Hanako is an incredibly private person, he does not share his name, interests, intentions, and, of course, feelings. ( This is shown by his not telling Nene about his brother, having to nag him for his favorite food, seeing how much he likes space in a memory by mistake, literally having a whole arc about finding out his name )
This explains his way of socializing, as he is unwilling to share his true thoughts and feelings, what comes out is the comical persona which is always in control of any situation. He also has an extreme self hatred which causes him to idolize βsalivationβ. These two aspects cause him to be a super massive coward about his feelings, not only does sharing them make him feel out of control, itβs also, in his eyes, an obviously selfish and unnecessary thing to do. He strives for salvation, to be absolved of his wrongdoings, so in his perfect world he has done his worth of positive acts and disappeared. ( This is shown a lot in his approach to problem solving which almost always has him separated permanently from the people or person he cares about, EX. Picture perfect, No.6 )
Why bother someone else? Heβs not worth it and never will be.
Nene is someone with a lot of emotions, and a lot of need to express them. She seeks out sources to anchor her and her extreme emotions. ( Such as her need for someone to like her, which she anchored to Teru, or Aoi whom she discusses her feelings with. )
Having something or someone to process her emotions with is really important for her, and having it gives her more confidence to take risks and live her life bravely.
Nene, essentially, values safety, and not just mentally, physically she cares a lot about her own safety and the safety of her loved ones. She gets very distressed when the security of her loved ones is at risk, and will seek them out to become their βanchorβ. ( Herself and Aoi in the Misaki Stairs, Hanako during searching, Mitsuba in hell of mirrors, Hanako during picture perfect, Hanako and Aoi during No.6, Hanako in current arc with No.1 )
Hanako is Neneβs anchor, both physically and emotionally. Even in the first chapter, the mermaid scale anchored them together quite indisputably, and so Nene was promised not only a seemingly unbreakable bond, but also to share emotions and experiences with someone.
Hanako became unique in being her guide in the supernatural world, allowing her to feel more secure in enjoying the new world she had never experienced before, he was always there to protect her and for her to talk to. He helped stabilize her with his more rational and sometime well informed approach to a situation, making her feel safer.
For him, she forced him to face his own emotions, he couldnβt be as fake with her because she was so emotionally open to him. Nene pushed him to respond to her earnestly as she told him things he couldnβt bullshit his way out of.
Her openness also helped him see how she could like him, even as she knew more and more about him, she was honest about how she felt about him, his actions, everything. And in a way that is he kind of forgiveness he wants. If she knows everything about him already, and still forgives him, then heβs got more hope than he thought he did. And that emotional growth is good for him.
Aside from all that though, theyβre just both really funny and are even funnier together. Theyβre constantly messing with each other, sharing looks, judging each other, judging others together, playfully insulting each other. She doesnβt mind how touchy he is, and he listens to all her delusions and thoughts. They support each other in their interests and think of each other first. Even if they didnβt like each other they would still make a really solid duo because they would still make sense and they would be / are best friends regardless.
Anyway this is my first time making something like this so I hope itβs okay. Itβs not very detailed, sorry! But I will definitely expand upon it soon cause I have SO many thoughts about these two this is just the surface :)

nene yashiro will always be my favorite manga/anime protagonist because literally no one is doing it like her. she's such a wonderful character. i always love the ones that take a really common stereotype for women or girls and flip it to make it much better and more interesting and nene is one of my favorite examples.. i love that she's so focused on romance but it feels more like a character trait than sexism because she's just so earnest about it. those kinds of emotions are completely congruent with the rest of her character and so it adds to her instead of detracting from her.
but also, she just loves herself so sincerely. she's so well adjusted that the story's conflict comes from her being too normal rather than too weird. she's insecure especially near the beginning but she never seems to be ashamed of the person that she is -- she feels remorse when her actions lead to something bad but she's not riddled with guilt over it; she dislikes her legs and her bust size but she focuses less on it as the series progresses. she develops as a character but her personality barely changes because 1) she's resilient and 2) she loves herself, in every sense of the word. she values who she is now rather than wanting badly to change.
maybe she's not super popular with boys but she has friends and people she's familiar with, she's kind, and friendly: she's just some girl, and the story works so well because she's so normal. she's scared of bugs, she's not very good at school (at least enough that she had to worry about remedial classes), she does foolish things, she's reckless and impulsive. she's only fifteen, and she's not used to this world, so what more would you expect from her? but she manages to survive through everything, she continues trying knowing she's going to die, she believes that everything will be okay as it is because she is stronger than she ever thought she could be. it's less that she changes as a person and more that she recognizes parts of her that she couldn't see before. i love you nene yashiro
Platonic Akanene is so silly omg. Underrated duo istg. Theyβre besties your honor. Plus canonly theyβve know each other for like four years and are like in the same friend group cause Aoi.

I always new Natsuhiko would be one of those guys who buys the cheep temu rings and then wears a bunch of them to school to be all mysterious and cool lmao
Aoi really went "I will sacrifice myself for you! Go!" cause look at those tears, she knows this is a sacrifice but she is determined!!
And Akane said "No, I will." in what I bet is a calming tone, cause he is, as always, at his gentlest with Aoi.
But Aoi refuses!! She physically keeps him down, holding on tight to his shirt.
Is important that Aois doesn't follow Akane's lead but she also doesn't try to go back to her first decision, there is no "I told you to run Akane! Get out of here!" because she respects Akane's desire to protect her, she appreciates it even, deep down.
She just refuses to leave him alone here.
And Akane actually went through enough growth to respect her decision back.
"I can see you have your heart set on it. So let's both die here."
She is someone to protect but she is her own person with the right to make her own decisions, and unlike old timeline Aoi, she shows her emotions. She puts her foot down.
Considering Akane blushes underneath all his scratches after seeing her resolve, I feel like a part of him appreciates that she feels the same protectiveness for him.
They are on the same wavelength. Acknowledging each other's resolve to fight and respecting it. I love it.

In TBHK there are really two main emerging views on supernaturals from the side of the living which are
A. Teru and Akane ( sort of )
Which is pretty much the side of unwavering intolerance toward supernaturals and commonly they speak of them in the same way people speak of bugs like flies.
B. Nene and Kou ( also sort of )
They tend to treat supernaturals more as other people who make mistakes but ultimately deserve to coexist with them, however, they do also treat them like animals in the sense of attributing certain behaviors to them and allowing them to be forgiven because they ARE technically not quite humans, or just obviously are not, like the mokke.
If you were a character in the story, where do you think your opinion would fall on how supernaturals should be treated?
Like Teru and Akane
Like Nene and Kou
Like neither / other

Personally I feel like as an outside perspective I agree with Nene and Kou more, but if I were living in the story I would probably side with Teru and Akane
