders game was insane. (score: 3-3)
trounorth said: No, this is great, thank you!!!! Iām not sure when the season begins/ends, or when he came back to Canada, but he says CBR Braves so I assume he was there after they folded or whatever.
Oh awesome!! Is it weird to be excited to know about any of the Braves through too many degrees of separation? I kind of am though.
The AIHLās season is during the winter months, but because Australiaās in the southern hemisphere itās obviously the opposite from most of the world. It begins about a month from now and ends in August.Ā

Hey! How big is the AIHL? I know a guy who played for the Braves but I never thought of it as a big deal.
Well itās a big deal in the way that any league sanctioned by the national sport federation is a big deal, but practically speaking itās tiny. Hockeyās just not a big sport in Australia at all. I could probably name you at least 5 other sports off the top of my head that I think are bigger in Australian sports than hockey. Back when Ryan Lowe (who played for the Sydney Bears and Canberra Knights) got an emergency goalie position with the Sharks back in November, we got this gem of a line from an Australian sports blog:Ā āThe more amusing thing is the US reporting the AIHL as a professional hockey league.ā
The AIHLās a semi-pro league with 8 teams (it used to have 9, but the Gold Coast team folded this off-season due to the lack of a rink) that doesnāt pay itās players, although I think the team pays for their accommodation and transport when they travel for games. In fact, the two Sydney teams require the players to pay an insurance fee to join. So players have to hold down a day job in order to get by, and I suspect itās similar to the CWHL in that respect (sportsnet did a video about the ladies in the CWHL recently, if you havenāt seen it). If this was asked in terms of my recent posts about the Mustangsā training camp: they do the whole nine yards of tryouts and training camp where guys get cut. Part of it is because the AIHL is seen as a league that is nurturing Australian hockey, which has led to a lot of angst about having import players and nurturing home-grown talent vs raising the leagueās standard. They have a cap of 6 import players, similar to other European leagues. I donāt know if your guy was an import, but if he was chances are he was one of the better players on the team due to the cap.Ā
To put the talent level of the league into perspective, hereās the resumes of some of the more prolific players in the Mustangs: Pat OāKane used to play in NCAA DIV-III (NCAAās 2nd tier). Victor Gibbs Sjodin played with the WHLās Portland Winterhawks, was drafted in the 7th round by the Preds (it was News in Mustangs articles when he was a new import), and played in Swedenās Allsvenskan (their second tier league). Joey Hughes also played in NCAA DIV-III, and in the SPHL. Hewittsports did a comparison to other leagues, including the Belgian league and The British Victoria Ice Hockey League. Which⦠I mean, I fully respect anyone who plays hockey at any sort of pro level, and I thought they were really good when I watched their games. But when we talk about North American hockey which is led by the NHL, the AIHL obviously doesnāt really come close.Ā
Australian hockey in general is well aware of its place within international hockey, in which they know theyāre scrabbling for relevancy, not the top positions in the sport like Canada, Sweden, and pretty much anyone in the World Championships. Nathan Walker (if you managed to avoid all the kangaroo jokes last summer, he was the first Australian ever to be drafted, 3rd round by the Caps, and is playing in the AHL) is Australiaās best player, and I think he managed to drag them into DIV-IB in the IIHF world group a few years ago (which confusingly is the 3rd-tier behind Top and DIV-IA), but theyāve been relegated back to DIV-IIA since then. That puts them on par with teams like Britain, Iceland, and Serbia.Ā
Anyway, in the grand scheme of things the AIHL probably isnāt a big deal, but I had great fun watching them. Tickets were less than $20, and the arenas arenāt very big but that meant I always got good seats. Except for the one time I came late to the derby, and everyone was just looking for a place to stand (if you donāt know what a derby is, its when the home and away team is from the same city. Best atmosphere ever). I also watched my first hockey game there, so it kind of sucked me in and refused to let go. Also apropos of nothing, rather hilariously and because heās one of my favourite players, one of the alternate captains in the Mustangs is named Patrick OāKane, whoās from America, and wears #89. Believe me when I say the Mustangs twitter gets SO many Patrick Kane jokes out of that one.Ā
Alos, if the guy you know played for the Braveā¦Ā !!!!!! Did he play for them last season? Because if not he probably played for the Knights. I donāt know how much you know about the Brave, but theyāre a great story where the Canberra Knights folded 2 off seasons ago due to lack of finances, but the players came together and formed their own team. Then they called themselves the CBR Brave, because the old management refused to let go of the naming rights. And they went on to make the playoffs in their first season last year. Iām pretty much in love with them the same way anyone who follows the AIHL is in love with them. (I root for them whenever the Mustangs arenāt playing.)Ā
So yeah. This ends my long-ass long-winded answer about the AIHL and Australian hockey. Iām really sorry you probably got waaay more out of it than you wanted. :3
Apparently the Melbourne Mustangs was Minnesota Wild footage for their training. Are they watching #9? I canāt quite make out the number on his jersey but it would make sense to be watching the captain. Other options include #3 and #6 (Charlie Coyle and... someone).
I spent my whole life thinking that futbol was a derivative version of football, like played indoors or something. So thank you Americans for making me realise that its just a bastardised spelling of football (in English!! Apparently this is the way they spell it in Spanish), lest they confuse themselves with their weird American version that looks more like rugby anyway.Ā

