hello and thank you for this!! if this is what's going on in your life right now, i'm so proud of you for striving and making it to college soon! whether or not you are, it's not something to define your life or value but if you are proud of it, say it loud! this prompt is gonna be more specifically for if s/i is moving to college hours away or another state, so i'm sorry if that's too specific!

imagine that you're sifting through everything in your room again, with a few random piles you've assigned for keeps, take-with-you's and trash. there's a little head popping in and out of your doorway, but it's all that's been happening for the past ten minutes, so you don't let it distract you much. until it grows a little body and runs into your room.

your kid f/o(s) take stuff from the piles you've made and look at them, or even take them because if you don't have this item, you'll never finish packing and if you never finish packing you'll never leave! it was something that you weren't going to take with you anyway, though, so that plan falls flat.

after watching you pack for so long (you just started), they get noticeably mad and storm around the room. they ask you why you need all this stuff. they ask you why you couldn't just do it here. they ask you why you need to go. a full tantrum almost builds up, but you sit down on your bed and watch them.

their fuss freezes now that they finally have your attention. especially because you actually have answers. you need this stuff to live comfortably in the area closer to campus, you can't go to school from where you now, and you just need to go. you tell them you won't be far. if you will be far, you will call every week. you'll visit and you can do whatever they want together when you get back. you'll bring things back for them. school won't last forever, it will just feel that way.

something calms within them, but that doesn't mean it doesn't hurt still. they crawl onto your bed and sit with you wordlessly. you know that they hear you and don't want to accept it. all you can do is answer these questions a million times over and hug them through it until you can't.

your f/o isn't self-confident, not really.

they try to hide it, no matter how close you may be to them. they're used to hiding their insecurities under a loud personality and a stubborn attitude, a carefully crafted persona they've built up for ages or possibly their whole life, in an effort to keep even their closest companions at arms reach — living a lie.

they don't want others to see them at their most vulnerable. they don't want to be seen as weak. but you know.

you see them. you see things others don't. you see the way they feel the need to insert themself into every situation, pushing to be the loudest voice, striving to be the best at everything, refusing to be cast aside... and you've seen the tears they shed when they think they're alone, when they're oftentimes working late into the night thinking maybe if i keep pushing myself i'll finally be enough to someone.

although you don't know everything going on in their head, you're still such a valuable part of your f/o's life. they're eternally grateful for your company, your unconditional love and care, the thoughtful conversations you share in private, the way you remember details about them they didn't think anyone would care to. they're so used to being disregarded that being loved in this way, making them feel so special, only makes them feel more desperate to just collapse into your arms and let everything spill out.

but you won't force them to tell you anything. all that matters is that while your f/o may continue to experience hardships in life, they know they now have a safe space away from the constant stress, and they will go to you when they're ready.

imagine being there for your f/o during difficult times. when they're at their worst, when they're acting "ugly," and when they feel everyone around them would be put off and reject them.
