So, I decided to try 3 different things at Universal Orlando today. A food, a treat and a drink.
For the food, I got the Shepard's Fries from Minneigans (food booth across from Transformers and Mel's).
Coming in at $8.99 ($9.57 w/ tax), you're granted with these;
The fries were generously covered in this fun slurry of.. stuff. Ground beef, peas, fried onions, chives and a cheesy sauce. It all came together quite nicely, though I will say the salt from the fries and the salt from the cheese sauce can be a bit overwhelming near the end. My mouth definitely wasn't totally thrilled, so have a drink on hand for sure.
The dish came out nice and hot (hot enough to kind of burn my hands, oops), but after eating for just a few minutes while I was looking for somewhere to sit, the fries had the unfortunate fate of starting to get soggy under the toppings. It wasn't the worst thing, and it was bound to happen, but if you dislike soggy fries try to eat this one quickly.
Overall, for the price and taste, I'd say I got my money's worth. It's definitely a dish for one person, but filling enough to avoid having to pay for a full meal. I personally got a little sick of it near the end, with the salt and the cheese and the sog, but I'm still satisfied. I think if I'd gotten a chance to eat it faster, it would get a higher score.
All in all, I give the Shepard's Fries a 7.5/10 and I'd recommend giving it a shot at least once!
Moving onto the treat, we go over to Islands of Adventure for Cafe 4 in the Superhero Island section of the park. Personally, I've never been too big on this restaurant, but they recently got a new item I can't resist; The S'mores Cookie.
This cookie comes in at $6.29 ($6.70 tax), and in about 5 minutes, you're given this;
Dense. Chewy. Dry. Flavorless.
All words that came to mind while eating this mess. I don't know if these Universal influencers are being paid off or what, but this thing is not worth the hype whatsoever.
The outside is vaguely crunchy. The inside attempts to be chewy, but falls flat on its face and has a closer semblance to undercooked. There's also no flavor to the cookie, instead having it solely rely on the outside toppings to carry it along. Unfortunately, instead of carrying the cookie, all the toppings dropped it on the ground and ran away. The graham crackers make everything feel dry, the chocolate chips may as well be decorative and the marshmallows are.. there.
All in all, one of the biggest disappointments I've ever had to put in my mouth. I didn't even finish it, that's how terrible it was. If you like something thats dense, dry, undercooked and crunchy all at once, this may be for you? It's absolutely not for me. 0/10.
Finally, we reach the drink. Fair warning, this is non alcoholic! I got myself the Mango Passion Slush from Creepy Concoctions (right beside Transformers and Minions Cafe). The drink was $7.00 ($7.46) with tax, and we are blessed with this lovely little guy;
Refreshing is what comes to mind with this drink. Since it's smack in the middle of July, it's gonna be hot, but this is a great way to beat the heat. It's not too sweet or overwhelming with the flavor, unlike something like an ICEE in comparison. The mango is definitely the star, with the passion fruit notes coming in as more of an aftertaste to compliment that forward mango taste.
These do come mixed with alcohol for $17, if that's your thing, but even without the mix in, it's a very solid drink. Just be sure to finish it before you go on any rides! 9/10, simply because one sip tends to give me a bit of a brain freeze.
I'd say today was a successful day overall when it comes to food!