This Buzzfeed article does a great job of gathering some of the most potent social media postings about Zayn Malikās separation from One Direction. Some are funny, some are sad, some are really super dramatic.
But what arenāt funny are the comments on this article. In the comment section, older people and people who feel theyāre āaboveā the boy band, bash on the young girlsā reactions to Zaynās departing.
This is gross.
Okay, so yes. The world is not over. The apocalypse has not arrived. Death is not knocking on my door. But a very important figure in pop culture has just rocked the current face of entertainment.
Zayn Malik is one of the only Pakistani celebrities in all of Western pop culture. His presence in a popular boy band has been crucial and uplifting for many Muslims and people of color. The kid has an amazing voice and heās put up with a ridiculous amount of shit over the course of the last 5 years. The fact that he has left One Direction is not a throw-away, frivolous event, but something that has connotations and deeper meaning across our popular culture.
That is whatās happening today. And I donāt care if you feel sad about it. Itās very possible that you do not and will not feel the repercussions of this event. This, however, does not mean you should disrespect those who do.
Here is something for your consideration:
When a sports team loses or an athlete is traded, people cry. They cry, they get angry, they scream at their TVs. Sound familiar? The only difference between this picture:
And this one:
Or this picture:
And this:
Is the gender and age of the crying parties.
The reaction to Zaynās leaving One Direction is being laughed at, brushed off, and mocked because it is young girls who are presenting it. To dismiss the emotions of teenage girls is dangerous, antifeminist, and ignorant.
As for comments like this:
Sure, youāre right, Sara. They arenāt The Beatles. But they are The Beatles of our generation. They have roused the same enthusiasm, garnered the same fan base, and appealed to the same audience demographic as The Beatles did in their day.
To make the easy comparison, hereās a picture of The Beatlesā fans:
And hereās one of One Directionās fans:
One Direction is a band that has had a positive and lasting effect on many people, has brought together friendships, and has helped many young girls to feel beautiful and part of something important. Do not dismiss the emotions and reactions to this event just because of who theyāre coming from. No one is asking you to like or care about One Direction. Just donāt be a dick.
SUPPORT TEENAGE GIRLS. ARM TEENAGE GIRLS.
I was ticked this morning when I was in the car going to the store and on the radio the DJs were making fun of āall the teen girls crying over Zayn leaving One Direction.ā I quickly changed the channel it was so disgusting.
My mom and my sister and her friend were making fun of them and I was so mad I almost started hopping up and down.
Iām not even a fan of boybands but. Apparently reactions to Robbie Williams leaving Take That were similar to this? And Geri Halliwell leaving Spice Girls? I donāt think anyone has the right to talk about this reaction when our/their generation did theĀ same thing. (And by the by, some of those people are at the age to be in charge of the world now. Draw your own conclusions on how the world is okay/going to hell in a handbasket)
Look, if you have to make a really convoluted argument about internalised misogyny to prove why a gender-neutral joke is mysoginistic, then yes I 100% think youāre being too sensitive about it. I understand why people would think baking is a gender-specific thing, but it was a fucking icing joke. The pun is RIGHT THERE, people make jokes about it all the time targeting non-hockey fans (irrelevant of gender). Itās not really the NHL (twitterās) fault that a bunch of assholes on Twitter put ānon-hockey fansā and āfemaleā together in their minds. (Also slightly tangentially, thereās a lot to be said about the fact that fans have subscribed a male gender to the NHL Twitter). I've seen jokes of 'wouldn't date a non-hockey fan' floating around tumblr, and this is basically a variation on it. Iām usually all for being PC, but this is why I understand people getting so frustrated at the so-called āPC-policeā.
(For reference, this was the joke: heard āicingā, immediately thought cupcakes #myexin5words)

Q U E E N SĀ Ā» Natalie Portman Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā I want [female characters] to be allowed to be weak and strong and happy and sad ā human, basically. The fallacy in Hollywood is that if youāre making a āfeministā story, the woman kicks ass and wins. Thatās not feminist, thatās macho. A movie about a weak, vulnerable woman can be feminist if it shows a real person that we can empathize with.Ā
Exhibit 14764 of how I cannot tell Keira Knightly and Natalie Portman apart.
I totally thought it was KK until I read the caption.
