There are few things in this world that would alarm Scott Carpenter Tracy during down time on the island. When heâs not doing checks on the Thunderbirds to make sure theyâre all in perfect condition, when heâs not training, or checking in with John to see whether they need to be on standby.
The most alarming things heâs ever heard, though, are anything that involves Langstrom Fishler, the time that EOS had impersonated John and nearly killed him, and Alan sayingâŚ
âAre you sure this is a good idea?â
Scottâs ears pricked up the moment he heard Alanâs whispered voice as he made his way to the kitchen.
âOf course it is! Donât be such a worry wart, theyâll love it!â
Scott brought his right hand up to his eyes and shook his head. Gordon. Heâs inclined to go see what on earth they are both up to, but heâs also astutely aware that they will clam up and not say a word to him about it. Itâs probably best to ask John or Brains to check in and see what it is theyâre up to.
Nontheless, Scott needed his coffee, so he made a point of all but slamming his feet on the ground every step he took. Is it a bit much? Maybe, but gives them fair warning.
He finally saw his youngest brothers as he reached the bottom of the stairs, sat together leaning over something. Neither of them acknowledged Scott as he emerged.
âHey, what are you both up to?â he says, and the troublesome two turn back to face him.

We have such a lovely community, and itâs amazing how we still have an ongoing engagement and discourse about these Tracy boys and their found family. And we have a wealth of content between TOS, the movie, and TAG that I find our TB library quite robust.Â
One effort I wanted to make back in the fandom was to start going back through old AO3 and FF stories that I read when I was in my lurking years and review them - then I thought, hey, it might be good to help to spread some re-engagement of these fics.Â
I would post links, and would hope we could help spread some love to the author. Encourage any thoughts to be shared over reviews instead of through tumblr.Â
Is this something the Thunderfam would be interested in? Whether also reccâing on Fridays and/or open to having your works linked?Â
MIssion of TBFicRecFriday: To re-circulate our favorite fics and give the author some love for their amazing work.Â
Rules:
1)Â Reblogging is welcome, but if you have the inclination to add a comment or join the conversation, please share instead with the author via reviews, favorites, bookmarks, or etc.Â
2) Do not share snippets of the work without permission from the author. Please provide general notes for any trigger warnings, and the key pieces for what to expect from the story and share links directly.

Notes from Gavii: This one was in my favorites list, and I have come back to it quite a few times over the years. In a world of super high tech and crazy advancements we can only dream of, this teen!Tracys fic has always felt incredibly grounding with a life threatening situation that feels a bit all too real and likely to occur. Recommending for any Earth&Sky fans and Virgil fans, and Jeff fans.
Maybe some light whump.Â
With thanks to @gumnut-logic and @tsarinatorment for the read-throughs and the chats.
.
Jeff stared out of the window of his office. He should really be listening to the man on the vidcomm, but today the sky was crystal blue, he could faintly hear his children playing around the pool through the open window.
It wasnât usual for him to get distracted from business these days. But heâd missed the last eight months of his boys life by being absorbed in it and he was trying to find the balance. Heâd always been a workaholic, his wifeâŚhis wife had been understanding. But his Lucy was not with them anymore.
âCan I count on your support for this business idea?â The question jerked his attention to the man before him. He hadnât been listening, and he found he had no idea what the business idea was, let alone if he was going to support it.
Just as he opened his mouth to answer, Virgil burst through the door. Jeff frowned. His children knew better than to interrupt him, so something was wrong. A glance and his second-born sonâs face confirmed.
âDad! Dad! Come quick, itâs Scott!â Jeff quickly cut the call and rushed out.
Scott was curled up on his side, hands clenching his chest and gasping for breath. The panic on the eleven-year-oldâs face was clear. Gordon had obviously fished his brother out of the pool, for the boys were soaking, and both youngest were currently being comforted by John.
He knelt down, hands soothing over Scottâs back offering what comfort he could. âVirgil, I want you to call your Grandma, get her on the line and weâll see whatâs going on.â Virgil, white-faced, nodded and sped off. âJohn, take your brothers inside and get them a drink please.â John nodded and ushered Gordon and Alan inside.
