Passing thought about Cinderbrush: between Jamie telling Cameron âI almost miss thisâ in the lunchroom, and the conversation with Aff âwell, I suppose I have changed quite a bit, thatâs fairââŚ
I have this vague suspicion that, Freshman year or so, Jamie could easily have been one of the popular kids. And why not? Theyâve got a sharp wit and theyâre very, very good at collecting secrets and reading people. 13- or 14-year-old Jamie, before the goth wardrobe and the hexes and the pronoun change, before the divorce, up to their (up to his, everyone assumed, because why not assume?) neck in the same playing and politcking and manipulating that Sashaâs still doing now, that they claim to almost, not quite, miss.
And now Jamie sits in a corner and does business with everybody who can pay, and Sasha asks peoplesâ pronouns when they start going to this school in the middle of nowhere in Arizona, and we never actually did find out what the mysterious circumstances were when Lexie stopped being Sashaâs rival and became her minion.Â
It makes sense, too, with Cameronâwho maybe didnât just haphazardly fall in with the Weird Dark Kid this past awful summer. Maybe Cameron started talking again to someone who was once a friend and then fell to weirdness, just like Cam was feeling himself fall to weirdness.
(Thereâs so much backstory for these kids that we just donât know! The one-shot was so short! When did AF become a werewolf? Was it before or after the divorce, the raging outburst in the courtroom, were they always furious or was that new? An easily-forgotten animal encounter during summer camp before Freshman year, in between canoes and boys? Is it new and recent, a supernatural response to all the rage theyâve had all this time?)
(And whatâs up with Cameronâs parents, and whatâs up with Sashaâs parents, and do ANY of these children have siblings or have they ever, and how DID Sasha win Lexie over to her side, and how did Cameron meet this infernal demon in the first place, andâŚI have so many questions.)
Anyway. We need more Talks Machina post-mortems of oneshots, man, we never get enough chatter about them in the aftermath.
