After finishing AHNY, and my DABB and Shakarian Mini-Bang fics, I started working on what I thought (at the time) would be a fun Immortal x Historian AU set in modern Thedas. This has somehow turned into a chess fic? Idek right now.

In brief: Rook is a historian studying the Grey Wardens at Arlathan U, Solas is the immortal (obviously), they meet-cute in a coffee shop and Rook's memory of her past life with him is slowly awakened through her research. Throw in a chess game and a little mystery, et voila.

“Did you order for me?” “Good day, Rook. It is customary to greet one another before a conversation. Have you neglected etiquette training during your studies?” His eyebrow continues to get more arched the lower her jaw drops at the sheer audacity of the comment. When she finally shakes herself out of the shell-shock, she tosses everything she’d brought with her into the corner booth seat across from him and sits. If he’s going to be an ass, it seems only fair to torture him for the entire meal. And though she does suspect that he is the one who ordered for her, it gets him no points whatsoever toward this little game of verbal sparring they seem to have fallen into – Merrill knows her order well enough by now, and Rook rarely changes it. “Is this what we’re doing now, then? Trading barbs to see who is the best at making conversation?” Solas settles back into his seat and takes a long look at her, as inscrutable as he was the first time they met. “Perhaps there is another topic you would prefer?” “Yes, actually.” Rook only needs a moment to decide, because there is something that’s been bothering her for days, so as she slams her notebook down (the one with all the strange notes), she asks, in an exasperated tone, “How does someone hate weather? It’s such an all encompassing phrase. ‘I hate weather.’ There’s always weather! It’s not like you can turn it off.” She throws herself against the back of the booth with a now-frustrated but muted scream clenched between her teeth. “And what the fuck is a nug?”