âScotty, Scott, can you talk to me?â His sonâs breathing was harsh and fast, and he was beginning to hyperventilate. âScooter, you need to calm down, son. Deep breath in, hold it slightly and then out again. Thatâs it, and again. Keep going. Youâre doing well.â
Scott was beginning to calm down, the rhythmic tone of his fatherâs voice helping him to regulate his breathing. By the time that Virgil returned with their Grandmother on the vidcomm he was almost back to normal. But he was still scrunched up on himself.
âMa, thank god,â Jeff said, relieved because he knew his Mom would be able to help far more. He stayed on the ground, still rubbing Scottâs back, as she asked questions to try and establish what was going on.
âScotty, take your time, but I want you to explain the pain to me.â Her tone was kind, encouraging, and Scott tried hard to describe the pain in between gasps
âHurts. Mâback. Like mâribs trying to get out of mâback.â
âOk Scotty, ok. You did good. Keep breathing.â She gestured to Virgil to come and sit with his brother, and he took over from Jeff and handed his Dad the comm.
âJeff, I want you to give him one of his sedative shots. I need to be there to work out whatâs going on and Iâm already on my way. Call the airfield and ensure there is a jet ready for me.â Jeff nodded and disappeared into the infirmary. His Ma kept them well-stocked, since the island was so far away from help, and each of his boys had medication prepped in case of an emergency such as this.
Praying that his son wouldnât need a trip to the mainland for this, he cleaned Scottâs arm and injected the contents. Normally fearful of needles, Scott was so out of it that he didnât offer a murmur, and Jeff sat beside him as he quickly succumbed to the drug.
He gently picked Scott up and carried him to the infirmary, where he hooked him up to the Medscanner. Leaving him with Virgil so he could check on the others, Jeff was pleased to see that John had made drinks and laid out snacks, and Alan and Gordon were deep into an old Disney movie.
Jeff bent over and ruffled Johnâs hair. The boyâs turquoise eyes regarded him, and Jeff smiled. John took that as confirmation that his brother was alright â for now at least â and returned his attention to his younger brothers.
Sally knew that Jeff would have everything thing ready. It was the fastest sheâd managed to get to the airfield, and sure enough Jeffâs jet was ready for her. The journey would still take a few hours at full throttle, but she should hopefully arrive as Scott came round.
As the plane flew on autopilot over the ocean, Sally went over her notebooks and her memories.
When Lucy and Jeff found out they were expecting Scott, they had sat down with her and Grant for a serious chat. Fearful that she was about to be told that the baby would be born with health issues, Sally had spent the twenty-four hours before the meeting researching everything that she could think of about genetic conditions and health complications.
Then Lucy had shown her in-laws just what the complication could be.
It had blown Sallyâs mind. Of course, sheâd treated Aveâs before. Injuries to shoulders and arms and wings were common in her line of work â where the Ave would usually end up after a beatingâŚor worse. She knew the history, everyone did, of how Aveâs came into existence. But sheâd never known one before.
Lucyâs wings took her breath away. Snowy white with silver flecks, the silver of her Mark, the way she dropped her shoulders before the wings appeared. It was all just so beautiful. Grant had been just as speechless. And when they noticed the fear in their daughterâs eyes, they both reassured her that they would never tell.
Sally spent the next few years learning everything she could about Ave medicine and history. She would spent hours with Lucy, talking and researching. And when Scott then Virgil and then John was born with the faintest outline over their backs, they knew theyâd inherited Lucyâs genes. Sally became the medical expert for her family. Hospitals were too risky for any Ave, but Sally had connections. Until they had moved to the island, whenever they boys needed the hospital she was there to be the medic, and her reputation allowed this unusual practice.
And one of the things that Lucy and she had discussed was when the boys reached puberty and how that would be the trigger for their wings to appear. The detail of the pain experienced as the ribs and shoulders minutely moved to make lifting viable, as muscles learnt to deal with the added real weight and how she had to get used to the sensation of releasing her wings. How if not taught correctly accidents would happen and create possible future issues with flying.
Ah! There it was. Sally had found the place where Lucy had set out how to teach the boys to lift for the first time, and she was so thankful that she had. No-one could have envisioned that Lucy would be gone before her boys reached that stage of their lives.
