User Test

Why we decided to do this project? We are doing this project to highlight the concerns and severity of what this virus can do and how quickly it can be spread. We also wanted to communicate to the viewers using specifically an artefact because it is proven that visual communication is much more effective than verbal communication and is generally processed 60,000 times faster according to Rebecca Vogels (Web development and Bug trafficking) from UserSnap . Also considering that the displayed data will be live, we hope to be able to push forward and spread more awareness. As of October 20th, 2020 11:47 am CEST, there have been over 1,114,692 Covid19-related deaths which shows how effective each move we make is. By understanding the project in itself, we are presenting something that people can absorb information from and can interact with, without actually interacting with it.   Who is our target market? Our target audience is essentially everybody. This is merely because Covid19 has affected the entire world and much economical global damage has taken place throughout the majority of the year, but the general artefact is mainly targeted to people who will attend the BCT showcase night and get to see the project in person. who will benefit? In the broader spectrum, regions of the world with higher covid cases (India, USA, Brazil, France, UK etc.) and a higher probability of spreading the virus would most likely benefit from an installation such as this. Ideally, it would be helpful for anybody who has an occupation outside of their home, and goes out a lot of the time. It would be informative and hopefully viewers will take something away from it and become a bit more vigilant when out of the house (social distancing, hygiene, wearing masks etc.)   Final outcome We learnt about the pandemic on a more connected level, where we can depict what is essentially live and accurate statistics from around the world. We have learnt to incorporate different skills and information to make an ‘interactive’ project that would ideally help people become more aware and understanding of world current affairs.

Future direction

These were the questions we asked people:

Are you a visual or auditory learner?

Would you know which countries are the most affected by the Coronavirus?

Do you know how fast a Conornavirus cluster can grow?

Do you wear a mask in public?

what scares you most about Covid-19?

Are you more interested in Observing light displays or physical displays?

After questionnaire out we found just over two thirds of people were visual learners which backed up prior research to say 65% of people are visual learners.

We found that most people knew that the United States of America had the highest amount of cases although thats about all the knowledge the knew.

Most people were uneducated about how quickly Coronavirus can travel and spread especially in highly populated areas. This is why we are focusing on showing the clusters through our projection mapping.

We also found most people did not bother with wearing a mask and upon further questioning said they would wear one if it was fashionable and easily accessible as in their bag or pocket.

For my project it was based on ‘Diving deeper into the effects of social media’

Randomly enough this was inspiried after seeing a few posts and pictures on facebook about marriages and how marriages last today compared to post war times. Obviously it is hard to find statistics as we are currently the statistics. Its just common to hear about parents being divorced and I found a few posts blaming it on our social media and technological age where all our sexual and emotional needs are accessible on a screen. My project is not specifically on the relation of marriages and technology but I instead took a much broader approach with looking into the effect social media has on our people today. 

Social media was essentially started in 2004 by facebook which was followed by twitter in 2006,, instagram in 2010, snapchat 2011 and tiktok in 2016. These are only the main social media platforms.

These platforms have evolved from nothing and now have control over the lifestyles of many people including 2.7 billion users on facebook, 1 billion on instagram and 238 million on snapchat all of this data is on a monthly basis.

Social media has evolved from an instrumental idea to a complex instrical market and lifestyle to the next younger generation who are born into screen socialisation. It has also become a culture to have a part of this lifestyle letting it control their thought and look process

Social media is used in a lot of ways both positive and negatively. We see people using social media instrumentally by extremists, hackers and identity thefts. Examples of this was the live streaming of the christchurch shooting and the 10.7 million identity fraud victims in 2016 alone. Although social media has huge advantages such as communication, dating and education all this can be achieved in other ways but social media is becoming more efficient and accessible to its users making it the natural way to communicate.

Social media is intrinsically used in online businesses who rely on marketing and awareness through social media platforms.Also with 3.6 billion users this year our children are being brought up in a social media focused age. In today's younger generation our youth are becoming dependent on subscribers, likes and followers. Some people also use social media intrinsically for dating through apps like tinder. You can meet your soulmate through a screen a million miles away. It is fair to say that some people rely on social media a lot more than others but some are reliant on it due to the isolation or other restrictive circumstances.

Social media has been the lifeline to many people who are stuck in isolation. It has also been the next big step in instant communication worldwide. We see users a lot more educated and connected to their families than in any other time. We also see a new way to work from home where users can connect, educate and contribute to any group. Social media is the biggest source of information whether it be positive and constructive to society or not.

The main issue of social media is the whole pornography side where advertisers try to reach out ot the vulnerable who use social media instinsically.. We see nearly half of kids between the ages of 9-16 regularly exposed to nudity and sexual images. We also see kids talking to friends through game chats instead of playing outside. Most kids know how to use a computer before even learning how to play sports.

There are a few countries where politics/ dictatorship has banned the use of social media trying to stop the exposure to content which is not beneficial to the state. Countries include China, North Korea and Iran. It is hard to say wheither or not it is beneficial but compared to any other country, China has one of the lowest suicide rates at 9.7 per 100,000 per capita in the world. It is debatable to say that the reason is the banned social presence which isn't causing depression or anxiety in their population. 

Social media incorporates many different types or technologies into one such as the use of AI in personalised marketing. Bringing a more focused source of marketing to social media users. Personalised Advertising monitors your clicks and browsing to bring you ads you might be interested in. Who knows how this isn't a breach of privacy..

