A Character Analysis: Big The Cat
I was debating on making this post due to Gamescoop!’s recent video and comment from said video, but I decided to go ahead and write this up anyways.Â
Big The Cat is one of the most hated characters in the franchise and is even the source of a lot of Sonic memes nowadays. Yes, his gameplay in Sonic Adventure does not fit the series, and his gameplay is confusing and tedious if you just jump right into it, and his voice can get annoying, but do any of these things make Big a bad character?
I do not think so. In my opinion Big’s character is harmless. He appears to be a naive laid back cat who lives all alone deep in the Mystic Ruins with his best pal Froggy.Â
By watching the cutscenes in Sonic Adventure, players can assume that Big has never been anywhere, and does not know anyone. No one in the game ever addresses Big by name and none of the other characters know who he is. He is the outsider in this whole game who got caught up in the stories events.
When I was playing Big’s story, this cutscene stood out to me.
I mentioned this cutscene before in my Sonic Adventure post, but I want to go a little bit more in depth because this scene actually made me feel bad for Big, and it shows he does have a character.
This cutscene alone shows that Big has no friends. Froggy is his only companion. That is why in the story, Big works so hard trying to get his pal back. He knows if something were to happen to them both, especially him no one would come and save them.Â
I think if Big’s gameplay was more clear when you start his story, or if his gameplay did not exist and he was just apart of other characters narratives, or maybe his gameplay was even something different he would not be such a hated character. People may look back and shrug in indifference. Maybe they might even laugh because Big really had no reason to be in this game. He was more of an outside character who managed to become involved in the events when his friend got kidnapped. The idea is quite comical and a bit genius.Â
I can not say much about Big in Sonic Heroes because I have not completed Team Rose’s or any of the other characters story in the game. I also do not know much about the franchise outside of the games or cartoons so I am not qualified to talk about that either.Â
I just find it a bit sad that Big is still hated on to this day. I understand the reasons why, and I completely get them, but I do not think Big truly deserves it. To me he does have potential as a character in this series. It is just the way it is written. Personally, I think it would be hilarious if Big were to show up again with a small story role, kind of like his Adventure story where he gets wrapped up in events. Â
This is just my silly little opinion that I wanted to get out there. I know it is not a popular one, but I felt like sharing it anyways. I am sort of indifferent towards Big, but his character does interest me, and that is why I wanted to write this post.Â