As soon as Scott had described his symptoms Sally had known. She had known that it was coming, sure, but she had hoped that they would have a little more time. Now there was no more time, and she spent the last half-hour before sheâd need to take control sorting out her estate.
Jeff and her boys would need her on hand from now on. Heâd asked her to move over with them before, but Grant couldnât leave the farm. After the accident sheâd offered to come out, but this time it was Jeff who refused, her son being determined somehow that they were alright. Of course they werenât, not at all, but they were now getting there.
Jeff watched his mother land the jet with pride. She still had it. He and John had come out to meet her. It was late evening now, and the two youngest were asleep, despite protesting that they werenât tired. Virgil was sitting with Scott, who had begun to stir.
They embraced briefly, and Sally reached up to cup Jeffâs cheek. She smiled, and Jeff immediately relaxed. Mom was here. And she wasted no time bustling down to the infirmary where she found herself suddenly full of grandson clinging tightly.
âVirgil, Son. Itâs alright now,â his dad said as his grandma returned his hug and moved on to see Scott. He latched on to his Dadâs side and watched with John as Sally bustled about the bed.
Scott, while conscious, wasnât fully aware, his eyes showing some level of confusion. He hadnât said anything while they had been waiting, but now he tried to speak.
âGrandma?â His voice was scratchy and his throat was dry. She reached over and patted his cheek and held up a beaker with a straw. Scott drank slowly, trying and failing to work out what had happened to put him here.
âHow are you feeling, Scott?â How was he feeling? ErâŚwell, there was an ache in his upper back and chest, but apart from not understanding anything that was going on, he wasâŚwait. Heâd been having trouble breathing. He stared at his Grandma, hoping she had the answers.
Sally saw the moment Scott recalled what had happened earlier, and she reached out to hold his face in her hands. She smiled encouragingly. âThatâs it, Scotty. Focus and breathe. Youâre going to be fine, sweetheart.â And he relaxed much the same as his father had done not that long ago.
Scott soon drifted off, and Sally ushered the three remaining Tracyâs out of the room. Virgil protested at leaving his brother alone, but his Grandmother gave him the Look and he soon stopped.
âWe need to talk about whatâs happening to your brother, and Scott needs his sleep. So, while I make us all a nice hot chocolate, John you can get the cups ready, Virgil you can get some cookies out and Jeff I think you need a shot of whisky.â They all busied themselves with their tasks and in next to no time they were ready.
For the next half an hour Sally filled them all in on what Scott was going through, was going to go through, over the next few hours. How she was going to help him. How Virgil and John would need to know since they would also go through it, although with better preparation, they would hopefully not have half as much pain or panic as Scott had. She answered their questions as best she could.
Then they headed back down to the infirmary where, just as Sally thought, Scott was awake and far more alert. Sally took a seat beside him and proceeded to have the same conversation with him, but with more detail.
âYour Mom explained to me that the first 24-48 hours of your wings manifesting were usually very painful for Aveâs that had no-one to help or explain what they were going through.
âYour shoulder bones and muscles are adjusting, along with your ribcage. Within the next few hours your wings should appear once we teach you how to release your Mark. How does that all sound, Scotty?â
How did it sound? Scott was terrified. No one was around anymore that understood what he was going through, and although his Grandma sounded like she knew what she was talking about, there was that wild thought that he was alone in this.
Sally could see Scott beginning to spiral in fear as she explained, and she couldnât blame him for being afraid. She removed one hand from his cheek and grasped his hand tightly. She was gratified when Scott squeezed back.
âI know itâs scary, sweetheart, but weâre all here for you. And your Mom taught me well. Iâm not leaving you, Scotty, not at all. Iâm going to be here, for you. Do you understand?â Scott nodded, and his breathing eased.
The next hour or so Sally went over with the four of them how Lucy had shown her they would need to learn to drop their shoulders to release their wings. The first time that Scott did it correctly he sighed in relief, it had actually relieved some of the pressure he was feeling in his chest and back.
By this time it was getting on to midnight, and they all were flagging. Sally sent them all to bed, showing no surprise whatsoever when the three boys all crashed in Scottâs room. Jeff smiled at his Mom and that smile widened to a grin when she patted his cheek just as she had done to Scott before they too retired for the night.