1. Discuss the cultural context of something in your blog

In my blogs I had a photo of a wooden table. This wasn't technically part of the Tautai gallery but it had amazing carved patterns in which was a piece of art in my eyes. I found it awesome to look at and run your hands across the grooves. I almost see it as the culture is engraved into the table saying that we live off the past generations that had such a creative way of living to survive and made the foundations or table that we live off today. 

2. What are intrinsic vs instrumental notions of technology? Use an example from your blog.

Intrinsic versus instrumental to me means essential day to day technology vrs technology we just use for tools. Although I find most things can be debated whether or not it is instrumental or intrinsic such as the internet. Some could say that that's essential to living and surviving but others would say it's just a tool that not everyone needs to be alive. For me I would say it is a lot harder to find intrinsic technology but a life support machine would be one. Most other technology is just a tool and isn't essential to our survival but is just a tool to do jobs efficiently. In today's age time is incredibly valuable so technology's main focus is how can we speed up a job or task.

 It's also debatable on an ethical point of view from the piece of art I talked about in one of my blogs with the land mines. It could be essential to some as it protects their homes from invading countries but others use it as a tool to minimise the risk of contact. Some people may call landmines a tool of war but others the key to survival.

 3. In regards to your engagement in your course of study, what sort of technologies are you interested in developing? (at least one example if you have multiple)

I have recently been looking into AI and how to create a perfect AI system. Although I don't have near the skills to attempt anything in AI I find the whole concept of trying to get a computer to act ethical and pick up on emotions and traits that aren't identified by race or colour which is typical for a computer to go off. Its extremely hard to teach AI to be ethical and teach it to worry about non-visual factors like feelings or insecurities an individual might have.

4. What systems does your tech example rely on or engage with?

In an AI it involves deep learning for example telling an AI what the replies could be and what the right answer should be. It also involves learning from mistakes and negative feedback.

5. What ethical ‘issues’ might be relevant to your example?

1. What areas in your field of interest or usage in regards to technology, that you can identify potential current or future ethical or design bias issues? (identify at least one) 

I have recently been looking into AI and how to create a perfect AI system. Although I don't have near the skills to attempt anything in AI I found the concept of creating an ethical AI extremely challenging. With AI I believe there are many Ethical issues that include:

AI brings a biger separation to the rich and the poor. In other words AI is bringing in inequality

AI is not totally beneficial in today's world

AI is stealing jobs in a world where we are beginning to become over populated

2. What are those issues specifically? 

I believe the biggest issue of the above issues is the inequality the AI brings. To break it down and simplify it AI is stealing our jobs and separating the rich from the poor. Last year it was predicted that in 2020 1.8 million jobs will be lost to AI ranging from desk jobs to construction (1). With production lines and consultation turning to automation it leaves our age left with cars being fully produced in 24.7 hours (2) and chat bots that let us log into our life savings in the bank. By having this the simple person who installs the wheels on a car has been replaced by AI which installs the right wheel with 0% chance of error. As well as that we have AI call centres that are expected to grow from $800 million last year to $2.9 billion in the next few years (3). Jobs are being lost at the bottom of the equality see-saw but at the top, companies are finding cheap ways to have no human error by replacing humans with AI.

1.Body: Name an IoT product you might design, its purpose, what its connection to IoT represents 

A system that diagnoses a patient that has injured themself in a remote area waiting for help to arrive. People could buy a system that sets up and does basic scans so that effective help can be made straight away. This could also be used to save resources if emergency units are not needed urgently.

2. Smart Home: Name an IoT product you might design, its purpose, what its connection to IoT represents 

A piece of technology that is installed on the side of roads to direct traffic down alternate routes if there is a massive traffic jam or accident. This piece of technology could pair up with google maps and would reduce hotspots that suffer from bad rush hour traffic. 

3. Smart City:Name an example of IoT used in the public realm, its purpose and what its connection to IoT represents

After visiting the Auckland art gallery last week I was excited to visit the pacifica gallery. With me being half tongan it was exciting to see some more pacifica culture as I haven't seen any before!

I found this image to be a classic background of pacifica, having key parts that make you culturally pasific.

2. What technologies are apparent in the image?

None apart from the colours and icons that perfectly represent what its like to be pasific

3. What creative practices can you name in the context of this image?

I found the colours were perfectly matched to what it is like to live in the islands. The colours represent green and ocean-like feels.

1. What is the cultural context of what you see in the image?

I took this image a lot differently to others by understanding it as all the other cultures different from another perspective but the same through the roots when you line up the lights to a perfectly aligned state.

The layout of this installation and how the lights perfectly line up with each other, as well as the colours they chose which represent an island like feel.

Today we visited Auckland art gallery to experience their civilisation exhibition and I thoroughly loved it. I could have spent a whole day taking in what each photo had to say. We were only meant to take 3 photos but I took over 50! Anyway heres my top 3 that I lived the most.

With this photo it is focusing on a small part of a major skyscraper. By zooming in we see each small window as that represents a family or cluster of people who contribute to the city.

In this image it shows humans almost as clones in a hectic world. 

2. What technologies are apparent in the image?

Assuming this is all work for the construction model, it shows how humans are almost the technology that are the internal part of a business in todays age.

3. What creative practices can you name in the context of this image?

Everyone is dressed the same showing how it is hard to be different and stand out in a job where you do the same as the person next to you. It also shows how hectic and crazy it is where it is no longer straight forward.
