as someone who has been manifesting a prequel show with soldier boy & liberty since end of 2020 and actually having that manifestation come true to life, i am baffled by some people who believe its a retcon that soldier boy & liberty were lovers and him and crimson countess was the only real love relationship he had. and i find this to be absolute insane not just from modern dating standards but just how baffling it is that people think its weird that a man who live for over 100 years loved more than one woman.
i also find it funny that people actually believe that soldier boy and crimson countess were real lovers even tho there is enough lore in the show to suggest that it was always a pr relationship, always for the show. that he treated her poorly and she hated his ass. and when he does say he loved her, it comes with an entitlement that she was also supposed to love him and sooner she is burnt to crisp by him. with clara/liberty, we don't know enough about her side of relationship yet. this romantic relationship so far as we know it is heavily about soldier boy sanctifying her especially after finding out about her relationship with homelander. he is constantly haunted by clara's shadow but while we see in his eyes how much he loved her, he doesn't say anything until he is shocked to see the video of homelander & stormfront leading him to confront that love for her. and then he sees bombsight lose his powers for someone he loves & in the most fucked up way he decides to possibly end the world by doing what he believes his once lover would have done. his self loathing & his loneliness & his past mistakes gets to him. and he makes the most fucked up choices.
but i don't think the problem lies with the fact that she was the first woman he loved. the problem lies with the fact that she was a german nazi woman married to another man who also happened to be the one who injected both of them with the v1. i think the inherent discomfort lies with the fact that he fell in love with a nazi and now we are going to see a tv show with both characters in a romantic relationship
and i find it insane that people are somehow calling it a retcon instead of admitting that they are discomforted by this revelation. we always knew that they had a connection. like they both started herogasm for fucks sake. do you guys not see how freaky they must have been to do that? back in s4, they had pictures during the firecracker convention showing soldier boy + liberty being lovers as rumours
while you are discomforted, i am personally looking forward to see how toxic their relationship is. and i think the romance being so discomforting is exactly where the fun lies. we have these 2 awful characters who have decades of history with each other and somehow them being secret lovers is what i find so delicious. you are getting the opportunity to finally hate 2 main characters and you wanna miss out on that? i won't. i am personally rooting for them to get more evil as they progress.
you know what else i am looking forward to? i am looking forward to the historical references. from politics to pop culture of that era. c'mon we get references to the anti communist wave of the 50s, the post ww2 american exceptionalism, the rise in misogyny and racism as the men who went to war came back, the rise of toxic masculinity, the wars and how american propaganda worked. the rise of television and telephones. but most importantly to see how german nazism combined with american fascism as liberty and soldier boy become symbols of it. seeing the origins of an evil organisation that led to destroying countless lives by injecting babies on false promises and experimenting on poor innocent people often belonging from racial minorities.
its insane that people are not seeing the vision bc they are so mad about the show having a nazi as one of their main characters as if this franchise hasn't always been about awful to morally gray characters. i am infact even excited to see how different clara vought is to stormfront even tho she will always be the nazi bitch to me.
i want them to show the racism, the misogyny, the homophobia and everything else. i don't want them to dance around the very realities people lived through back in the 50s. the only thing i won't accept if its done purely bc of the shock factor and i hope the show takes modern sensibilities into account which imo the franchise mostly has if not always. ignoring those realities doesn't help anyone.
art is not always about people you can root for (even tho i believe we will surely see some characters fighting against vought) and its not always about giving you comfort. sometimes art is meant to make you uncomfortable and to provoke you and evoke emotions. feel them instead of just deciding that the show is bad bc it has awful characters.