Alan woke everyone up early, as usual. The toddler had boundless energy, reminding Sally of a certain older brother who refused to sleep past 5:30 in the morning⌠Scott was obviously ready for this, being awake and up, and having a beaker of juice ready for his baby brother. Sally marvelled as she watched Scott handle first Alan and then Gordon long before their father appeared in time for breakfast.
Scott was having to fend off questions from the terrible two, who wanted their own reassurances that their eldest brother was really alright. By this time everyone was gathered for breakfast, and Scott promised that after everyone had eaten he would show Gordon and Alan what he had been taught.
Waffles and pancakes eaten, Scott found he was being dragged out to the pool area by two very determined brothers, and the rest of the family followed along to watch, and keep an eye on, what was going on.
Once he had told them what he was going to do, he turned so that they could see his back, and he moved his shoulders back and down as he had practiced all night. And to everyoneâs shock and delight, a pair of wings appeared.
Silver with flecks of blue.
Eagle-shaped.
Scott, without any conscious thought, flapped his wings. It took several attempts, but finally he was able to lift off the ground. By lunchtime he was flying around the pool, his brothers chasing him.
Jeff turned to his mother. âThere will be no holding that boy back now, Ma,â he murmured. Sally nodded in agreement as Scott managed to fly up to the roof of the villa to much cheering, then swooped down low over the pool, causing an unwary Gordon to fall back into it. Scott looped up again.
Five times his family needed Virgilâs heavy lifting muscles and one time he needed theirs.
These are for @katblu42ââââ who sent me a Fandomversary Ask.
No idea whether this is any good, proofed only by me, I hope you enjoy it anyway.
-o-o-o-
âŚone time Virgil needed his brothersâ heavy lifting muscles.
He lay down on an old towel tossed on the sand. The cotton was warm from being in the sun, but here under the pohutukawa tree at the very edge of the beach, he was shaded and cool.
The sand was soft under his hand and he absently rubbed grains between his fingertips.
At the edge of the caldera, the ripples of the lagoon lapped at the beach. Small waves attempting to clamber up the slope and ever failing.
He stared at them.
Movement at the corner of his eye had him turning his head, just a little to see a hermit crab stumbling awkwardly over sea detritus not two feet away.
It provided focus for his tired mind. He watched each leg as it chose a purchase and attempted to grip seaweed, sometimes failing, but mostly advancing its trek across the beach.
Its rhythms gave him peace and calm.
He could say it had been a long day, but it had in fact been a long night with a stinking factory fire, and what little sleep he had managed had been haunted by the failures in the early hours of the morning.
It wasnât a new thing. Their isolation and position on the globe guaranteed that a good percentage of their callouts occurred at night.

âBunny â green, growing, happily photosynthesising by his bed â is a much needed contrast to the void outside the window. On days that John is too distracted by the work, and the green and blue marble of the Earth is too far away for it to feel like a real place, the little life of the cactus reminds him that heâs not the only person in the universe.â
The wonderful @such-a-random-rambler wrote me a lil fic [LINK] for my birthday featuring my two favorite things: John and tiny plants. I figured that little Bunny the cacti would be NOT SO LITTLE by now, so hereâs John and his big baby. Drew this at work without my photoshop brushes which was fun but TRICKY so -\o/-
Saturday 17 July 2021 is my three years Thunderbirds Fandomversary. On Saturday, three years ago, I posted my first fic in this fandom No-one is Losing Their Dad Today.
As I have done in the previous two years, I am celebrating. However, this year marks a few extra milestones:
I recently passed 200 Thunderbirds works on Ao3
I recently clocked up over one million words written solely for Thunderbirds on Ao3.
I will admit that Iâm a little bit chuffed at that :D Who wouldâve thought an absent-minded, easily distracted nut-job like me could manage that? There has been a lot of self examination and arguments with the muse to finish fics in the last three years. Admittedly, some of those fics in that 200 are not complete :( But most of them are and Iâm going with that. :P
So to celebrate all of the above, as with previous years, Iâm offering ficlets! Letâs up those numbers even more :D
Send me an ask (so I can keep track):
with a character and a single word challenge
and, optionally, if you prefer one of my AUs, throw that in as well.
