Seeing as Micheal is a literal genius manipulator (and little psycho as i like to headcanon) i think he couldve reached his goal without needing honor to care about him, and we could easily twist this quote "i just needed to get you to care about me" into something deeper and a little more complex.

Did Micheal really need Honor to care about him to begin with when he couldve just avoided her all together? And it wouldnt have been hard either. Did he need to act like he was head over heels for Honor at all? If he really knew what she wanted from the start he couldve immediately avoided her no problem.

Other than the fact that i think he had genuine feelings for her before she ALMOST drugged him i think micheal really wanted her to look his way and maybe the fact that a pretty smart girl like honor interacting with him made him a little giddy and excited. He mightve wantd her to genuinely care about him, maybe even so she would stop trying to make him fail at every chance she gets. So maybe she would actually like him instead of pertending she does.
