As the seconds and minutes and hours dripped by, Quentin did his best to keep his eyes from the clock. Pretending he didn’t even notice as Monday rolled into Tuesday rolled into—

Wednesday morning. Quentin’s stomach tight as a plummeting stone. Willing himself to keep his breakfast down as he packed his duffel full of sweaters and jeans and socks for the long weekend stretching out like infinity before him. Mechanical movements of his arms and his legs; the snick of a zipper; the thud of his bag as he discarded it down on the floor. Slogging down the hallway to Eliot’s room when he was finished. Taking a breath and pushing inside and choking back an audible grumble when he saw that they weren’t alone.

Julia was sitting cross-legged on Eliot’s freshly made bed, dark hair tumbling in easy spirals down around her shoulders. She was watching Margo intensely—across the room next to Eliot, drawling something under her breath as he slipped vests from their hangers inside his cavernous closet—but turned her eyes to Quentin the moment he stepped inside and shut the door.

“Um—” Quentin raked his fingers through his hair and pinched his brows together. “Hi?”

“Hey.” Julia’s mouth shaped itself into a tight pink bow. “Pack your shit already?”
