âWhyâs Shen at Melâs heels like some lovesick puppy?â
Dana looks up from her ubiquitous clipboard and stares Frank down over the top of her glasses. âYouâre one to talk, lover boy.â
âI donât know what youâre talking about.â He fidgets with his half-empty can of Red Bull, waiting anxiously for the rest of the night shift to arrive so that he can go home andâŚdo what, exactly? Itâs not his week with the kids; all he has to look forward to is a divorced-dad-chic apartment close to the Pitt.
âMhm.â Dana turns her attention back to her clipboard, and Frank knows heâs been dismissed.Â
He spots Mel walking toward the lockers and hurries to meet her, glad that Shen is now nowhere to be seen. âHey, Mel, wait up! Do you need a ride?â
She turns and gives him a wide smile. âThatâd be great, thank you, Dr. Langdon!â

"den Umständen entsprechend" is one of my favourite german phrases of all time. Ich sag dir nicht was die Umstände sind, wenn du die nicht kennst ist das dein Problem. ultimate boss of nuance. "it is what it is" but 10 times more german. Ich geh mich jetzt den Umständen ersprechend aus dem Fenster werfen
Suzanne Collins saw enemies to lovers, said fuck that, then gave us one sided beef to allies to fake dating to fake marriage to fake pregnancy to codependency to forced one sided beef to real pregnancy (twice)
Mel has absolutely no right to feel as territorial as she does right now.
Still, she finds herself skulking at the nurseâs station, not-so-surreptitiously watching one of the new MS4s talk to Dr. Langdon. No, not talkâflirt with him. Melâs not confident in her people-reading skills at the best of times, but even she can tell when someoneâs trying to flirt with her best friend.
She tries to look nonchalant when Dr. Langdon looks over and spots her. âMel! Just the person I was looking for. I was just telling Sophie here how we set a new record for a STEMI on your first day.â
Mel canât help but preen, and for two good reasons. First, itâs touching that he still remembers that even with everything else that happened during her first shift at the Pitt. Second, the MS4âs name is Sophia, not Sophie. She doesnât point this out though. The MS4âs dejected face does it for her, but itâs not like Dr. Langdon notices.Â
âAnd I was just telling Dr. Langdon that Iâd love to try and beat it,â Sophia says. She looks like a supermodel, what with her perfectly-fitting FIGS scrubs and pristine Hokas. Mel wonders if Garciaâs given her the nickname of âER Barbieâ yet.
Dana butts in before either of them can respond. âMedic 4 is two minutes out with a sixty-year-old male. Heâs presenting with active, crushing chest pain. I need Trauma 2 prepped immediately. Langdon, youâre up.â
He immediately locks eyes with Mel. âSTEMI with me, Mel?â The corner of his mouth quirks up, and Mel gets a funny feeling in her stomach.Â
âRight behind you,â she says, accepting the pair of size-small gloves he hands her. They hurry off in the direction of the ambulance bay, leaving Sophia standing next to Dana, looking dejected.Â
Mel just thinks to herself, You know what they say. Twoâs company, threeâs a crowd!

Mel never thought sheâd go wedding dress shopping with her fianceâs ex-wife.
In fact, she never thought sheâd go wedding dress shopping, period. Ever since her mother died, Mel had pushed all thoughts of romance and relationships to the side to focus on finishing undergrad, then med school, and then residency.
She doesnât have many days off at the moment, as she and Frank have planned a two-week honeymoon soon after the wedding, so Mel is heartbroken when Becca tells her sheâd rather stay at Middle Hill for her weekly pottery class than watch Mel try on dresses all afternoon. Frankâs suggestion that she invite his ex-wife along had stunned her.
âWhy not?â Frank had said with a shrug. âIâm sure Penny would love to come along too, maybe she can try on some flower girl dresses.â
So, after an initially awkward conversation with Abby when sheâd come by to drop off the kids for the week, Mel, Abby, and Penny were at a small bridal boutique in the suburbs of Pittsburgh. Mel had never spent time with Abby without Frank present, but Pennyâs presence helped. It turned out that Abby was honored to be included, especially, as she put it, she âprobably wouldnât have another chance until Penny was old enough to marry.â
âAnd I hope thatâll be far in the future,â Abby says, taking a sip of her mimosa. Mel holds her flute of orange juice awkwardly as she watches the graceful redhead sift through the racks and racks of white dresses. She turns and looks at Mel, scrutinizing her. âWhat style did you want to try first?â
Mel freezes. âUh, I hadnât really thought about it.â
âHmm.â Abby throws back the rest of her mimosa and hands the empty glass to Mel. âI think I know what would look good on you.â She waves over a sales associate. âCan I get some help pulling dresses?â
To Abbyâs credit, sheâs quite patient and doesnât get offended when Mel doesnât like a dress. Mel dutifully tries on every dress that Abby pulls, but she doesnât even have to attempt to come up with a nice thing to say about them. Abby takes one look at them on her, and shakes her head.Â
After trying on ten dresses and loving none of them, Mel is ready to call it quits. Penny, who had gotten bored sometime between the sixth and seventh dress, comes running with a garment bag trailing behind her, a panicked employee close behind. âMel-Mel! I think you should try this one.â
She doesnât have the highest hopes, but Mel agrees anyway. The silk is cool against her skin, and the dress is the perfect length, stopping just above her ankles. She likes that she wonât have to worry about tripping on the train as she walks down the aisle.
Abby nods in approval when Mel steps out of the fitting room. âThatâs it. Thatâs the one.â

