One thing I've always thought about with Mary's first letter is how she wrote that Arthur knows it's from her because of her bad handwriting. It just always stuck with me because it makes you think that they must have sent letters so often over the years that they eventually memorised eachother's handwriting.
That maybe when they were younger, Arthur, in his early twenties, giddy and full of nerves as he rode to the post office to deliver his letter for the woman he loved? Cursing to himself as he fretted about what he'd written, worried about sounding like a fool?
Then Mary, at the same time, full of butterflies as she slipped out every day to check for a new letter from Arthur, and then writing her own letters before scrunching them up and rewriting them again and again, cursing to herself because of her bad handwriting? Wanting to make it as nice as Arthur's?
Do you think about how something as simple as sending letters was probably the steadiest thing keeping them together in their own chaotic lives, how it probably made them both feel so much less lonely through everything? Do you think about it. Do you. Do.

Every time someone in this fandom romanticizes Abigail's prostitution, an angel looses its wings.
I canβt believe this still needs to be said, but letβs clear something up: Abigail Roberts was not βsavedβ by the Van der Linde gang out of the goodness of their hearts. She was a 17-year-old working girl. Yes, a prostituteβbrought into the gang by Uncle because of her profession, not because they wanted to βhelp an orphan girl.β Pretending otherwise is not just wrong, itβs an insult to her character and completely misrepresents the darker themes of the game.
βThey wouldnβt take advantage of a 17-year-old girl!β Really? These are men who rob, kill, and lie without hesitation. They absolutely would and did take advantage of her. Dutch was not some saintly father figure; he was an opportunist who saw value in people only as long as they served his needs. The gang didnβt βrescueβ Abigail, they exploited her vulnerabilities and used her just like they used everyone else.
Even within the game, thereβs a camp interaction where Susan Grimshaw tells Abigail she should return to prostitution to bring in more money for the gang. If that doesnβt make it clear how the gang viewed her role, I donβt know what will.
Abigailβs story isnβt some fairy tale about a group of noble outlaws saving an orphan. Itβs about survival in a brutal, unforgiving world. She didnβt have a choice in staying with the gang. This idea that the gang was Robin Hood-like and only βstole from the rich to give to the poorβ doesnβt erase the fact that they were still criminals who exploited people whenever they could, including Abigail.
The game wants you to sit with the uncomfortable truths of these characters. It shows you the dark realities of their actions and the systemic issues of the time. Romanticizing Abigailβs situation or painting the gang as her saviors completely undermines that. Itβs not just naΓ―ve...itβs flat-out wrong.
This kind of take isnβt just ignorant; itβs borderline insulting to anyone whoβs been in a similar situation. Abigailβs story is powerful because itβs not pretty. She was used, exploited, and forced to live a life she didnβt chooseβbut she fought tooth and nail to survive and make a better life for Jack. Thatβs what makes her compelling, not some sugar-coated fantasy about her being βrescued.β
Take off the rose-colored glasses and actually think critically about what the game is showing you. Abigailβs resilience is what makes her an incredible characterβnot some fake narrative about Dutch and the gang being her saviors. They werenβt.
Itβs fine to love the characters, but stop twisting their stories to fit some idealized version of the gang. Theyβre criminals. Abigail was exploited by them. Thatβs the truth, and nothing about it is going to be pretty.
I love a character raised to be a weapon as much as the next guy. But what really gets me is a character raised to be a shield. Who canβt fathom being neededβor even being wantedβ beyond keeping others safe. Who believe they are alive only to insure someone doesnβt die. no matter the cost. Characters who self-sacrifice not because they think they deserve it, but because no one else does deserve it, and itβs their job to protect.
Characters whoβve been told thatβs why your important. Your worth something because this other person/ thing is important, and you are here solely to keep them safe.
Bonus points if itβs not a legitimate job theyβve been given. Maybe at one point it was, but now that they are free from it, they havenβt given up that mentality. No one is forcing or asking them to do this, but they need to. They need to in order to be deserving.

Hot take and not to be a killjoy or the shipping police but people treating Viktor or Jinx's aroace headcanons as if they were canon is not the revolutionary take people think it is.
Headcanons are always all right but we have to acknowledge that they are somehow damaging when they apply to stereotypes. It might not be the case for everyone but most of the time people unconsciously assume that disability/mental illness=asexuality. These headcanons erase the freedom of attraction from people who are already seen as unable to have sexual/romantic experiences/desires, when it's completely untrue and harmful.
You can headcanon Viktor and Jinx as aroace, but I have seen people changing their minds once Viktor is no longer disabled (s2 with all of his other forms) and Jinx is no longer as mentally ill (alternate universe Powder). And it speaks wonders of how people see these characters.
"I never thought about Jinx being able to feel romantic/sexual attraction until s2!" To believe she's actually only capable of that when she's not "damaged" is incredibly disturbing. Especially since Jinx has always had a bit of a flirty personality too.
"I've always seen Viktor as asexual, I don't know why!" That's fine. You can headcanon him as ace. But I believe there is a reason behind it, most of the time, if for some inexplicable reason the "vibes" of the disabled character are making you think he's ace.
I say all of this being aroaspec myself, by the way. Headcanon all you want but going to people's posts commenting how "it's weird for you that they have romantic/sexual plots when they're clearly aroace" is not a win at all. It's a headcanon, after all, and it should be treated as such, and that's fine. But it also is damaging to spread stereotypes like these.
Of course the disabled character is asexual. Of course the mentally ill character is aromantic. It's not as revolutionary as you might think, tbh.
Fandom is not activism and it's all right to have any headcanons you want BUT some of them are filled with damaging stuff and perhaps we should look into ourselves more before treating these assumptions as something canon.

A ds9 episode where every shot pays way too much attention to random set pieces in a manner that heavily implies it may be Odo while the action happens in the background. Odo does not appear or feature in the plot of the episode at all.
Just started reading Sherlock Holmes and all the adaptations are wrong. This man is a delight. He gets excited about hemoglobin and is ecstatic at the thought of Watson as a roommate. He purposefully forgets how the solar system works so he has more room in his brain for crime. He shows Watson the dirt stains on his trousers and he can tell what part of London they come from based on color and consistency. (As far as i can tell Watson didn't ask, Sherlock just gets back from walks and tells Watson about the stains unprompted.) The text specifically says "Holmes was certainly not a difficult man to live with." Why does every adaptation make him unpleasant and rude, he's literally just eccentric. He's such a goober, I love him.
