*1 éŤ (high; tall) and çł (cake) are homophones, so we eat rice cake to symbolise âhigherâ yield of luck/success in the coming year, or well-wishes (particularly for children) to grow taller/stronger.
*2 Red envelopes are usually only given by adults who are married. Hualian are married <3
*3 ĺĺ˛éą [yÄ suĂŹ qiĂĄn] means âmoney to suppress Sui (demon).â The legend goes that a demon named Sui (age; time; year) came to terrorise children while they slept. Putting coins in red pockets under their pillows scared the demon away. From then on, giving red envelopes became a way to keep children safe and bring good luck.
*4 çłčŤčŚ traditionally is a snack made of Chinese hawthorn coated with malt sugar, skewered on a bamboo stick. Now, itâs made with all kinds of fresh fruits.
