i know for certain i've touched on this before, but reading the script of the spuffy basement scene in never leave me (and ofc actually watching the scene) is truly a gut-wrenching experience.
AND SOMETHING I FIND REALLY FASCINATING ABOUT DOING THESE TWO THINGS (reading the script and watching the finished scene) IS HOW DIFFERENT THEY ARE—different lines. different directions. different blocking. different subject emphasis.
Yes, they removed the idea that he was able to do good without having a soul.
But it's stupid that they removed it. Because they already showed it. Their storyline is about that, even small acts of kindness were done because he knew it will be good, even how he was interacting with all of them, it's not exactly a demon it's more like a sassy guy. Or like he was protecting Dawn when Buffy didn't see it even, because he knew what is good and what is bad and he chose to do the latter. And his biggest decision when he decided to fight for his soul is about that. A demon decided that he needs a soul. It's like the opposite of the devil. We know that lusifer was an angel at the beginning but chose evil, he was corrupted by his own ideas and thoughts. It's about that nth is decided in advance, eventually it's about what choice you make and what person you become. And it's a good message. And they already showed it.
So deleting this line and being afraid of stating it outloud but doing it on the background is cowardness. And for sure it influences Angel's image first, they knew it and they were saying it even. That's why I am so irritated by the fact that since angel was still present in the other show they were using and influencing the main storyline as well. Even when it was not directly about him, other characters had their own plots and he had his. But in case with him he can even have a child, developing feelings for other women and do many other things and it's all ok. Somehow it doesn't influence the btvs narrative at all and when he comes back for 5 minutes things are the same as it was when he left. But SHE and btvs plot should be doing everything keeping him in mind. How it will influence him if they do and say this and that. And this way we as the audience are never free from him either. Let him go already. Let us and Buffy be free finally.