I will put a disclaimer here, because you know me - I have little control over my muse. I will do my best, but I reserve the right to throw my hands up in the air and glare at characters who misbehave, plotlines that wonât work and a muse that is a rebellious little shit. Please do not be offended if your prompt doesnât get done.
2020â˛s Fandomversary fic haul included:
Lucky Shot - Gordon and nosebleed
Different - John and dancing
That Musical Voice - Virgil and struggle
Test Flight - Scott and butterflies
Reactions - Gordon and bedlam (over 30,000 words is not a ficlet!)
Cat Tracy - Scott and cat
Who do you save, John? - shopping and any Tracy bro (neither is 16,000 words!)
Tiptoe - Virgil and tiptoe
2019â˛s Fandomversary fic haul included:
Big Ass - John and gravity
Freckles - Alan and family (a favourite of mine :D)
Green Dragonstone - Brains and pancakes (V/K)
Ben - Virgil/Brains and first kiss
Lost in Space - Scott and space (Scott/Em)
His Little Red Haired Daughter - John and blood
Virgil and the Last Straw - Virgil and the last straw
Bagel - John and âŚâŚ (the word was a spoiler so read the fic first)
Flying True - Scott and âstay goldâ
Ostinato - Any brother riding the space elevator asleep (Sotto Voce AU)
As you can see, sometimes the term âficletâ gets warped. I will try again this year to stop that from happening as I have Callisto up my sleeve.
Speaking of whichâŚI have decided that in order to run Fandomversary, I will need to put Callisto on hold for about five weeks - a month for Fandomversary and an extra week for Virgilâs birthday :D Apologies for the delay, but Iâm hoping that by giving myself permission to put it down for a little bit, I can better pick it back up next month - I was starting to flag thanks to the Steampunk AU, so Iâm thinking a break might be good idea before it starts becoming a chore.
But anyway, Fandomversary is now open, send me an ask and I will see what I can come up with.
Nutty
(Hopefully a bit of a thank you to all the wonderful peeps in Thunderfam who have supported me ever so much and enabled me to be able to write all those words and kept my focus on the Tracy boys. You donât realise just how much you all mean to me ::hugs you all ever so much:: )

Hhm tidy the house or Jeff in a silly hat...yeps that's my afternoon sorted :) Although I have no idea what slacks are. Also have not seen much TOS but am getting the feeling he's probably a socks & sandals kinda guy. Eek.
for @tagminibangâ I got together with the awesomely talented @scattergraphâ to create a little fluff piece exploring the relationship between Gordon and Virgil and how they always have each others backs. Gordon is not known as Virgilâs wingman for no reason. I did the words, and @scattergraphâ did the most adorable illustrations! so without any further delays I present to you: Wingman.Â
Everybody check out this amazing story from the fabulous @psychoseal !!! Thank you @tagminibang we had lots of fun making this one & big thank you also to those who have read & left such lovely comments :)

Today I am watching ESC but first I needed to sketch this idea that was floating around my head ever since @olliepig and I plotted more or less a whole Regency!AU together the other weekâŚÂ
to lovely humans who were excluded from invitations, left behind when they tied their shoes, forced to walk in the grass when the sidewalk was full, spoken over when you tried to contribute, whispered about or laughed at, given the side eye when you tried to fit in... you are so worthy of love and Iâm sorry people have convinced you otherwise. I promise that your people are out there - people who will see the side of you others ignore, people who share weird inside jokes with you, give you affectionate nicknames and go to museums or roadtrips with you and fulfil whatever idea of friendship youâve always fantasized about. even if you feel like an empty shell of your former self because youâve hidden yourself away due to shame, this exterior will melt when you accept yourself or let people in and youâll realize there was nothing wrong with you all along. you have interesting things to say, you deserve new chances and beginnings, your heart is probably made of gold because you know what itâs like to be left out in the cold, and you have so much to give. you are so worthy and someoneâs idea of a friend too, and I hope you receive lots of hugs in the future from yourself and others because youâre so lovable.
