Aoi was born in a small village on the outskirts of the Rukongai’s Northern 64th district, to parents she knew nothing about. Unable to care for her and in hopes of a better life, she’d been abandoned by them in one of its more populated areas 5 years after birth. She was raised throughout the rest of her infancy and early childhood by an elderly couple, until sickness had fallen upon her adoptive mother. As they could not afford the necessary medications without sacrifice, Aoi began to feel like a burden. She ran away, unsure if she would ever return.

Due to her rash decision however, her youth proved challenging and she was in constant survival mode. She found refuge with others after a few years of wandering on her own. Never having much interaction with anyone beyond her family, she was distrusting of them and kept her distance. It took some time but their kindness came through, and she’d learn to consider them as friends. Wanting to repay the warmth and hospitality that was given, and after growing tired of scrounging for so long, she sought out work once capable. A local shopkeeper who, reluctant at first to hire a child, took her in. Things were starting to look up. Aoi had a another shot at life, but it came at the expense of little pay and often being subjected to degradation. She’d manage; after all, the smiles from those back home reassured her it was worth it.

Some nights she’d sneak out to a forest a distance from town, in search for anything she could manage to bring back. Not long after, some residents began to speak of sightings of a mysterious creature lurking within; and after mistaking the mixed cries of animals, and her echoing screams, thought it could possibly be a hollow. Fear lingered for several weeks, but once its true identity came to light, it quickly dwindled. She’d continue her nightly escapades after finding joy and comfort in nature itself. She was known as the “wild child”, a name she wore proudly. It went on to become her last name, using it when she eventually applied to the Shinō Academy. Upon graduating, she was recruited into Squad 3, under then Captain Gin Ichimaru. She befriends Izuru Kira during her time there and worked her way to becoming the squad’s 3rd seat. Sometime before Aizen’s betrayal, she transfers over to Squad 6, keeping her previous position. Now being able to fully support those who helped her in the past, she visits them occasionally. She finally makes amends with her adoptive parents, in time learns of her biological parents, and their fate. She hopes to make them proud as a Soul Reaper.
