Some illustrations from a few new Russian childrenās book versions of Les Mis that I picked up when I was in Moscow recently. Ā More like, these were two separate books by the same illustrator, meant to show two different ākid-friendlyā(?) parts of Les Mis, aptly titledĀ āCosetteā (āŠŠ¾Š·ŠµŃŃŠ°ā) andĀ āGavrocheā (āŠŠ°Š²ŃоŃā).
This seems to be a thing for childrenās book versions of Les Mis in Europe, focusing on the child Cosette arc and the Gavroche arc⦠ Of course, we already know Russia has a fondness for Gavroche (see multiple crazy Soviet film versions named after himā¦), but they also love to give the gift of Gavroche to their little darlings, and so do the French, for that matter. Ā In addition to this āGavrocheā book, I also found another Russian version of the same, also titled āGavrocheā and containing pretty much the same parts of the bookālikewise, I have a very similar Gavroche-centered kidsā book from France. Ā I guess kids like to read about the adventures of other kids, but, umā¦do kids really want to read about the horrible abuse of other kids (āCosetteā) or the horrible violent deaths of other kids (āGavrocheā)ā¦? Ā The other Russian āGavrocheā kidsā book specifically informs me, the discerning āparent,ā that it is intended for children ages ā0+.ā Ā
Is that, like, infants and up? Ā I mean, the dropped basket of cartridges is right there next to the age recommendation⦠Also, I should indicate that this is the same book that ends with this lovely image, for your toddlersā viewing pleasure:
Okay, then. Ā :/
On a more positive note! Ā I did really like the watercolor style used for these two books, so I thought Iād share with you guys. Ā Russians have a great talent and tradition for childrenās book illustrations, and Iām glad theyāre also applying those talents to the literary genius ofĀ āŠ. ŠŃго.ā Ā Now if only I could get them to do some cool childrenās books of War and Peace, sigh. Ā Is Tolstoy really so sacred that we canāt let the kiddies have him, guysā¦?
These books are illustrated by Anatoly Itkin (2017 edition).
This actually goes rather well with the general direction of russian childrenās literature - at least for what is viewed as such by the education system. Like, I remember that my mandatory reading list for when I was 7-12 years old was pretty much all about children being horribly abused and then dying horrible deaths. Seriously, Cosette and Gavroche had it easy compared to some of the characters from those stories.Ā
Those stories havenāt really been written _for_ children, they are supposed to show social injustice and all that stuff, and suffering children are there to emphasise the idea, I guess. But it seems that people who make school programs in Russia these days are confident that if youāre a kid, you should read any story about a kid your age, and youāll be fine.Ā
Before Boyd could reply, Ryan leaned forward and pulled him into a hug. Boyd couldnāt help a large smile of his own as he returned the hug. Ryan was skinner and bonier than he remembered but it felt good nonetheless.
āIām really glad you came,ā Ryan admitted quietly against Boydās ear.Ā āThank you.āĀ
IāM CONVINCED THAT THIS IS LITERALLY EMILIO VEGA ON AN UNDERCOVER MISSION OF SOME SORT.