itâs july 14th that means mel and langdon have been working together properly for nearly two whole weeks like can you even imagine how weird they are about each other now like
being too warm during the day: well, this sucks, but this temperature makes sense because the sun is up, and the sun is making me warm. i am unhappy but logically i can deal with it for now.
being too warm at night: what if i kill everybody.
âWhat do you mean, youâve never had a birthday cake?!â
At first, Frank assumes Santos is talking to Whitakerâfrom the tidbits heâs shared about his childhood in Nebraska, it really wouldnât surprise him if the kid has never had a birthday cake.Â
He freezes, can of Redbull halfway to his lips, when the subject of Santosâ pestering replies. âI still celebrated my birthday, itâs just that Becca doesnât like cake. She thinks itâs too dry. We always have underbaked brownies instead.â
He doesnât say anything to Mel directly, but Frank slips a lopsided cake with bright yellow frosting into her locker the morning of February 4th. Tanner and Penny helped, of course.

thereâs very few things that drive me up the wall in fandom as much as this weird new assumption that fandom is primarily a space for younger people that older folks are only accepted into in a trial basis if they promise to centralize and accommodate younger fans, and further, anything else is creepy and predatory. ITâS OKAY FOR ADULTS TO PRODUCE CONTENT FOR OTHER ADULTS.
if I have to read âwomen in their 30sâ used as an insult one more time I swear Iâll - step away from that user and just hang out with the other grownups who consistently create good content because Iâm also an adult and too busy comparing car insurance to fight with teenagers on the internet, but goddAMMIT Iâll be annoyed

âIt seems to me like youâve just traded one addiction for another,â Santos says as she sidles up next to Frank outside of the shitty dive bar theyâre at for Javadiâs 21st birthday.
Itâd taken a lot of finagling (and some blackmail) on Princess and Perlahâs part to get him to come along, despite his rebuttal that he was newly sober, and shouldnât they be more considerate of this?
Perlah had just muttered something in Tagalog, causing Santos to snort, and, well, here he is now.
Frank takes a drag. âNicotine isnât a controlled substance,â he says. He and Santos arenât exactly friends, per se, but they are friendlier than they were when he came back to the Pitt. Part of the issue is that theyâre more alike than either of them would like to admit.
âMelancholy doesnât look so melancholy anymore,â Santos points out. She makes a grabby motion for Frankâs cigarette, which he pointedly ignores.Â
He ignores her comment as well.Â
âWho knew Shen was such a good dancer?â She reaches over and plucks the cigarette out of Frankâs hand.
Frank stays silent. He doesnât want to think about Shen right now, and definitely not about how the annoying attending has been glued to Melâs side all night. He knows deep down that if he asked Mel to dance in that dank dive bar, sheâd say yes, no questions asked. Theyâd arrived at the bar together, both having just gotten off of the day shift, and while Frankâd been working up the courage to buy Mel a ginger ale, Shenâd walked over and swept her away.
Santos finishes Frankâs cigarette and blows the smoke in his face. âI wasnât talking about the nicotine, by the way.â
âI know,â Frank responds. Sheâs already gone.
